Note: Friends is really good on balanced because enemies don't get angry with you when the spell fades. On tactician, they do get angry with you when it fades, so it's not as good of a choice there (although it is potentially still worth taking)

Haven't tested it out yet since launch, but in EA they would confront you after the spell ended. But all you had to do was cast friends again, and a good Persuasion check gets you out of trouble. Ultimately you just need to be far away enough from them when it wears off. Hopefully that has stayed the same.

Now that I am about halfway through the game, this guide has been so immensely helpful. I have been pure Warlock so far, and loving it. I will probably come back to it for some kind of "ultimate" playthrough after making 8 characters lol. Definitely enjoyed pure Warlock more than I expected so far (and might just stick it out after playing around with some options), though I am really excited to use respec to try out the Paladin multiclass.

I subbed to you aaaaaaaages ago because of your CK3 guides, most of the games since I hadn't much interest in, but glad I didn't unsub. I love your guides, especially because they aren't min/max and you emphasise "do what feels right". Luckily Larian have a good knack on normal difficulties to allow you to make really unoptimal characters and muddle through. My first DOS2 party would have lasted 2 rounds against my last one, but I still finished the game. So you provide great info and insight without just a blueprint of "this is the best". I'm really bummed that Larian Studios haven't fixed Pact to the Tome. This was my second favorite build for DnD fifth edition. Them telling you what spells you're going to get at these different levels and with the book of shadows invocation takes away the joy of choice. I might have to break down and install a mod to correct this problem. Thanks!

"Disguise Self" works more like Alter Self in the tabletop game, so if you take the form of a Gnome or Halfling you can get through small gaps that are too small for your normal character. I took the level 1 in Sorcerer for the Draconic armor, four cantrips, the shield and enhanced leap spells (plus disguise self from Gold), plus proficiency in Constitution saves before going Warlock for the rest. If you use Polearm Master with a spear or quarterstaff you can use duelling when fighting with a shield for up to 6 extra damage per turn (8 for a Fighter at level 11) while keeping the AC bonus from the shield.

Oathbreaker gets aura of hate at level 7. Aura of hate allows you to add your charisma modifier for even more damage. Vengeance comparatively gets relentless avenger which is pretty weak. You should go Oathbreaker for the multi.

My lock is a Gith Medium armor so they can melee Martial weapons so they can use that flaming sword from the first battle. It gets better with pact of blade Astral knowledge for the saving rolls

At 26:22 you're misreading the feat Mr. Sparty "so you can not outright fail" The feat refers to the damage dice. You can still roll a 1 on your attack roll and miss. Keep doing, "Whatever god you believe in"s work. I very much enjoy these type of videos. But I long for the days of Bannerlord streams.

Build suggestion from a DnD Nerd (& BG3 addict as of right now) - if you want to play mainly as a Warlock cause you love Warlocks, but struggle with the low HP & AC, only 2 Lvls into Paladin & the rest into Warlock is a great dip to just get you some party support/healing, heavy armour & shield proficiency & the ability to smite with your pact weapon. Pair that with the Illithid power where you autocrit by choice & your gonna be an absolute beast in Melee & in ranged combat (Eldritch Blast+Agonizing Blast obviously) Enjoy 🎉

@@edwardgonzalez976 it's probably a matter of taste - do you want to start out fighting from range with Eldritch blast and don't care too much about being squishy in the first few levels? Start with 2 Lvls of Warlock (to get to the Eldritch Invocations quick), then 2 Lvls of Paladin, then the rest into Warlock again. Personally I would start with the 2 Lvls of Paladin though, to have a little more HP & AC in the beginning and the Lay on Hands feature from the get go.. and to have Smites quickly. I would choose all the support spells from the Paladin that I could get. Then I would go the rest into Warlock from there & probably take the Pact of the blade at Warlock Lvl 3, if you enjoy melee fighting.. pair that with awesome Warlock Spells like Arms of Hadar & Armour of Agathys & you'll be super fine 😁

Bind pact weapon will use your Cha bonus to attack, and give you proficiency. So any weapon you find is a good weapon for you. even if you have no str, dex or even know how to use it. Once bound it is usually better than the ones you can summon. Just make sure you rebind it every day, or you will not be good with a weapon you are not proficient in.

