Cool to hear his insight on the industry. But being able to move abroad, go through college, and take high level certifications all while not having a job is a luxury that the vast majority of people don't have available to them.

100%. There is no one way into this industry you have to find out what works for you. I got in with no degree, no certification, and no prior work experience. and in my first 3 years I landed my dream job.

You're right, Luke! The story actually begins well before my time in the US. When I was 16, I started a business importing vehicles from Japan, repairing and legalizing them in Canada, and then selling them. This venture funded my travel and studies in the US for the first couple of years, but eventually, I ran out of funds and had to take out some loans. It's definitely easier to study and focus on your career at a younger age when your only responsibility is yourself.

I'm in a weird spot. I'm almost 40, went through a year long boot camp for cyber security, and now I'm educating myself to get an AWS CSA. I already have a CCP, and I've been around tech for quite a bit of my life. Getting someone to notice my resume has been difficult.

The best advice I ever received when it comes to looking for a job is, If your applying for jobs but not getting interviews your resume sucks. If your getting interviews but not getting job offers your interview skills suck. I felt like it was harsh at the time but I decided to go back and throw out my resume and rebuild it completely different and I started landing interviews the very next week.

@TheBeardedITDad I figured it was partially my resume, and partially that lots of companies seem to be filtering by keyword and not even reading the body of the resume. Any tips on what should go in the resume? I've been blue collar most of my career, and we don't really do resumes.

@@792slayer I would suggest using ChatGPT to help build your resume. When I first got my CCNA i created a mock resume that i felt covered everything that I was good at, experience , skills, certs etc. Then I looked at jobs boards and for any jobs i wanted to apply for i copy/pasted the job description and put it into chatgpt along with my resume and told it to act as a Resume writer and Create the best resume for this jobs and include keywords that would make my resume pop out in any automated system.

@@792slayer How do blue collar jobs work then if not resume?
@792slayer
@792slayer 7 күн бұрын
@@cheesybeast1721 pretty much everywhere I've ever gone, you went in and filled out a hard copy application, and were interviewed on the spot. It's a different world. Actually, come to think of it, the one time I actually did put together a resume, the guy glanced at it, threw it in the trash, and handed me a generic application form.

I didn't even know how important it was to "watch podcasts" as I do now. Although I am working on a WGU Cyber degree almost complete, side learning on youtube has been an additional degree in itself.

It's a great idea to supplement your WGU degree with KZbin learning.

Haha, well, I’d say it’s definitely advantageous to start young when you have nothing else to focus on but work and studies. I have immense respect for those in the field who juggle families and responsibilities while still achieving certifications!

IT guy with 10 years experience in the field but no certs here. I took a break from IT for 2 years and have a job I'm starting soon, which certs do you recommend to someone at my level? Id like to get into the networking side of things more I've installed switches/AP etc but not configured.
