I was skeptical, but knights with maces and axes instead of swords and lances? Large brutal goatmen? In my noble knight faction? I LOVE IT!

Faey Rager really jumps out at me as an elite stack killer. The wait command paired with double strike and high initiative means if they charge you with any unit round 1, you can go last, strike twice, start the next turn and strike twice again. Since the opposing stack hasn't gone yet, it only gets 1 retaliation to your 4 attacks. Pretty neat. Just make sure to cast 75% ranged resistance when you can.

I can point out that you can research a passive silk income in the academy as arleon, you wanna get this to boost your fae production.

Fist of Order seems really strong with the Militia/Sapper since the +1 damage is per unit and Militia/Sappers can have up to 50 units per stack, that's +50 damage. And you only need 1 unit in a stack to activate it's ability.
@paulmihaisolon82922 жыл бұрын
Sappers are incredibly strong with small melee support The stake ability creates destructible terrain, perfect for a downtime turn, to stall the enemies. Easy to mass too. Also, they can stay in melee better than archers somehow. Ai likes to kill archers asap, with spells and units. Burning blood deals dmg over 2 turns Chain lightning can hit friendlies

You don't know how useful Sappers are until you find yourself facing overwhelming odds in a siege against mostly melee units. I once fended off 3 full stacks of High Legions, and the biggest MVPs were the 2 Sapper stacks constantly repairing the stakes while the Rangers, ballistas and Faey were picking them off. Sappers aren't that good on the offense but I always have at least 2 stacks on a settlement as well as some troubadours and Faey nobles to provide the creation essence needed to cast Earth Block.

Ironically, Heroes IV is my favourite of the series. It is gorgeous, I like fielding the generals in battle, I adore the art and love the music, and the multifaceted magic system is very much to my taste. With hidden spells and classes depending on your heroes specializations. Heroes II is my second favourite, that old school pixel art, the bright colours, the fantasy music. It was nostalgic even when I played it for the first time, I love nearly all of the old game in so many ways. Heroes III however is in that weird spot of graphics and artstyle I struggle with, I find the factions unbalanced as hell, and while there are so many different units they are all sort of the same. This game however doesn't quite feel like Heroes III for me, the artstyle is far better, the factions are far more distinct. And as my favourites are Warlock/Dungeon/Chaos I think I'll go with Arleon. They seem to me be a Knight/Warlock or Life/Chaos faction, as the fey are less D&D faeries and more vengeful celtic spirits feasting on human flesh. It also gives the rest of the faction a nice tone, the mounted knights are less paladin and more Mordred the betrayer.

Yeah but, like, citadel, rampart and fortress backgrounds... You can't just say pleasant pixel art beats those ;_;

" the fey are less D&D faeries and more vengeful celtic spirits feasting on human flesh" ...have you ever actually read the descriptions for D&D faeries? Those things are nightmare fuel, and that's before we start talking about the evil aligned ones... (maybe not as much in 5e, but they are still quite grim-dark, and true-ish to old folklore)

Give archers the research to extra unit stacks, upgrade human units ranged offence, get a wielder to archery skill 3, get 3 full stacks of archers with 2 full stacks of shield guys, get human defence research also... Win every game ever? Without even touching any magic or caring for mana, watch your enemies die one by one at the hands of 90 archers that bombard them

having played the game a good deal, i think that Arleon needs a better high tier troop. Faey queens are not just that good. They need a stronger flying melee unit - it dont have to be the classical angel from Heroes 3 but just something more interesting and strong. Faey Sprits/rager has too low a health pool as they often just gets shot by ranged units before they even reach the enemy units.
@whitewall22532 жыл бұрын
Spam mist on your faey spirits until they can get close enough to oneshot, Spirits May as well be ballistic missiles, use them to murder your enemies priority units.
@smarmydude30192 жыл бұрын
It's not that they're a bad unit, you're just not using them right. I learned before I even started using them, from killing them over and over again in the campaign, that Spirits are not tanks. They murder if you let them get too close, but a single shot from a half-stack of ranged units *annihilates* them. Best way to keep them alive is keep them in the back and let juicier, tankier targets go first - if you let your Spirits take point, you're basically just losing money, cause you're gonna need to buy more later. Every unit kept alive is a resource saved, after all. Don't be a moron, let your Horned Ones rush in and take the arrow fire, then slip your Spirits through the cracks towards the backlines (use spells for extra speed if their base-speed isn't fast enough) If this still isn't working for you, you're honestly better off not even touching the Faey, just stick to the barracks. Very hard to mess up shields and archers.

