In this video I explain to you why I made this video: • ITALIANS TRY ITALIAN A...
This video is so funny hahaha This is what happens when you serve this type of Italian food to an Italian. Watch the video to see the Italian reaction to some of the most popular Italian dishes served in Italian-American Restaurants. Italians are very proud of their food and food is one of the most important things in Italian culture. Italian cuisine is well respected all over the globe and it's been ranked in the top 3 cuisines in the world for many many years. Italian cuisine vary from city to city and from region to region and every dish has a story and tradition. Eating Italian food should be a memorable experience. There are so many different recipes in Italy and Italians who live in Italy haven't tried all of them yet. Next time you order a chicken pasta or alfredo pasta think twice. Don't waste your money for popular food but instead learn more about Italian culture and it's food. For Italians Food is more important then the bible.

@@thesaucylorax True. And I can't make sure but I'll not b surprised if American Italian foods are more popular than 'real' Italian foods among non-Italians, for example Asians. As an Asian I'd say we appreciate American cheese the most, followed by British, and maybe French, but we don't usually like 'authentic' Swiss/Greek/etc. ones, maybe not authentic Italian ones too. We don't like how 'real' European cheese smell. Too strong.

I wonder why Italian food is considered healthy? Think of all that starch and carbohydrate they have in their diet. Stuffing yourself with carbohydrates is great for athletes and other exceptionally active people because they need a lot of energy. The body breaks down carbs into sugar while this is good news for sports people it causes the average person to gain serious amounts of weight in the medium term.
@aliceiannaccone9113
@aliceiannaccone9113 7 жыл бұрын
Stephanie G that's actually not true, the body breaks up the carbs into atp, which is needed for cellular activity. and just one thing you should notice: italians together with japanese have the highest percentage of 100 year-olds. if our diet (as i'm a proud italian) wasn't healthy there wouldn't be so many old people

Authentic Italian food is not Italian-American food. If the food is made like how native Italians would make it, then there's no American element. Good Italian food from good Italian restaurants most probably serve authentic Italian food. It makes no sense to pay a premium for an inferior imitation.

From experience, I think the general quality of pizza in Italy is very good while in America it’s on a sliding scale from inedible to heavenly. I know this is sacrilege but pizza was made world famous not by the Italians but by Italian Americans from the US. Saying one is better than the other is a misnomer as they are really two different things. Ramen is technically not Japanese, it’s from China but it was the Japanese that adapted and made it world famous.

The quality of the food, especially pasta, is not only based on the origin of the pasta itself (there are two main types of pasta: pasta fresca is made with eggs, pasta essicata is made without eggs and is the most used in Italy), but also on the WAY you cook it, serve it, and plate it. You just CAN'T cook pasta in cold water (you first have to bring the water to a boil at 100 degrees C) and without salt (use "sale grosso")! We also do NOT cook pasta in pans (unless you've already boiled it in water until it's "al dente" and then you finish off the cooking in a pan with other ingredients, like oil + pepper flakes + garlic), or use excessive amounts of meat or fish or cream cheese as toppings/sauces. For instance, take "pasta alla carbonara": first of all there is a specific type of pasta you must use - and that is spaghetti, preferibly thick ones -, and second of all we do use "guanciale" (which I am not sure is the same thing as bacon, I need to proofcheck that) but with moderation! The ratio of pasta to meat should be roughly 3:1... not like in your "spaghetti chicken carbonara"! As an Italian, I don't even think there even is a recipe that uses chicken as a topping/sauce, not even with "ragù" (the product of cooking ground meat with "odori" like carrots, red onions and celery). Post Scrittum: I literally have no idea where you read that "the United States is increasingly becoming a leader in the fine cheese making"... I truly believe we have a wayyyy DIFFERENT perception of what "fine cheese" is, and it certainly is NOT that repelling-looking orange block of gummy unkown substance you pass of as "cheese". I'm sorry, there just is no competition between THAT e una bella forma di parmigiano reggiano! (You've just been ranted from a 17 year old Florentine girl, ciaoo)

I am Italian and mentally open to experimenting with new flavors. In America I ate very good things, but obviously eating traditional dishes and so it is for the rest of the world. The moral is that it is difficult to cook different foods from one's culture if no one teaches how to do it correctly. But it must be admitted that the Italians are a people who make cooking "art", they are a creative people in this too. For most of us it is a real "ritual".

I've made Cajun Alfredo pasta for many Italians who have enjoyed it thoroughly. As a foodie I don't understand why you can't wrap your head around the importance of quality ingredients and experience. Cultural knowledge can help, but it's not entirely necessary. Should we all just apologize for cooking each other's food and go back to eating only what is geographically native to each country? Again (maybe now you'll remember me) that would mean no tomatoes, chocolate or pumpkin for you!

