As a Brit, It warms the cockles to still see Harriers flying. Yes, I know it's August 2019 now, and the curtains are coming down on its career and service life, but a shout out to the USMC, Spanish Navy and Italian Navy for keeping it flying, long after our governent abandoned it due to "budget cuts". Whilst the F-35B may be far more capable, there'll always be a soft-spot in my heart for the Harrier, Buccaneer, Jaguar and Tornado. But please, let's all take a minute to stand back and salute the marvel of the Harrier, from the initial concept by Hawker Siddeley and the Bristol Engine Co. to the later Anglo/American venture with McDonnell Douglas (Boeing) that produced the much improved Harrier AV-8B. I think we can all agree that's it's a marvelous piece of engineering, and is a credit to the engineers who designed and built it, and to the pilots who actually had the job of flying it. Goodbye, old girl. We love you, and we miss you, but we will never forget you, because you truly were the first of a kind.

Nail on the head with that comment, couldn’t agree more. The distinctive sound of the Pegasus engine is something the F-35B cannot be compared to. Once you hear that, you the Harrier is on its way to help the boots on the ground and make the enemy have a very bad day at the office.

Cool! We had a couple with us in Belize back in the 80's. A lot louder in real life 😄 I was doubly lucky in that an RAF base I stayed at in Wales (RAF St. Athen) had a bunch of Vulcan bombers stationed there in the mid 70's. Amazing planes, both.

The beauty of Harrier is that you don't need large carriers. Instead of the big carriers Britain has built, why i don't know, should have built a fleet of smaller sized but more carriers. I assume F35 needed a longer run to carry a decent load, something Harrier lacked. Also smaller carriers are a smaller target. Sink a big lizzy and that is one large ship at the bottom of the sea.

From what I have heard, it is advised that they usually only uses VTOL mode when landing. Harriers when fully armed and fueled are way too heavy that their engine end up burning more fuel than necessary. After combat mission, the jet should be light enough that VTOL landing is critical

3 combat variants of the AV-8B (so not including the TAV-8B trainers) AV-8B - Original model, smooth nose cone housing the Hughes angle rate bombing system AV-8B Night Attack Harrier II - All weather and Night update. Distinguishable for a small, but rounded bump on the top of the nose housing FLIR. AV-8B+ - The final and definitive variant of all Harriers with true all-weather, multirole capability. Distinguishable by a more pointy nose housing the APG-65 radar instead of the angle-rate bombing system. The FLIR bump is still present on top of the nose, but is now squared off.

@@nemdenemam9753 When I say "He cant", I talk about a takeoff with enough weapons/range(fuel) to be useful. But yes, technically, he can. That's the primary problem of STOVL planes, even with a short take off, they are pretty limited. The vertical landing itself is hugely fuel consumming, if you add the vertical takeoff, it's just insane. You need to have a greater TWR than 1 (needed to vertical takeoff) for STOVL airplane, it's too dangerous if the plane is not able to cancel his landing for example. So yes, he can, just not operationnaly efficient.