This is where the comparison with homm falls off. You can't send "high tier" troops into the fray and expect them to survive based solely on their upfront cost. Most high tier units in songs offer diversity in arsenal rather than big upgrades in stats. You can absolutely go toe to toe with *some* late game doomstacks with dumb full on shields of order/archer comp .

I can't get past round 35 in a Skirmish because the AI Wielders are at that point MUCH more powerful than I am. However, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Early fights go alright, then by round 20-25 I'm locked without resources because I can't win the fights I need to be able to keep exploring. I basically end up waiting near my base to get more units but by the time I can win the fights, I get swarmed by the AI Wielders with armies 2x my size. Do you think you can do a guide on how to actually go about balancing base building, unit building and exploration?
@Deceneu662 жыл бұрын
Hi, Upgrade your town quickly and get that second Wielder out. Use it more like a scout and resource gatherer and also move troops from town to main Wielder to resuply lost armies.
@austinkious39402 жыл бұрын
I've been struggling with the same problem. One thing I've found out is that having a lot of wielders is crucial to having map control. It is also important to focus on taking important sites as early as possible. For example, I try to take over a large settlement between rounds 15 and 20 (not easy for me yet, I usually have to take some tough fights to make that time). If I can within that time frame, the mid game is much easier. However, I still struggle with the late game against A.I. And I'm still very new to the game. If you have any advice, I'd like to hear it.
@VaernSul2 жыл бұрын
Hire lots of wielders to have better map control. This is very important. Always keep some to hang around your key towns, but don't idle them either. Leave your high level wielders to kill mobs and let the others gather resources and stack up on power. Don't tunnel vision too much on having hueg doomstacks, floating gold and troops is useful if you can recruit in a hurry when being attacked. Be careful of troop movements during combat, for both sides. Combat vs trash mobs have no wielder on their side, so being defensive/ stalling as much as possible to stack essence and unload big spells is a viable strategy. Get marketplaces in your settlements if you feel bottlenecked by resources. Try and feel which faction and which unit roster/essence pool you feel more comfortable with and build around that. Be careful of upgrades with resources requirements, it's okay to leave a building tier 1 if you can't afford the resource cost of upgraded troops. If you feel you don't need a building, sell it. If you feel you won't be able to hold an enemy settlement, raze it.

Is it just me or is the campaign AI OP? I'm stuck on the 4th mission on the Arleon campaign. I had a hard time in the 3rd mission but managed to cheese the AI. It didn't feel like I actually won the mission though. Taking that into consideration I decided to be more on the offence in the 4th mission and have roamed arround the map leveling up the 3 heroes you get in that mission and building up the economy. Out of nowhere 2 doomstack armies appear and I have to drain my economy and merge all my good units from all the different armies into one and I still don't win. What the heck. Am I playing it wrong or is the campaign AI cheating?

@@gentlesirpancakebottoms6692 Devs announced on Discord that they're going to nerf enemies in 4th mission... so yeah, it is not ideal right now.
@ivanrojt18622 жыл бұрын
I had same problem, the devs wanted a really hard mission like You would reach map last so they have everything when You need to take like 6/7 turns to reach a Town, ia Isnt cheating it has a LOT of resources and everything upgraded at the start and player don't, that is artificial difficulty and thats why they are nerfing the enemies (enemy has enough resources to revive wielder and replenish armies, and don't forget he have all upgrades). The other thing is that the mission is different from the rest, to win You need to: 1. Know each enemy wielder speciality (spell, melee or ranged), beat it and take the items so next waves are much weaker because items lose 2. Take settlements and eco buildings asap and don't take anything else, go and take enemy settlement to damage his economy and don't get so overhelmed but prepare for constante raids until You can produce more than him (so other 2 wielder explore for eco) 3. Know when to take each fight, in this missions sometimes is wiser fall back and take other Town until enemy goes away because until late Game, he IS stronger and richier than you
@gentlesirpancakebottoms66922 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That explains a lot. The mission feels unbalanced though. You more or less need to have actually beaten the mission before even starting it, or look up a walktrough in advance in order to succeed. Or getting bogged down having to reload all the time and maybe restart the mission a few times. I've been having a ton of fun with skirmishes though. But knowing this information I'll probably manage the campaign:D