I bought Melf's First Staff, which is a +1 quarterstaff that also gives +1 to to-hit rolls, and spell save DCs. It's a decent weapon for the PotB because it benefits everything they do.

For me the easiest way to describe a Warlock is as a Ranged Paladin. Your spell progression feels like a full caster if invested, but because its reliant on warlock levels only it scales in multiclass more similar to how a Half-Caster would; warlock levels don't count towards spell slot progression. Unlike a full caster your limited spell slots force you to pick high-value spells per-encounter as opposed to being able to cast freely. However, this drawback comes with the benefit of having Agonizing Eldritch Blast which gives warlocks damage similar to a martial class. likewise Pact of the Blade giving CHA based damage makes for a potent melee damage dealer especially when paired with the right feats as described in the video. To that end, Multiclassing is the best way to interact with Warlock. The obvious benefit is combining CHA classes (Paladin, Bard, Sorc) which empowers some really crazy builds, however even a 3 level dip will give you access to the Pact Boon, 2 level 2 spell slots that recharge on a short rest, and Eldritch blast with two Invocations. The primary downside to this is that warlock multi-classes as a non-caster so even with 9 levels of a full caster your only going to have 1 5th level spell slot. Recently I've been focusing on Animate Dead for builds and think there is a pretty compelling Lich build with Tome Warlock 5, Necromancer Wizard 5 with 2 levels to play around with; I'm inclined to Fighter 2 or Cleric 2 for Shields and Armor. There also might be space to do Tome 5, Spore 6, Life 1. The build theory is Undead commander focusing on Agonizing Eldritch and buffs for your Zombies with a decent enough AC for Tactician.

Been playing a Cleric 1 / Chain Lock 5 and was thinking of taking lock to 8 to get two feats (spell sniper and +2 cha) and then doing 3 levels of fighter to get action surge and eldritch knight for the chained weapon (hate being disarmed by smug ass npcs) what do you think? i'm terrible at multiclassing lol cleric was just for the RP + heavy armor and shield profiency i'm using the organ rearranger as my weapon atm for the crit buff i cant really see what i would want in a third feat and getting heavy armour and shield is worth sacrificing the feat for imo

@@sideshowmo653 there are plenty of ways to do it and that sounds pretty solid, especially given the parameter of chain weapon. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of Chain Pact on lock, as I think the other 2 offer more bonus, but if that is what fits your concept go for it. You will be missing out on CHA weapon attacks and a second extra attack from Deepened Pact (5) which is a pretty big sacrifice especially if you want to focus melee. As far as lock 8, I think you would be better off taking Fighter to 6. Lock only really gets the bonus of level 4th level slots at 7 so I generally don't take it above 5. Fighter gets Extra Attack (Edit: stacks with Blade pact) and the special bonus of an extra feat at 6, so you end up with more total ASIs that way. You could build a pretty compelling Eldritch 6 / GOO (blade) 5 and then have 1 point for Cleric/Wizard, along with 3 ASIs for CHA, GWM/Warcaster, and Spell sniper, which along with using CHA for weapon attacks would be pretty solid for a melee lock. Alternatively you could stay on the caster side, and focus on fighter 1 for Cons prof, Fiend (tome or chain) 5, and 6 points of whatever you like. I've seen a lot of success with Wiz/Bard/Sorc in the 6 point split; all of which have some seriously nice bonuses at 6. If you don't have a bard in your party I'd go that route. as Song of Rest (2) and improved inspiration (5) give the group a TON of utility on short rest. You could play it as a caster on the Lore bard side, or play it Melee on Swords (instead of fighter) and use CHA for your spell DC to not have to invest in Int (Fighter would have to).

