Really brings back memories of practicing Italian longsword (briefly) with the Chicago Swordplay Guild many (many) years ago. My favorite move was basically this one, except starting in porta de ferro instead of boar's tooth. Good times.

My school works with Fiore and the only difference I see it that we step off-line in the sottani and back in for the final cut as the sword usually stays on the back foot to build power.

This also works left-handed. I can swap between right and left handed wielding, and lefty boar's tooth seems like a decent attack. You move your right hand(bottom hand) to the right as you rotate your left hand palm up. The nice thing is you can control how close to the head you strike, like a thrust, but it also puts up a natural guard between you and your opponent. Let's say they throw a Zornhau at you right handed and you're in boar's tooth guard lefty. You perform the move mentioned above, cutting their head AND stopping their sword. Seems like an interesting idea.

My HEMA group always used to snipe at hands with boars tooth after baiting our heads. So they would swing and we would lean back, step off line and swing up at the wrists. Given the many small welts on the arms and cussing, I would say it was highly effective.

German :" That's just Streichen" But on serious note, the German system does explored this technique a bit deeper. The opponent sword would not get deflected all the time for you to come back down. If he stayed hard, use Duplieren. If the way is shut, use the zwer to the other side and then Duplieren.

Sadly I cannot fence cause expensive and third world but something the game Hellish Quart thought me is that fence isn't much of an exchange of parries but a rock paper scissors where the first to correctly read and counter the other will win. And that's usually in the first 2-3 moves.

Wouldn't his strike have more momentum going down therefore negating the upward pull? Just curious on how this would work in practice.
@SellswordArts
@SellswordArts Жыл бұрын
The false edge attack to his blade is called a beat parry. The idea is you negate his incoming attack with your rising strike. You displace his blade offline, and you open up a Target
@FigureOnAStick
@FigureOnAStick Жыл бұрын
To add to the official reply, the power of the beat actually comes from the non-dominant hand pushing the pommel, as you would a thrust, striking against the flat of the opponent's sword. Consequently, the displacement is actually occurring on a different vector than the primary momentum of the attacker's strike, one which is not well supported by the attacker's body structure or momentum. More powerful strikes are actually easier to parry with this technique, since the attacker will be carried further off-line from their own strike's momentum, giving you a bigger opening.
