Red coral is as valuable as it is beautiful. Prices are soaring, and while that's good news for the legal red coral trade, the illegal trade is also cashing in. Red coral smuggling is booming, and nature is paying the price.
Red coral is a sought-after raw material for southern Italy's traditional jewellers. For centuries, the spectacular local 'coral riviera' has played an important role in the Mediterranean region - for the local economy and also for the ecosystem. But now it's not only under threat from climate change, poachers and criminal networks are making a fortune from the illegal red coral trade. A report by Jan-Philipp Scholz.

Wow. I just realized that a hat pin that I inherited thirty years ago must be made of red coral! I had no idea what it was made of, just that it was an unusual shape and color. She traveled to Italy several times in the 60’s, so it makes sense now.

The Tunisian city, Tabarca, was a Genovese city whose economy was almost completely based on coral trade. The Genovese people left in 1742 and permanently moved to Carloforte in Southern Sardinia and Nueva Tabarca off the coast of Valencia!

@@mihiec Yeah, there's still Genovese ruins in the city to this day, near the coast! And those Genovese who lived for two centuries in Tabarca developed their own dialect of Genovese, losing the words for ice and snow for example. It's an interesting story!

Here in Eat Africa we respect the endangerment of the elephant by not designing our jewelry or anything else with ivory. It appears that European and North African designers are irresponsibly using red coral without regard to its precarious situation. Very nasty!

Amazing to know red coral is not only precious in Japan, but also in the Mediterranean. Note: red coral is cut, polished, and then sculpted into figurines, especially in Okinawa, Japan.

Here is my solution: if somebody wants red coral, they have to come to the meditereanian and dive themselves or pay someone to dive for them. They can only take as much as they have payed and are allowed, similar to hunting tags. Coral are animals, so why not treat it this way?

In India Coral are used as Astrological purpose such as planet Mars represent by Coral. Wearing coral can increase your blood flow, reduce stress, increase stamina and aggression and last give you brevity. But all things work if you have authentic coral which match your astro sign. I am also compatible with Coral and Mars.

Why do you never talk about German problems instead of being so obsessed about Italy? Like all the dirty money Deutsche bank cleans every year: go ask informations about this to german government and see if they want to answer your questions... Italy is the 3rd safest country in the world this year after Norway and Switzerland, why don’t you talk about this?