Currently working on a critical Warlock. Not sure if it’s good, and it’s probably way poorly optimized. But basically you take spell sniper, 3 levels of fighter to unlock champion, then find gear to increase your crit chance as well, on a great old one. Throwing out mega crits and fears so far.

I have one level in Wizard just so I can learn any spell from scrolls, and the rest (so far) as a warlock. I have him balanced with Wisdom and Dex, and got the int headpiece that gives me 17 int. My Con is also pretty high. Dump stats are my strength and Charisma. Pretty fun build!

Why dump charisma? That's your casting stat for every Warlock spell, including Eldritch Blast.

Well, you can start with 1 level of Fighter, Paladin or some Cleric domain to wear heavy armor

Take 1 level of Draconic Sorcerer. Your base AC is 13+dex, so 19 with Bracers of Defense and Ring of Protection. You get four cantrips (mage hand, shocking grasp, fire bolt, ray of frost for me) and proficiency in persuasion and deception (I take the Urchin background for stealth and sleight of hand) along with constitution save proficiency. Also, depending on the color you use you get different starting spells. I went Gold for the free disguise self, and took the shield spell and enhanced leap/jump. Having two low level spell slots that I can use for shield is pretty good. I used the Half-Drow for the charisma based spells, and the shield and light armor proficiency in case I wanted to respec later in the game.

Whats the best way to build defense for a warlock in BG3? In my D&D 5E game, there was a tattoo my character was able to get that raised his AC when not wearing armour. But since that isn't in this game, I guess my options are either armour spells or taking a feat for armour proficiency? Are there any better ways of going about it?

There's an invocation that gives you mage armor at will. Besides that there are many items in d&d that increase AC like bracers of defense or cloaks/rings of protection

Take first level Draconic Sorcerer, four cantrips, the shield spell and two low level slots to cast it with, and AC of 13 plus your dex mod, so free mage armor. If you take Human or Half-Elf you also get proficiency in shields so you can take one of those as well as your natural armor.

No. Pact weapons are melee only. In the tabletop you can bond to a magical ranged weapon, but not in BG3. You have Eldritch Blast/Agonizing Blast, what do you need a ranged weapon for? And no, using charisma means you don't have to invest in strength for combat, although you probably want your dex at +3 for the AC bonus, maybe go Human/Half-Elf for the shield proficiency that Warlocks don't normally have.

Maybe a dumb question but do cantrips scale off of your spellcasting ability and do all of them always scale with that ability? Say if i take fire bolt on a warlock will it scale with charisma or intelligence?

It depends! the racial ones - like say High Elf Racial - doesn't, it scales off of Int. But the CLASS specific ones will scale off of that class' spellcasting ability :) For the example of a high elf warlock, their "high elf cantrip" would scale off of intellect, but everything else would be off charisma - spell & cantrip. Does that help??

I am really struggling with warlock builds. I am on tactician and everytime I switch to Wyll to do his story, I get a massive drop in dps. He just doesn't hit anywhere as hard as Astarion, Lae'zel Karlach or Gale. I am trying to go through everyone's story but currently I dread bringing Wyll along.

I haven’t had luck with a melee warlock yet, but I’ve found a caster warlock to be very dps friendly. Make sure you’re taking advantage of hex early game, and try out some multi-hit spells like scorching ray. That combo alone two-shot a boss that TPK’d me 3 times before that

Eldritch Blast is the equivalent of a Heavy Crossbow, that scales automatically, two attacks at level 5, three at level 11, and Agonizing Blast adds your charisma modifier to the damage. Think of Warlock as a magical archer. If you do take the Polearm Master feat you can attack three times a turn with a polearm like a spear, and because Wyll is a human he has proficiency with shields that a Warlock doesn't normally have. It's why I play a Half-Drow rather than a full blooded one.

