As a Red Sox fan, I saw a lot of similarities between Benintendi and Verdugo. Both were .270 - .300 hitters that would play good corner OF defense, hit between 15 and 25 knocks, 40ish doubles, and would overall be about 10-20% above league average with the bat. Think of them like budget version of Jeter or Michael Young with the bat; a contact hitter that has respectable pop. With the way baseball has been trending it's unsurprising that this type of ballplayer is struggling, but I find that unfortunate. These types of players have been the important secondary pieces in many championship lineups in era's past, and it's a shame that this type of ballplayer has basically been out-evolved by the game into extinction. It's the case of "jack of all trades, master of none". Given that the league pitching strategy has been geared towards neutralizing the key trait that makes their others good (hitting a ball into the field of play and safely reaching first base), the domino effect on their doubles and home runs means they went from being above average hitters with average power to below average hitters with average power.

One theory I've heard is that the Yankees want to maintain Dominguez's rookie eligibility for 2025 so that he can quality for PPI incentives (i.e. potentially nabbing the Yankees a bonus comp. draft pick). Funny how PPI was added to _discourage_ service time manipulation...
@wt2351
@wt2351 Ай бұрын
I thought the same thing, but this theory was proven wrong. While Dominguez would maintain his rookie status next year with less than 100 ABs the rest of the way, he is not eligible for the PPI incentives anymore. According to official sport writers and the news outlets his time in the IL doesn't count against his rookie status, but it does count against the PPI incentives. If he were to win rookie of the year next year, he'd get the title, but the Yanks wouldn't get the PPI incentives. Basically, the Yanks are just a dumb organization who cares more about the "clubhouse chemistry" than winning... As a Yankee fan, this highlights everything that is wrong with the organization. They just use numbers and analytics to justify whatever dumb decision they make. There are no numbers anywhere that shows Verdugo is a good LF and deserves to be in the lineup. The guy is a rally killer and DP in a waiting. He is a K machine against lefties and a groundball to 1B/2B against righties. It is a wasted AB.

I honestly don’t even recognize MLB anymore as it is NOT the same game that I grew up watching. It’s more concerned about its image on trying to get the same attention as the NFL. The game was perfect before all the rule changes and instant replay. A’s aren’t the only team that wear white cleats these days. Batters flip their bats without repercussions. My beloved Yanks keep spending big money but players don’t mesh. They haven’t learned their lesson since 2002.

I really dislike his lack of hustle. Mostly running to first base. You get paid very well, run to first base at 100 percent it won't kill you. Maybe you can force an error and actually get on base. I was at a game a little bit ago and he didn’t even want to throw a warm up ball into the crowd because he thought nobody would want it. Judge made him throw it. Alex Verdugo can be a great player and a shining personality on an otherwise pretty dull team. The Yankees are the most corporate sports team in any sport ever. Verdugo is different. If anything they should alternate him and Domínguez for a few games until Verdugo can build confidence back up while also giving Donínguez some big league time without having to commit him to it full time.
