Just got back from Rome for the 2nd time, it was just like the first. Fascinating, plenty to see, but crowded, crowded, crowded. It really is brutal! Not for the faint hearted. I will definitely come back for a longer time, at least 5 days, with plenty of rest time and just time to unwind after being packed around people all day, it gets way too much.

Well summer is not the best period to visit Rome, October to march is much better and winter is generally mild . Also as for all tourist places around the world it helps to go very early and when needed to book tickets

Watching Rick Steven's video is illuminating! I now realize why Americans have a distorted expectation when they come to Rome. We do not mind so much! We are self-deprecating enough to see the merit of a genius who built himself an excellent reputation, traveling, the best job in the world!!! After all, it happened to me; I was afraid of going to New York where I meet a lot more welcoming and helping people than I expected and had nothing to fear walking around. They pickpocketed my husband in Paris, never in Italy even as tourists. So, what I wish is that Rick's followers do not worry too much about coming to Italy. Travel the world with commonsense rules, as Rick says. W Rick! Greetings from Rome, Italy!

This was a fantastic talk! My boyfriend and I are now going to see Michelangelo's Moses which we didn't see highlighted in any of our travel books. I like that there is also an acknowledgement of the propaganda in some of the art which is another interesting part of history.

i looked it up as well, the church is not a famous stop...at the time there was much construction but we found our way to pay the Moses a visit. I tend to visit Rome in the winter, just seems to work out that way. Found an epic gelato parlor, family owned for many generations w/ a letter from an American General during wwII forbidding enlisted men from buying ice cream...to save it for the brass. Incredible city. I enjoy the many little public fountains which are all unique and really help to cool you off if it's summertime.

Just great waiting buses that never arrives, but down the Coliseum! Lol I'm Roman bud, and I always thanks God for that. Dunno why, but I cant imagine myself in some other place; I grew up playing soccer with friends down the street near Foro Romano, having saturday breakfast chilling in Piazza Navona. Geting Xmas mess in St Peter, going at school in Palazzo Pamphili in Via del Corso. Yes, under most points of views we Italians, and me as Roman, we are lucky.

Very good advice here, thank you. Just to be clear though, St. Peter's is not a "cathedral"; it is a basilica. The Archbasilica Cathedral of St. John Lateran is the mother church of the diocese of Rome and is the Pope's cathedral; that is where his chair is aka "cathedra".

An AWESOME Etruscan age temple stood there!!! 600 BC since before Rome it had been there and they tore it down for this hideous monstrosity called the Wedding Cake. If you walk up the Capitoline from the side the base of the temple still remains under glass. Btw, the Italians hate it.

@8:35 Please show more respect for this building Mr. Steves. The Vittorio Emanuele II Monument holds great national significance for Italians. It is an architectural and artistic tribute to the Italian Risorgimento: the complex process of unification undertaken by Victor Emmanuel II throughout the second half of the 19th Century. It is regarded as a national symbol of Italy and every year it hosts important national celebrations. The largest annual celebrations are Liberation Day (April 25th), Republic Day (Italian: "Festa della Repubblica Italiana") (June 2nd), and Armed Forces Day (Italian: "Giornata dell'Unità Nazionale e delle Forze Armate") (November 4th). During these celebrations, the Italian President and the highest government officials pay tribute to the Unknown Soldier and those who died in the line of duty by laying a laurel wreath. Would you appreciate foreigners' snickering about the architecture of Washington Monument and Arlington cemetry? I know Americans aren't big on respect for other countries, but please...

I think you won't find many people that respects these great cities more than Rick. And he is allowed to like or dislike a building and voice that opinion. It's actually you that blatantly threw a whole nation's people under the bus by stating they don't respect other countries. Preposterous. It is you sir, who is being disrespectful. I am not an American btw.

K- Ampai I don't know if there's such thing as a slow season in Rome but I'd go in the second half of October: the climate is still very mild to roam the streets and it's not overcrowded with tourists, well, for Roman standards at least.

Tom Rankin Hi there.. I am planning to visit Rome-Florence-Venice in last week of November. Mainly to avoid crowd and economy. But I am wondering if Nov end a bad time..? I mean it is extremely cold or does it rain heavily in 20 days a month at that time. I don't want to be locked inside room while being there. I would appreciate your reply.

We've been to Rome in late November when it was cool and not crowded. Another time we spent the month of April and first week of May. The weather was nicer and maybe noticed more visitors especially that first week in May. This time we are spending the month of May...many more sunny days to enjoy. November was overcast.

I very much enjoy watching Rick Steves in Europe, particularly in Italy, the land of my birth, but I do wish he'd make an attempt to pronounce Italian vowels (AH, AY, EE OH, OO), especially the "A" and "E". Italian words spoken with English vowels just sound so English. I cringe.