⁠@@freman007I gave him “Sorrow” the Glaive from the Druid’s grove and it’s been amazing, the free bonus action Cantrip plus Eldritch blast (repelling blast) bascially allows him to push enemies back AND pull them. Combined with Hunger of Hadar you can basically keep enemies inside of the sphere

One thing worth mentioning. It's pretty universal in warlock discussions to read/hear of how useful and powerful Eldritch Blast is, but I haven't often seen reference to one reason WHY it is so good. It's Force damage. I've never seen an enemy with "Force Damage Resistance/Immunity". If Magic Missile is the "guaranteed hit" multi-target spell, I think of Eldritch as almost the "guaranteed non-resisted damage" counterpart. At least as far as ordinary resistances go...gimmicks like Unstoppable stacks can still come into play of course.

Cantrips gained through pact of the tome use your charisma modifier, not whichever they normally do. For instance thorn whip would normally use wisdom if acquired through druid lvling or multi class but not with pact of the tome.

Getting efficiency, damage modifer and devil's sight are one of a kind, or at least very hard to acquire something that can replace that. I mean potions are so cheap, you can even carry around a bunch of beast speech potions.

There’s an argument to be made for Fiend’s spell selection. Scorching Ray synergies with Hex, and fireball is always a nice option.

still doing research but i think fiend can be really amazing in melee. hear me out With the begining feat, you get temp hp per kill, and if you're fighting in darkness with the see through dark feat, you automatically gain advantage on attacks, so you can also use the heavy togle feat (forgot the name, -5 to hit, +10 damage) and have a very high chance to actually hit, doing so twice, for potentially mad dps...with your oponent having disadvantage on attacks made against you (higher chance of miss). Then at lvl 11, if you know whats coming you can also atune your resistance to the damage type that's incoming the most (say fighting ogre, resistance to crushing). so even if they do hit with the disadvantage, you resist the hit and can have temp hit points if you already killed a weaker enemy :P That makes for some mad dps and survival potentila killing shit from the shadows :D Argument can be made that Great old one has similar ability as level 6 , but thats a reaction so can only be used once per round, as oposed to being in darkness you'll get it for each attack made against the lock.

Honnestly I prefer gething 16 at caracter creation. Only even numbers give a bonus and you will still need two feats to get to 20.

You can get an item in Act 1 that will give you +1 to any attribute. By going to 17 at character creation, it only takes one ASI feat to get to 20. Even without it, going to 17 means you can use a half feat to get to 18 or split the ASI over two attributes. SPOILERS When you fight Auntie Ethel, she will stop the fight when she's below 10%(?) health and make you an offer to let her go free. If you accept, or convince her with another option, she will give you some Hag Hair. If you fail the rolls, or simply kill her too fast, you won't be able to get this anywhere else.

If youre cha based, you can take actor to get deception and performance as expertise and 1 cha, so taking 17 is good option

If I wasn't multi-classing Warlock, I would always take 17 Cha. Get the hag hair to increase to 18. Pick up an ability feat to increase it to 20. Pick up the skilled feat (great for having your main character do everything), and heavy armour mastery or Great Weapon Master (depending on whether damage or defense is more important to you). That said, it's hard not to recommend taking 2-7 levels in another class. Eldritch Blast levels based on character level and in BG3 Blade Pact stacks with Extra attack. So 5 levels of a martial class + 5 levels of Warlock gives you 4 melee attacks per turn that scale based on your Cha modifier.

nay! :D You can re-spec any of the companions to be whatever class you'd like them to be. So maybe you're build out specifically Wyll to be a certain way, so you probably won't need as many skill proficiencies in conversational skills becuase he'll never be doing the conversations!

At level 3, put Wyll on high ground and blast away with Eldritch Blast. If a melee combatant closes with him, use Arms of Hidar then run away. Or have him be a flanking buddy for Asterion, just keep an eye on his HP. But most importantly do not forget to recast your weapon bind after every long rest. If all the sudden you realize Wyll's chance to hit with his melee attack is really low, odds are you have forgotten to pact bind his weapon.
