Saying that someone would not look at you for having just a ccna is absurd. I got into a junior network engineer job with just my ccna. I have been in that position for a year and almost ready to take my ccnp encor. You will learn so much hands on when you get the position. If you have your ccna, apply and show that you want to learn and you will be just fine. Cheers

i was one of those people who (because of the military) had to speed thru my certification, then looked for a job in the civilian sector living in fear of being exposed for not knowing much. thankfully, they taught me most of what i didnt know on the job and were super patient. so dont be afraid to start before you're ready, if you land the job then you're ready and/or they'll teach you whatever you need to know.

Awesome video!. I had previous background in IT. I did an online CCENT course but never certified. However after I did the Google Network course, I read the CCNA books and Network+, with that I got a dual job in the CAD field since I am an Industrial Designer, but they really need also someone who can understand Networks. I got so much experience because I was able to do everything from structuring cable, active directory, solving huge mess of networks IPs, network deployment, VoIP, backups. VMs, site-to-site remote connections, accounting software with remote access. So I decided to change my career completely and moving to the CISCO family. I am finishing the CCST course fron NetCad, from the very beginning, and planning to continue with CCNA. I will highly recommended not jumping to CCNA if you do not have a background in IT or a experience in the IT field, do the CCST first. There are a lot of abstract concepts that would take you a lot of time to comprehend without experience. Everyone need Networks. This video is amazing, nothing to waste.

I really appreciate Keith's honesty and his practical perspective. In my social circle, the common advice is usually just to get your CCNA and call it a day. But as he mentioned, it looks like everyone has the CCNA and pushing for ENCORE is potentially away to stick out. Additionally, something that hasn't been emphasized enough is volunteering or shadowing someone in the field. It might seem daunting, but I'm definitely going to give it a try.

At my old IT job there was a contact center agent interested in getting into IT. He approached me for advice. I spoke with my IT Operations supervisor and decided to allow him to shadow us for a month. After coaching him and him continuing to work with us on and off for 3 years he was able to get a entry level IT job at another company. While not the norm it can work, depending on the company.

Yeah that's bunk. Even if it were true, you would still have small businesses that would need someone to guide their it departments. So, a former helpdesk agent with a ccna is probably perfect for that role. Perhaps for some huge corporation they don't need that. And like others have said IT/networking is practically a utility. You number a plumber for the pipes, hvac for the vents, electricians for the conductors and you'll need a net admin for the bits.

There is so much good information in here, as always. I got my first IT job in Help Desk without a cert. It is possible. Having a cert will get you the interview but not guarantee a job. You have to sell yourself in the interview. I approach studying for a cert like a business. You find a way to make time and I use my cell phone calendar and create recurring appointments otherwise life finds a way to intrude. Start with the fundamentals, it'll make more advanced positions easier. Think of building a new house. You have a blueprint plan and start with the foundation.

I've seen a lot of comments in here talking about the CCNA may not be worth it in the industry. I could not DISAGREE more. Just for frame of reference I currently hold a CCNP Enterprose with concentrations in Enarsi and Wireless Design and currently working on the CCIE. The industry has turned towards a jack of all trades when hiring for engineers and one of the biggest requirements and hurdles is a minimum of holding a CCNA. The industry is slowly phasing out System admins or Server Admins and the Networking world is absorbing them.

12:06 Highly disagree here. No network engineer is going to willingly take on an additional burden that will just slow them down. At 11:59, he makes the point that, "as long as they don't think you're going to slow them down". In what universe would having a person shadow them and ask questions either accelerate their work at the very least keep it the same? There is no scenario where having an additional newbie trying to learn from you and asking questions ISN'T going to slow that individual down. So point is, what's in it for that network engineer? They 100% know this person is just going to slow them down. So what they get out of it? Is this newbie going to teach the network engineer some other craft or trade they're interested in? Is the newbie a beautiful girl that will provide them eye candy ? 😂 My point is, no network engineer is going to do this for free out of their kindness of their heart especially with all the stuff I assume they already have on their plate.

Depends on if finances aren't an issue and what path you feel like pursuing. As someone with CompaTIA A+, Network+, and Security+, I've found Security+, by a long shot, has the most relevance in job postings for IT positions in general, REGARDING COMPTIA certs. I see A+ rarely, and Network+ even less. I see Security+ everywhere. Out of the three, Network+ was the hardest for me, just because theres a big jump from A+. The jump from N+ to S+ is very doable, you can study for and pass it in weeks or less if you do it right after the Network+. This is because theres a ton of information rollover and CompTIA has a very consistent way of asking exam questions that you learn to spot as you take them. So it might be an easy addition to your resume, with less prep time than normal. For networking CCNA is the gold entry standard. Im taking it soon, building a strong foundation with detailed review to prepare for the CCNP. I see the CCNA in job listings more than any other cert. CCNA is 300 bucks Security+ is 500 bucks (i think) Again, consider the path you prefer, or, if cost isn't an issue (especially if your work is paying) finish Network+, do Security+ right after, then CCNA and get the best of both worlds. Network teams value people with extra security knowledge, security and systems teams value people with extra networking knowledge. You can't go wrong with both.

There are no network engineers on the cloud team, despite us exclaiming that there should be. If I start today, after initial training and two years working in help desk, I’ll be ready for a network engineer job in three years. Will companies be taking on newbie’s in three years or will existing engineers be teaching the ai who will be the new newbies. So tough trying to figure out whether any career path will still be there in the time it takes to become proficient.

You shouldn't be spending 2 years in Helpdesk if your goal is networking. Use 6 months to understand the internal process and systems, take great notes, be vocal in meetings, then the second half to really show you want to be involved in networking. Communicate to the network team, demonstrate you can think through issues logically, take fantastic notes, and chat with them when tickets are escalated and resolved.