Having done a bit of research on this - these dishes are not "fake" Italian food, but rather the cuisine created by the Italian immigrant community in America (mostly quite poor and mostly in New York City) in the early 1900s. It's an immigrant cuisine which combines some of the techniques and themes from Southern Italy with ingredients and cooking methods which were readily available in NYC in the early 20th Century. What wasn't available was the sort of hyper-fresh ingredients that make Italian food in Italy what it is (fresh-seafood, lots of fresh vegetables). What WAS available at the time was cheap, fresh beef in in large amounts and at prices much lower than in Italy (Remember, the American cattle industry was BOOMING at the time - with Western cattle being shipped East and beef EVERYWHERE - this is also the same time New York Steakhouse culture developed.) Also, while fresh vegetables were largely not available, CANNED vegetables were cheap and widely available - especially canned tomatoes, which became the staple sauce-base for Italian-American food. The industrial nature of the cuisine and the cheaply available beef are what differentiate Italian-American food from Continental Italian food - large meatballs that would have been wasteful in a 19th Century Italian context, tons of canned tomato sauce, and in the case of Pizza - the most traditional and oldest New York pizzerias use COAL-FIRED ovens rather than wood-fired ovens that you would see in Naples, because New York pizza evolved as a cheap way to feed Italian laborer going to work in the factories. So, please don't make fun of Italian-American food just because it's not the same as Italian food in Italy - it's a cuisine with a rich history, born out of people from Italy who were faced with very challenging circumstances as they immigrated to New York. There are a lot of blood, sweat and tears mixed into those dishes, and they deserve respect.

I live in Canada and I know many Italians. I have NEVER known an Italian in my city to shop for food in any place but an Italian-owned and operated market. I’m sure there must be Italians out there that do their grocery shopping in chain supermarkets-I’m just not aware of any. This preference for Italian establishments among Italians generally also applies to restaurants. When they must, they will venture to the odd burger place, diner, sushi, Thai, Greek restaurant, or steakhouse, but overwhelmingly, when left to their own devises, they will frequent Italian places to the near exclusion of anything else. This singleminded dedication to their own products and cuisine is sometimes carried to extremes: for instance, many of my Italian friends are convinced that their regional cheeses and wines, their foie gras and truffles, are vastly superior to those of France; they insist that their engineering, machinery, and automobiles are better than those of the Germans; their olive oils better than those of Greece; their modern furniture is sleeker than Danish designs; that Italian bespoke tailoring is finer than that of Savile Row, their fashion and perfumery second to none, etc., etc., etc. For all their cosmopolitanism, I find that the outlook of a great many Italians - even the more sophisticated types - is in this regard, remarkably provincial.

Back in the "old country", they had the culture all around them, so it was fine to be more open-minded and experimental. The safety of familiarity was right there to fall back on when things got bad. Also, there is the xenophobia. I can imagine Italians are one of the people who are subjected to racism and prejudices. Also, if you keep telling your Italian friends that French cheeses and wines are better, that German cars and machinery are better, that Greek olive oil, Danish design, British tailoring, and so on and so forth, that everything not Italian is better, they will tell you you're wrong. I know Finland has her faults, but I'm sure not to talk about them to people who hack on her.

What's your point though? I know lots of Italians who won't eat anything OTHER than Italian. They won't try Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern or anything else for that matter. What does that tell you about them? I'm sorry but like any other cuisine in the world, if you use quality ingredients and serve up fresh dishes, Italian-American food is as good as anything out there. If you serve people frozen pizzas and spaghetti and meatballs out of can, they're going to have a bad day. One place in particular is the the Mulberry in Buffalo, New York in the Bethlehem Park area. Everything is scratch made including their exceptional mozzarella. I challenge any Italian from the motherland to try their food. I'd bet my house that they'd love it. Also, keep in mind that I have no skin in this game as I'm from Toronto, Canada, but I've visited the US and a lot of Europe on countless occasions so I feel like I have some idea as to what I'm talking about. Plus I'm half Italian so I've witnessed this attitude from a lot of the older generations in my family. Living in a city like Toronto - where I can get anything from Ethiopian to Sri Lankan - has allowed me to be introduced to some foods that I would easily take over a good bowl of pasta. Don't get me wrong; classic Italian dishes from my father's region are exceptional and some of my very favourites. But a good bowl of pho or ramen is absolutely divine and tough to beat in my eyes.

