David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Saturday, 19 October, 2024) Some years past had I built this kit; I had nowhere near the resources for accurisation, nor the skills in constructing, the replica you present to us here. Thanks, Greg. I prefer building my aircraft models in flight. This one I placed in a distinct 30° bank to port, inscribing what in the actual was a pylon turn at round 500 to 1,000 metres’ altitude, and varying in diameter based upon mission parameters). I lacked the acumen to determine how to drive the propellers. Shortly prior to that time, I had read of supplanting them with a disk of thin, transparent plastic of the same diameter as the blades; one then would paint on each a blurred suggestion of the propeller. At the end of it all, however, it looked terribly unrealistic and cheesily artificial to me. In researching the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar USAF Cargo Transport and the Fairchild AC-119K Stinger USAF Gunship (as much as I could online; most such articles or videos are observations of aircraft aficionados of varying capacity, with a number of service personnel giving their firsthand experiences), I learnt that an AC-119G Shadow had preceded the plane in the Italeri kit. One of little instructive value, yet of some interest, is a KZbin video: “John Morgan's AC-119K Stinger Gunship” (John Morgan, Saturday, 22 December, 2012), featuring his 109-inch (2.7686 m) RC flying replica (actually, just under 9 ft 1 in; I infer that he had made it in 1:12th-scale, rounding its wingspan to the inch. I rather expect that he also had built another three-car garage to house the beast!) The actual C-119 has a wingspan of 33.2994 metres, or 109 ft 3 in. In 1:72nd-scale: 46.25 cm, or 18.21 in In 1:48th-scale: 69.37375 cm, or 27.3125 in (2 ft 3.3125 in) In 1:32nd-scale: 104.061 cm, or 3 ft 4.96875 in (40.96875 in; 1/32 inch short of 41 in) In 1:24th-scale: 1.387475 m, or 4 ft 6.625 in (54.625 in) And you were dubious about a 1:48th-scale model!

Nice build Greg. Back to basics with the brush painting, but a great result. Remember building this in the 80s as twenty something year old along with Italeri's C130 gunship. Thought the same about the black plastic too.

Another cracking build Greg. I built the old Airfix AC 47 last year for a magazine article using only materials available to me in 1974 when I first built one. Hence, for me, no airbrushing just old fashioned and wonderfully cathartic brush painting. It was terrific seeing the AC 117 here and I’m now going to have get one of these now and follow the same route you have. Keep it up mate; I love the channel. Les

I like black plastic, it shows defects better, and it's conducive to black basing technique. Although obviously depends on the colour scheme you're planning to apply. When I saw the molds stacked up there, I knew this channel was worth subscribing to ;)

As a mainly tank modeller I'm just nearing the end of my second aircraft, and I have a new found respect for aircraft model channels. You make it look much easier than it is. Cockpit glazing, masking so that the paint doesn't run down panel lines and trying to make everything so smooth after filling are skills I am having to learn through trial and error. a great build and compared to my Airfix Bf109 that thing is a beast. Great job.

Amazing build, Greg. The result was very nice model. You always surprise me positively with your montage I'd like to help you with the brush. In my experience, it would help a lot if you used a brush with long, thin bristles. I use this type of brush a lot when I need to do contours. With them we can shake a lot, but the track is not lost. They are also used to draw letters, as they do not go outside the outline. Today I learned another tip from you. Wash with water and detergent... breaking the surface tension and making the acrylic paint slide better in the corners. Thank you very much for sharing your experiences.

Greg, this is by far the most undercooled cynic build vid I've seen of you and I absolutely loooooooooooooooove it !!! Introducing the 16th century pig's ear in modelbuilding is exactly the way more people should put things into perspective. The way you tackle kits is most relaxing. Great subject, horrible kit. The interior almost looks better than the outside cast. Love the lime green instead of the interior greens out there. And for sumthing completely different, Greg : somehow this time I got the feeling you might be a teacher IRL.

Hi Greg, I just came across your AC-119K which is one of my favorite aircraft and I have a few of them in my stash, and I really appreciated that you chose the VNAF marking version (cause I am the South Vietnam then citizen ;) and all I build are VNAF birds). Love your build, especially the hand painting technique with acrylic paint ( I have to try it :) ). Lastly, it's great to see you identified the wrong issues of the kit's nose and outboard auxiliary jet pods and the finish is just the real thing....Awesome!
