If there is at least one celestial ore mine near starting point my favourite strategy for barya is dire dreaths and hellroars asap. First turn you buy den, at second you upgrade it and buy second den if you can afford it(no need to upgrade it: u can upgrade units with first one) . Then, while upgrading city to lvl 3 buy marketplace and then workshop. In the meantime shops (2 in most cases - you really need gold with this strat) or some wood/stone production if you find yourself low on them. At lvl 3 build for cannons and upgrade it asap. Hire your first 5 of Hellroars asap(use market) and with 2 full stacks of dogs you can take down every early game treats: cannon take down shooters while dogs make it safe and kill everything that come near by. Only watch out for burrowers, but there good unit placement kicks in. And hero for this is either Aleah with musks or nimander for dogs. I usually start with aleah and then buy nimander to give her 10 doggos, but Mehry with +1 range and learning skill is also very, very strong first pick. Pity you didnt point out best skills for hero progression. I personally love essence leech as with few stacks of cannons and their high initiative you quickly fill your mana pool just by killing enemies. Pair it with cunning and prepared and all battles will end before enemy can even think about moving units. Learning ofc comes in very handy. Also if you heve the essence leech just upgrade your magis skills to get most of it too. But the river of essence you get from leech is usually enough to demolish enemy forces in first two rounds

There is also a nice little strategy of 4-5 slots of single steam pipers on a Lv2 destruction magic hero that can clear a LOT on a map by himself, while your main hero roams with the actual army.

I still feel like this strat is a bit more effective than I deem healthy for the game ^^ Thanks for sharing nevertheless, as it's really good =)
