Synopsis: In 1996, before it became the infamous Italian far-right party Lega, the Northern League was an activist movement fighting for northern Italian independence. With local business owners tired of paying high taxes to support the struggling south, and corruption in the nation’s government in Rome, the grassroots separatist movement gained momentum. The Northern League is led by Umberto Bossi, who gives impassioned speeches to rapturous crowds who gather to see him and shake his hand. Though he compares himself to Ghandi, Bossi’s policies are often carried out through violence and threats, and he is always flanked by militaristic ‘greenshirts’. This informed documentary reveals the beginnings of the Lega, which would soon go on to be Italy’s third largest party, and the growing difficulties in the relationship between Italy’s north and south.

Oh Bello!!! A proposito dei vostri prodotti, sappi che esiste la UE che ci sono migliai di prodoti UE che si posso acquistare, qualora noi del sud non siamo ancora prodiuttori di essi, ma cmq se la domanda cresce ci si organizza presto. Detto questo io al nord ci ho vissuto e non parlo senza cognuzione di causa. Per quanto riguarda la secessione molto volentieri,non prima pero di avervi inposto una tassa per i danni di colonizzazione. Sappi anche che, la tua amica lega di secessione

i'm from naples and maybe these people don't know the reality which is beyond the Italian Unity process started by the Savoia...The "Regno delle due Sicilie" (the reign that included all the southern italy) was the third European Reign before the 1862...after the union the nothern italy took all his money (443 million liras-gold, over the 60% of the italian money) declaring in this way the beginning of the collapse that hit southern italy...if someone must be angry, you know who should be...

As a Canadian of Northern Italian extraction, let me say that if the separatists feel that their they can ingratiate themselves with foreigners on the basis of their petty grievances, a pettiness exceeded only by the neo fascists, they are mistaken. Italy's problems go far beyond laggard regions, concentrated as they are in the South. It isn't a problem of it not being 'German' enough, as there's enough of them working there. A bigger cause is neglect, partially from the North and Europe, but mostly because of a criminal class which features prominently in it's politics, and taints the politics of all Italy. What fuels this filthy political phenomena? REGIONALISM, exactly what is fueling the drive for Northern independence. Some say that the solution is a loud mouthed nationalist dictator, like Mussolini, to put everybody straight (ya see), but it would be times better if an improved citizenry unites as a country, in all its various dialects and languages, to straighten out it's political class. Bless the Italian people. Politicians and corporate clans, straighten out!!!

@@Libertyjack1 And yet we are forced to be part of a Napoleonic forgery that has no real sense of national community. There's evidence that the Papal State had a functioning bureaucracy and didn't need nationalism to thrive on, unlike this "Italy" thing.
