I started in automation in 1978 working for Allen Bradley. The original PLC was primary, PLC2 was just comming out, and PLC3 had not yet been released. No HMI, recording programs on a cassett deck, some terminals for plc3 weighed in at close to 50 lbs. But the greatest thing that is a constant, that you can build and learn on, are the basic control concepts, and understanding how equipment works, and what you can do to make it better. Get experience in multiple industries. Food, material handling, chemical, steel, etc. Cross industry experience really helps.

Very good advice for those who want to become an automation engineer. I am an automation engineer and working with plc, scads. Robot and more… Practice is the key for success.

I actually had the opposite approach. I didn't care about my grades but more about what I was learning. I struggle to learn while taking notes. So I didn't take notes but the notes were needed to study for the test.

It is always easy to find people who can program and service PLC. It is hard to find people who can make it from scratch. Select best combination of HW, design automatic cycle from blank, make it safe and user friendly and then write the code without mess and readable.

I only went to a 2 year school and got an associates degree. For most of my career I have been an industrial maintenance technician. But had always had automation as a hobby. I now design, build, and program control systems for machinery in a Nissan manufacturing plant in Tennessee. I do not do so much of the HMI, but mainly the ladder logic side of the equation. Often PLC code written by guys who have more education than practical experience are much more hard to troubleshoot.

Please, it’s called experience and when you get some, you’ll reflect and realize there’s always room for improvement. Field experience with panels both new and existing help to develop practical approach to applications.

Agree with you to some extent and also disagree. My experience says thats its more about going out of the box which is rather difficult for every student. But i might say that i am rather lucky when it comes to making plans and constantly adjusting. Most of students doesnt make plan on the first place and dont want to inquire. A curious mind leads you very far in life ❤
