Itachi is a character who learned the process of evolution through difficulty and trauma - thats why he let sasuke see the murders of his clansmen (it allowed sasuke to be relentlessly focused on a goal - later on he realises he could have handled it differently through sheer force of will but was humble enough to see his own limitations, bearing in mind he was young and already predisposed to being exploited for his talent and that perspective blinded him to his own perception. you could argue the reason sasuke became what he did was this one action of Itachi. You could also argue he bottlenecked sasukes potential which he learnt over the passage of time and why he was so grateful for naruto being part of sasukes life. definitely a hokage in the making had he not had his illness

In his novel those guys give itachi a hard time about his beliefs towards the village and the clan One of them were secretly working with obito. But then Obito betrayed him for itachi instead. Itachi was definitely written to be evil at first. But then things changed as the story took a turn in some gay direction because of fan serves Let’s distance ourselves from Part II knowledge for a bit here. Notice how Itachi and Kisame were set-up. They’re overlooking the ruins of Konoha and their mission is to take the 4th Hokage’s legacy (which we assume to be Naruto at this point). Before that, Jiraiya tells Kakashi that Akatsuki, a group which Orochimaru joined, are starting to accumulate power in many different forms. The Nine-Tails, a beast of incredible power, is no doubt one of their targets. Itachi and Kisame have actually found Naruto (Kisame notes finding him at a ramen bar, presumably Ichiraku) but are only stopped because Kakashi notes something is strange about the two. There’s a clash, and the two retreat once it becomes apparent that this fight will involve a lot of people and attention. They hunt down Naruto, lure Jiraiya away from him and attempt to take him by force. Itachi brutally beats Sasuke when he arrives and they flee from Jiraiya after a short confrontation. NOTHING about that could be seen as positive. Mind you, this was even before we knew Shukaku and Kurama were part of a group of tailed beasts. The Nine-Tails was introduced as a calamity in the very beginning. Itachi was known for slaughtering his entire clan and nothing more. He was set up to be evil from the very beginning. It’s only after a story shift is decided that Itachi’s actions end up being good. Up until that point, nothing he does is actually beneficial for Konoha. His actions are only seen as good when the backstory for his actions is written out. If Itachi was meant to stay evil, he easily could have been. But the story decided to see what would happen if he was good, and that’s how it played out. Look, I get what’s coming next. You’re going to say “Itachi returned to Konoha to scare Danzo and didn’t hurt anyone too badly because he’s spying on Akatsuki for Konoha” Except before we even knew any of that: He puts Kakashi in Tsukuyomi without knowing if Kakashi is actually able to withstand it. The Sharingan helps some, sure, but it’s not guaranteed, as we saw with Sasuke later. He actually attempts to kill 3 Konoha jonin (Kurenai, Asuma and Kakashi) once he learns Kakashi knows something about Akatsuki. He lures Jiraiya away because he knows Jiraiya is too difficult to face head on. He doesn’t actually disagree with Kisame offering to cut off Naruto’s legs. He breaks Sasuke’s wrist, slams him against a wall and forces him to relive his most painful mental traumas. Let’s break it down, shall we? If your real intention was just to let Danzo know you were alive, you didn’t even NEED to engage any of the jonin. All you needed was someone to have spotted “an individual with a Sharingan” which is going to be Itachi since there are only 2 known Uchiha left and it’s pretty easy to tell Sasuke apart from the only other option. If you’re really on the side of Konoha, you won’t throw out your most powerful genjutsu just for a courtesy call. Even Kisame notes that using his ocular jutsu too much is not good for him, so there was no real reason for Itachi to use that sort of genjutsu if he didn’t have to. It’s not about being believable either; Itachi CHOOSES to use Tsukuyomi above other methods. He didn’t even have to use genjutsu in the first place, it’s just an introduction to his character that Itachi chooses to be brutal with his genjutsu. Keep in mind it’s not the appearance of Guy that makes Itachi want to leave. It’s Guy mentioning that he’s contacted ANBU that makes Itachi realize they are quickly going to be outmatched. That’s why they flee in the first place; before then Itachi and Kisame still had the advantage. Heck, even after being tired from using Tsukuyomi he’s still in favor of killing Kakashi, Kurenai and Asuma. The appearance of Guy just makes Itachi more cautious, but not worried. If he REALLY was just letting Danzo know he was still alive, there was no need to actually continue trying to kidnap Naruto. But at that point in the story, they’re weighing their odds against Jiraiya so they are not abandoning their mission. Itachi could have just convinced Kisame that it’s too dangerous. Kisame would’ve disagreed a little, sure, but would have ultimately agreed that they should just give up for now. They make sure to lure Jiraiya away, but are also aware that it is not going to fool him for a long time. It is also Jiraiya who dispels the genjutsu on the lady; it wasn’t timed by Itachi. Itachi was really serious about stalling Jiraiya for as long as possible, and it’s Kisame who notes that they both knew it wasn’t going to buy a lot of time. If you’re acting in the best interests of Konoha, you’re NOT going to let Naruto be crippled. None of the jinchuuriki that were taken (at least, that we see) had to lose a limb before being captured. Yet, Itachi remains silent while Kisame is actually considering these options. It’s not hard to disable Sasuke in the fight. Instead, Itachi chooses to break his wrist and inflict serious mental trauma on Sasuke. Mind you, Itachi’s been an ANBU captain. He knows other ways to take out Sasuke without expending a lot of energy or even wasting a lot of time. Itachi even goads Sasuke on with the idea of powerlessness; you don’t need to do that to raise a fighter who’s going to kill you one day. Everything he does to Sasuke is a choice he makes; he is definitely skilled enough to choose other options. Everything is set up to show Itachi as a dangerous antagonist. In fact, without the backstory that was later introduced, he would have never been seen as a good guy

