This was a game Italy won but were disappointed with their performance. Before the game, Italian fans were waving all 10 fingers at the American players (signifying that their team would win 10-0). After the game, both players and fans of Italy applauded the US for putting up a fight - even Roberto Baggio had to come to the US locker room to exchange his jersey with the US defender (I think it was John Doyle) that marked him. Even though Italy won 1-0, for the US fans, the team's performance was a source of pride.

Italy is historically a defensive team. Them winning a World Cup game with the score 10-0 is unthinkable.

@@phillipproussier3723 yes, and the US had previously lost to Czechoslovakia 5-1 and that team is nowhere near the juggernaut that Italy historically has been. 10-0 was obviously massive trash talk from the fans but it would not have been inconceivable after that prior game to think the US would lose by at least that score, if not by one or 2 more. Either way, it was drunken trash talk; no one actually believed that would be the final score.

This was my first game watching the US squad play. I remember USAs 1st game being trashed 5-1 vs Czechoslovakia. Watching this pregame with all of these italian flags being waved made me very nervous and very worried it was going to be a blowout 8-0. Man did USA played better and made it ugly for Italy to play. USA made me proud as an american ever since.

Italia 90 seems like a magical world cup⚽️👍🏼💙

Unfortunately, it was regarded as a poor World Cup with defensive tactics and only 115 goals in 52 games (average of 2.21 goals per game, compared to 2.71 for USA 1994 and 2.68 for Qatar 2022). That said, there were some great individual performances, like Cameroon's Roger Milla leading his team to the quarterfinals, but generally, Italy 1990 is regarded as a disappointing tournament.

There is more nostalgia than it deserves for the poor quality of football probably because of a few individual performances and due to being in Italy where the world's strongest league was at that time with most of the biggest stars like Maradona, Van Basten, Gullit, Matthäus, Careca, etc. @@chiemekanwaogwugwu9995

Guardian article got me here. Kudos to USA that’s a hell of an Italy team.

This was an incredible mismatch in talent, hard to believe the USA only lost 1-0. A feat to keep it that close.