Or even crazier wine is exclusively a drink from the caucuses because that’s where it originally was fermented, ignoring the fact that it became the most popular alcoholic drink throughout the entire Mediterranean. Chili peppers came from South America yet it’s a staple ingredient in India, half way across the world. Your argument holds no traction. We know it's "fake Italian", but that doesn't mean it's a good representation when you serve them precooked frozen food. Spaghetti and Meatballs is only "fake" because authentic Italians don't serve meatballs on top of their spaghetti. But I'm sure that someone in America could still cook and serve up a pretty damn good bowl of spaghetti and meatballs that would meet the flavor approval of those Italians.

Allan, you miss the point dummy. Why is a chicken Caesar salad that is supposed to be for one person, literally big enough to feed 2 or even 3 people? How about making it 1/3 to 1/2 the size, and lowering the cost? I don't want a "to go" box ( as classy as you may find that) , so I can eat wilted salad the next day.
@alanpeterson4939
@alanpeterson4939 6 жыл бұрын
Just order one and share it then. Or just ask them for a half salad. Most places will be happy to do that for you. They serve large portions because customer satisfaction is the most important aspect of business. They never, ever want a customer to walk away thinking they paid too much for too little. You give the customer more than their money's worth because you want them to come back. Most Americans laugh when they see some high-priced restaurant put some thumb-sized piece of chicken, next to a baby carrot, drizzled with some yellow sauce, with a sprig of parsley on a plate for $50. It may look good, but the average Joe ain't paying for edible art when he sits down to eat.

They used very poor examples of the food, one thing I noticed, the Pizza served is not Good representation and like a real authentic NY Style pizza pie. My grandma was Italian and from NY and used to take us to this place her friend owned for Pizza in the 70's, it was the best Pizza I have ever had in my life and the attention to detail was something I could taste in the pizza, the right spices, herbs, gallic buttery taste the dough, the fresh home made sauce made from fresh tomato and some sort of rigorous stewing process, it's a deferent kind of taste that you can't get at your local Domino's!

Yeah, I agree, the examples were bad. It is true that Pizza was popularized more in the states, than it was within Italy, Carbonara is a post-war invention but I don't so how that is relevant. A lot of this comes down to foreigners perception of Italian cuisine as opposed to what italian cuisine actually is. It is way more than Carbonara and Pizza.@@windowsalternative2203

This is completely true. I learnt to cook proper Italian food by family/close friends. When you go abroad they often ruin "improvise" the dishes.

I try to explain myself better, certainly not all are chefs but certainly in Italy we have a great taste and 'a "culture" of food, something that the United States will never have because of politicians in favor of the omg ... everyone boasts of the best things that your country can give, then Italy is proud of its cuisine and its art while the USA has the ability to stabilize nations and make wars all over the world ... everyone prides himself on that that has ... to everyone his pride ... I prefer mine because if the ° ° Italians are critical of the kitchen there will be a reason why there will be a reason if the USA wars and has been murdering for 230 years .. You eat shit and you are also convinced that it is good while the real food you have never tasted it.

True Italian American " cuisine " was born out of economic restraints and availability and should not be lumped in with something Pizza Hut, Olive Garden, or any chain " Italian" restaurant would serve. Our immigrant grandmothers created Italian American cuisine and our moms and aunts specialized in preparing it. In my opinion it is every bit as valid ..and as good.....as " real" Italian cuisine.

That' s BS right here... You cannot make a ANY dish without proper ingredients. You cannot make Czech svickova sauce without loads of root vegetables. You cannot make Russian borsc w/o beet. You cannot make English roastbeef out of a bloody chicken. You do not use cheddar in Italian mac&cheese. It is just completely different food in States. Once you lack them and use substitutes, then it is substitute for the meal. Simply as that. You cannot call it Italian food anymore. It is inspired by Italy. If anything.

I'm Italian, and I lived for a long time in LA while i was in college, telling the truth I find unfair that this guy makes fun of the italian/american food pretending it's all bad,. I have to say that surely some of it it's not the healthiest stuff, neverthless, I got used to it once I started to live an ordinarly life in the US, and i liked it too.. (except macaroni and cheese ....besides not being italian at all, it's a really bad junk). It's a cheap shot if you give this food to old italian folks be cause you have a guaranteed result...which is a negative response. The reason is simple.....Italians are quite conservative in their feeding habits (indeed we like to eat well and our way), old italians are basically impossible to satisfy even if you bring them to the best restaurant in town... 60% of the times they might refuse just because they're not used to the taste at first glance, the other 40% is because of that silly italian proudness about the old "italians do it better" thing. In California I saw many things called Italian and cooked by vietnamese or mexicans...some stuff was really unknown to me, some tasted good....some was ridiculous even to look at... the bottom of the line is that we do really eat different, but doesn't necessarely mean all the italian/american food is crap (when cooked properly), we can get use to it.... The stuff though must be cooked on demand...not for many like in the fast food restaurants ....otherwise chances are it won't be liked.