Wrong. Itachi put Kakashi in Tsukuyomi because Kakashi mentioned about the organization. That being said, he showed what the members of the organization are capable of. He just wanted to show them their difference of power level and strength so that they could prepare and know what's ahead of them. He had actually supplied the leaf village little information before the Akatsuki made their move later in shippuden.

I personally believe that Itachi has become an overrated character. In my point of view, a lot of people glorify his killing of the clan when I believe there could have been other ways to deal with it--instead he is forced to kill hundreds of people, some are probably innocent bystanders who had little to nothing to do with coup and some are definitely children. I actually cannot completely understand how Sasuke seems to get the hate while Itachi gets the glory. Now, Sasuke is a pretty annoying character, I disliked him for some time, especially when he joined Orochimaru for power--but he is driven by his hate, which Itachi had planted within him so that Sasuke could "become strong enough to face him and kill his older brother". If anything, for me this is a pretty foolish and cruel plan to make Sasuke strong. Sasuke is justified with having hatred against his brother, I mean, wouldn't you hate the person who not only kill your parents, but your entire clan? I'm not saying his actions are all justified, going to Orochimaru was a bad idea and only made him more vengeful and well, more "emo" that he was. Also I believe Itachi's actions for peace is wrong (please lemme explain): Yes, the Uchiha is far from being blameless, but there are strong basis for their anger against Konoha...how would you feel when your entire family is secretly being ostracized and monitored by armed men? Not to mention that Konoha is indeed a system created by the Senju, and with this the Uchiha is threatened that one day, they'll be completely cast off from the place they helped built. Now, the coup is also quite selfish, especially against those people in Konoha who had really nothing to do with the Uchiha issue, but it was an action driven by fear and frustration, it's only logical that the members of the clan would feel the need to protect their own, at the cost of someone else's life. In regards with Itachi, he had also done the same thing that the coup would have done and that is the death of many people, no matter if it was just an ordinary civilian or a child. So, taking this to account, his actions for peace still sacrificed a lot of men, women, and children, it's just that it wasn't Konoha. In a way, he was his own coup, but worse, he let Danzo get the better of him. Hypothetically, I believe Fugaku could have been talked to with reason, afteral, Itachi is his son, and if he was made truly aware of the pressure that Itachi felt, he would probably think of other ways to mend the relationship of the Uchihas with Konoha. That is why, in all honesty, Itachi is a retcon character that is written in way that fans would see him as this tragical dark hero, when actually, he made the wrong choice(s) for his vision of "peace". The Uchiha clan has met their untimely death at the hands of their own clanmate (and probably their own heir), and for me, that's no peace at all, especially for the Uchiha Clan who probably just wanted to live without people thinking bad of them and having skilled assassins watching their home almost everyday. Now, do I hate Itachi? No. But the glorification and retconning of his character has become almost unbearable. It would have been better if people stop thinking of him as this dark hero who was forced to make a sacrifice because he has no other choice--again, I think, if Itachi was thinking right, he would have seize other opportunities that cause lesser casulties than the death of an entire clan of families.

Danzo’s so unbelievably gross. Killing Shisui was such a diabolically strategic move; 1) Shisui was going to stop the coup de tat in its tracks by forcing Fugaku to change his mind and Danzo didn’t WANT peace, he wanted the Uchiha DEAD, 2) he wanted Shisui’s eyes for himself, 3) if Shisui HAD lived long enough to be seen by any clan member and if they had found out their golden boy was attacked w/ stolen eyes they would have started the coup IMMEDIATELY which would have given the village reason to exterminate the clan even quicker, and 4) Itachi was easier for him to manipulate and it would be even EASIER if he didn’t have the ONE person who was actually a support network for him. Like dude. When they first brought up Shisui, Itachi had BAGS under his eyes. He is GRIEVING and STRESSED, and he can’t say shit about any of it to anyone. Him snapping and knocking around the police officers is one of the most HONEST, impulsive things we’ve ever seen Itachi do. Sasuke shouting at him just made him put his mask back on.

I never aclualy hated Itachi because of how wise he is how much he cares about Sasuki. I remember watching Itachi Vs Sasuki and Itacha didn't kill sasuki even though he could have just killed sasuki in one blow. And I also remember his last words were "I know you hate me, but that's what big brothers are for." And dies. That moment almost made me cry. Well he also said something after but I don't realy remember. I need to watch the scene again.
