This worked super well for me. GRX 11s shifters. Garbaruk 10-50 11s XD. Eagle XX1 12s chain. Shimano GRX 822 SGS 12s derailleur. Absolute Black 42t chainring. Shifts super well. Better than my Eagle MTB Garbaruk setups. Love this combination on my gravel bike. Caveat: check your B limit. I found that matching the line on the derailleur (meant for a 51t) to the 50t Garbaruk was spot on. The other thing. Use the Shimano recommended chain length (4-5 links+ quick link on big to big). I cut mine too short (2 links, vs the 4) and it skipped on the 10t cog while riding. With the right length it shifts better and no skipping.

It had to be wound in a bit but only what seemed normal for setting up a derailleur. My results aren’t as good as yours. My shifters are a bit old and beat though. There seems to be a compromise between the derailleur shifting into the low gear easily but not shifting up to the last 3 high gears easily or not getting into the 51T at all and having good high end shifting. It’s probably a bit better than the performance with the tanpan and RD-M6100.

@MrKipperfish10 ай бұрын
@@TheBikeSauce The difference is clearly explained on the product page for every single wolftooth chainring that comes in a ST version. It's all about the extended inner plates, look at the diagram. The effective inner width is NOT the same as 11 speed when it comes to 1x. In the case of WolfTooth, running a 12 speed HG+ chain on a 1x ring made for 11 speed shimano chains will be louder and will wear the ring (and likely the chain, though chains are much harder than rings) faster due to the interference of the extended 12 speed HG+ plates with the wider wide teeth on the 11 speed ring. There's really no reason to run an HG+ chain in the setup detailed in the video. The only consideration would be for pulley wheel fit on the chain, but I doubt that will have an appreciable effect on shifting performance. Shimano has always had a rather loose fit of pulley teeth on the chain in the laterial dimension, and doesn't do narrow/wide pulleys. So as long as those 12 speed pulleys have teeth which are the same or very close width to 11 speed pulleys, shifting should be pretty much the same.

@@TheBikeSauce Oh yeah, seems like Shimano indeed changed the internal shape with their new 12-speed HG+ chain a bit from their 11-speed counterpart even though the internal width is the same, interesting! I only use up to 11-speed on all my bikes, up until here everything plays nicely together ;)

Hey Nolan, thanks for vid! Speaking as someone who hasn’t had their coffee yet, it seems like there isn’t any reason this also wouldn’t work with a 2x setup. What do you think about the possibility of pairing this hack with a wide/low double for even better climbing capability?

Morning! You mean a 2x paired to an 11-51t cassette? Perhaps in theory, but I’m not sure there’s any rd with that total capacity
@vongdong1010 ай бұрын
It won't work. I tried doing this with a sram rival axs setup with a 10-52 cassette and 43/30 crankset. There is too much of a chain slack in the large ring and small cog. Like there was no tension at all.

I was wondering the same thing. I have 2x GRX that I would like to make wider range in the rear cassette. Currently I have a 31x47 chainrings and 11-36 cassette with RD hanger extender. Shifting is workable but not great. Would this GRX RD hack with long cage work if I converted by 2X to 1X chain set not by changing the cranks but simply by using only one chain ring? Thanks for the great videos.
@TheBikeSauce10 ай бұрын
@@mattkavanaugh5623 I wouldn't run just one of the original 2x chainrings. Rather, you can get a Wolftooth dropstop 1x narrow wide chainring for the GRX cranks.

There is only one series of 10+ speed rear mechs I can think of that can reach close to that capacity: the Microshift XLE. E.g. the RD-M665L model, with 47T capacity and max 46T big cog. A sub-compact 2x crankset, e.g. 46/30, would only really work perfectly with 11-42T without getting in trouble. As I don't own one, I don't know if you can go bigger than that as you can with most Shimano derailleurs, but maybe someone out there has tried it out?