I'm Sicilian and literally everyone I know eats pasta every day, once a day (although I'm sure many Italians don't.) Dinner is usually bread based, breakfast is usually a sweet croissant or roll, coffee, milk, cookies, Nutella on Fette Biscottate, and the best Sicilian breakfast of sweet brioche dipped in almond granita. Last time there, they thought my husband so strange for eating eggs for breakfast. Yeah Vincenzo, you served them up nasty frozen food, but these people were very rude and snobby, but that is how Italians are, and it is true! They have a lot of pride in their food and culture, and they should, but it doesn't mean they should be disrespectful. Italians grow up believing they are the best in everything and that Italy is the best place in the world, and don't get me wrong, I'm an Italian and I love Italy, but when you have that attitude it makes it hard to appreciate all the other beautiful cultures in this world. Also, last time I visited, about 3 years ago, I stayed for quite a while and American food was really popular. But whenever a cousin served me up "American" food or we went to an "American" restaurant, I didn't criticize the "Italianized" American food and call it disgusting and inauthentic, I'm not that rude.
@JFP1988
@JFP1988 8 ай бұрын
There's a lot of snobbery around Italian and French food. And you're right it is a bit rude. I think the problem is when you call it Italian food or compare it to the authentic dishes. This video got me thinking about my own grandma's cooking. I love her pasta sauce but even though she grew up in Southern Italy and was taught by her mum you probably won't find the sauce she makes on any menu in an Italian restaurant in Italy. I think it's probably quite unique, and therefore technically not authentic but it's based on authentic Italian cuisine and I'm sure not every family and individual in Italy cooks in exactly the same way. If you approach food in this manner you can miss out on good food and the food culture never evolves.

My Mom's people were Swedish and German. She was excellent cook. I loved her spaghetti and meatballs but as a kid, you thankfully ate what was on your plate. Fresh garlic was an exotic ingredient, our grocery stores never stocked fresh mushrooms. Our pasta choices were spaghetti and macaroni, the latter of which I still can't look in the eye. Apart from meals and helping with the washing up, I was barely tolerated in her kitchen. If an Italian cook dared to venture in with alternative ideas, there would have been blood shed.

I believe this occurred because the rest of the world regards our cuisine as one of the best (it may not be the best, but we can't deny that Italian cuisine is at the top). Food is our pride and joy, and we are so proud that the world sees our culture through the food we prepare that we only want the best version. And it may appear arrogant or selfish at times, but we are living up to expectations.

István, I'm not. I'm sick and tired of seeing the hungarian flag on italian restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors and everything. Out of jest I always go inside and order something hungarian, then complain why they don't have it. If they want to rotate the italian flag it should be green, white and red, not red, white and green.

I am Italian. I know how food from Nonna tastes like, and I know olive garden and co.. are not representatives of Italian cuisine. Nevertheless americanized Italian dishes can also taste good when cooked with good and fresh ingredients. Nobody of my Italian family would be so ignorant towards food they don't know.

That's good. I used to enjoy mocking variations of Italian food until I realised that my Italian grandma's recipe for pasta sauce probably isn't "authentic" even though she grew up and learned from her mother in Southern Italy. I love her pasta sauce and I think it's good to have an open mind or else you might miss out on good food. I'm sure families have their own unique recipes even in Italy.

A lot of people would still eat it though. These peoples' reactions were very indicative that they couldn't even stand to be near it, playing to the Italian factor, are you gonna hate on them as well for acknowledging that a big reason they don't like the food is their background (a big part of which is being Italian)?

This video is insulting. My grandparents were born in central Italy in a little town called Valleluce. The recipes were passed down and are still made the same way nonna made them years ago. Grandma brought her recipes with her. The exact same recipes she used in Italy. Of course, the ingredients may differ a little simply because we may have different soil and growing conditions. They adapted to this. I have no way of knowing where the food was prepared for the Italian tasters in this video. There are many many places in America that makes really good Italian American food. Of course, this is not authentic Italian food. We are in America! This video is baloney.

As someone who is Italian-Australian and who’s family is 80 percent Italian 10 percent Prussian/German and the rest being Australian I can tell you that the Italian side always argues about the food that is cooked for them. I think Frozen Pizza isn’t that bad but I’ll admit when Authentic Italian Pizza beats it.

I agree with your basic points, but there is a difference between fast/cheap food (such as the slop in this video) and food from good restaurants, or from expats in a foreign country. None of the food in this video was something that a quality restaurant would serve. It looked like something a person would get from Walmart.