Hey @thebikesaurce, i tried this on the weekend without success. On a 2022 Giant Revolt with an existing 1xGRX 11sp setup. I used the CS-M5100 11-51 11sp cassette, GRX RX 822-SGS and a new 11sp chain. Unfortunately, for some reason, the 39t sprocket skipped, clunked and carried on. No amount of indexing or B-screw adjustment (noting new position) worked for me. Every other gear was flawless though. I also tried a different wheelset, new quick link, new cable, hanger alignment, however it made no difference in that 39t sprocket. I also tried a 12sp chain however it wouldn't interface with my 11sp GRX chainring. What would you suggest i try next? 12sp GRX chainring and 12sp chain perhaps?
@TheBikeSauce9 ай бұрын
39t cog - as in the 3rd largest cog on the cassette? That is very strange if all others worked fine. Sounds like the only variable you haven’t considered is the cassette. Could you try a different wide range cassette?
@danielpeters27089 ай бұрын
@@TheBikeSauce Yeah, the 3rd largest cog. I dont have another wide range cassette to test with. I did think that the chain could be clipping the rivets on that specific gear, hence why you had more luck with a 12sp chain (slightly narrower). I should also state, this only occurs under load, it is not noticeable in the stand.
@lethbridgecarboot53889 ай бұрын
Did you solve this issue?
@danielpeters27089 ай бұрын
Hi@@lethbridgecarboot5388, no unfortunately I haven't revisited the issue since. I have however, read numerous reports of CS-M5100 cassettes being returned/replaced under warranty due to the rivets being loose and the 4 largest sprockets moving independent of the entire cassette body. In my case, there's a small amount of lateral cassette movement (within tolerance), and the rivets appear intact. I'm yet to check a few other online references such as the cassette splines/freehub body interface however i would assume the issue would occur underload in any gear if that were the case.

Good luck with that - curious to see how it works out. Cheers

I'm riding a Canyon Grizl 6 with a GRX 10-speed 2X setup but I really want to decrease my gear inches on the low end. The GRX-400 rear derailleur is paired to an 11-34 cassette and the front 2X chainring is an RX600 crank with 46-30T rings. I would love to get a larger cassette and/or smaller chainring to help with lowering my gear inches as I use the bike for touring and climbing with an added 50 pounds is really difficult at 25 gear-inches. As it stands now, the rear derailleur only supports up to a 36T cassette, which does almost nothing to lower the gear-inches, taking it from 25 to 23. The goal would be to get that to sub-20 but I am having a time finding drivetrain combos that would work. Any suggestions?

I want to do something similar on a road bike. My new bike has Shimano 2 by 12 mechanical 50/34 and 11/34. My idea is to get the GRX derailleur with a 12 speed 11 to 51 cassette and replace the 34 up front with a 47 tooth chainring. I call this setup "inbetween" gearing. Others call it "halfstep". This yields 24 unique gear ratios over the entire range. What are your thoughts and would it work? Thanks

did that require to change the 11s chain to 12s chain due to much larger size of the 50T?
@alexball59076 ай бұрын
I had some trouble getting this to work, but the problem turned out to be chain length. On my 36t chainring, I needed to add two links to the chain to get the correct chain length. The standard Shimano XT chain is 116 links, which is ok for 34x51, but for 36t you need 118 links. When I finally found the dealers manual it says you might need to add up to 6 full links! So frustrating that the standard chain length is too short.

I tried to migrate from GRX600 2x11 to GRX610 2x12. I bought 2x12 shifters, 12sp cassete and 12 sp chain. Rear derailleur GRX812 remained and it doesn`t work with 12sp shifters. 12sp shifters pull little bit more cable in 1 click. So if smallest sprocket works fine, - coming to the larger sprockets - chain starts to rub larger sprockets and needs to let loose the cable. After this - larger sprockets work fine but smaller work worse - needs to pull up the cable again.

One By drive trains were made popular because Bike manufacturers wanted to sell some stuff , that is their highest priority. OneBy's kinda suck though for a lot of reasons. If you haven't spent a few years riding a TwoBy drive train then you wouldn't know what I'm talking about. When you bend the granny gear on your 1by then you may get it, if you are strong enough to do that. Quicker shifting transitions between down hill and up on a 2by also.

I tried multiple bikes and multiple combinations of shifters; grx 810, r7000, r8000, r5800. I tried 11-46, 11-40, 11-34. All had the same repeatable issue. There must be a very narrow/specific setting that works and I'm missing it. Interestingly, this mullet shifting problem is very similar to when my hanger has been out of alignment. Either way, too fussy for me to wanna deal with out on the road if anything gets bumped out of alignment.

Sorry for the late comment but I’m really hoping someone responds. Currently building my 1x up and rolling component options through my head. I have the Gevenalle CX shifters on the way which are compatible with GRX but only up to 11 speed with the index (I could just switch it to friction so I have full 12x functionality if I really wanted to). I also know the GRX 11 speed derailleur is compatible with the SRAM 10-42. So my original plan was the GRX 11 speed derailleur with the SRAM 10-42. However I’m now thinking that I should instead get the GRX 12 speed due to it having a better cassette range and setting the limit screw initially so I can’t over shift. This way I have more cassette options in the 1x11 and even the ability to switch to 1x12 with the change to friction shifting if I wanted. I guess I’m just looking for the confirmation that this does in fact make sense due to the advantages of the GRX 12 speed over the 11 speed. Thanks for anyone who reads this and responds!
