Thanks to everyone sharing information, especially the good doctor. I also have this problem and frankly I am so upset that women have to dig around for any information on vulva itching. Plus many doctors, especially men, just push medication. Here is some info that I have found that has helped me so much. Water and your hand is the best way to wash down there, no chemicals at all, not even from a wash cloth. I wash my bras (I get a rash under my breast) underwear, pj bottoms and bath towel with Ivory infant detergent (non scented). I throw in 1/4 cup of baking soda, wash it on the heavy duty cycle for an extra rinse. No fabric softener or dryer sheets. I air dry bras and the rest goes into the dryer with dryer balls to help combat static. Make sure your underwear is not tight. I have a portable bidet that I use regularly to keep clean (just water). Pat dry the vulva area only. I air dry after showers. I also soak in the tub with baking soda if needed. Especially be clean before bed. Sleeping is a big healing time so make the best of it. I have used zinc oxide but it is hard to get off when the skin underneath is sore. Mostly this all works but occasionally, I use Canesten cream or 0.5% hydrocortisone cream. Between all this, I am comfortable. Best of luck. Sorry for the novel.

Thank you for this video! I am 51 and for the past 2 years have been experiencing this. My nurse at the dermatologist I see suggested I talk to him about it. He didn’t say half the things you mentioned but some. He indicated this was a sign I would be out of perimenopause soon, that my body was almost going through puberty in reverse. I am also experiencing itch under my breasts and have difficulty finding a bra without elastic which makes the itch worse. I did recently find a brand of underwear called Huha which is great in case any of your audience wants to look into the brand. Again thank you for normalizing this. I didn’t know it was common but did know it was a lesser known perimenopause symptom

Menopausal vaginal atrophy is BEYOND itch it is knife fissures and skin abrasion just from wearing underwear! Ladies when you hit 50 do your research on ALL menopause symptoms these symptoms go far beyond just the irritating painful itch that occur at 60. Vaginal narrowing, UTI's, yeast infections from out of nowhere. I haven't had a UTI or yeast infection in 20 years because I take very good care of myself, but that has no bearing on the misery that befalls you. BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE I went to 4 GYN's in my Doc's office got no help and at 60 am dealing w/this! Dr.Dray is a godsend for addressing women's physical issues!!

Thank you for telling us this. I'll be more pro-active about researching menopause. My doctor won't diagnose me til I stop having periods for a whole year but I haven't made a full year yet. I know it should happen soon. My mother is not a helpful guide because she had to have a hysterectomy early and didn't have to go through menopause. I've got two girls and I keep them well informed about my changes so they can both calculate when they will experience their change and other issues that may arise that are part genetic.

Thank you so much for this video. We all need to talk about a subject that's actually quite common. When I called my gynecologist about this problem, I was determined not to be embarrassed and came right out with "I need to see Dr X about intense itching on the vulva." There, I said it, matter-of-fact with no coyness. So they didn't need to ask me more when I got there. The doctor had a heads up, and I acted totally cool about it -- like we talk about these things all the time. (I deserved an Oscar for my performance.) But it worked to get over that initial embarrassment.

Ive been itching there for a year andno doctor has even cared to address the cause. Finally hit the cause. Dye in underwear . i also use FF ALL and rinse with white distilled vinegar and again with water. Vinrgar gets out residual detergent and softens clothes. When drying the smell of vinegar disappears completely. Thank God for you angel dermatologist! Just tons of ❤! Thanku 4ever!!

Thanks for the reminder to not be embarrassed about talking to your doctor. It's really easy to feel shy about it, but just hearing your reminder is giving me the confidence to make sure I really talk to my doctor at my next appointment. It's hard, but the feeling of having checked in with my doctor about something is such a relief, it's worth it the stress of broaching the uncomfortable subjects. I’m a Retired OB/GYN RN...I have recently had a couple bouts of a contact dermatitis in and on the vulvar region and I finall have realized that the cause is the small paanty liners specifically for urinary Leakage. It became so irritated that I developed very painful cysts. All of this finally began to resolve after a round of a potent antibiotic. I hadn’t realized the actual cause at that point, but my skin overall is going thru major changes.. I’ve actually begun to acquire cysts c acne on my face, and I don’t understand why.vbi had a total TVH at 37 ...I’m now 65. I’ve never taken hormone replacement..due to the migraines which is the original reason for my TVH in the first place. They were severely affecting my life in every way possible, and the pain was unrelenting! The hysterectomy worked ! Now I’m suffering skin problems like I am 14! I’m embarrassed to go to the store because of mt complexion ...and hardly a week goes by where I’m able to go without hesbvy makeup. But worse than that, the urinary leakage along with a pH change is causing extreme itching and irritation. I am washing underwear in baking soda, and doing my best to wear loose fitting clothing. Talc made it much worse, and the only comfort is ice packs and sitz baths with baking soda. I’m in a hot California climate all summer and cold in the winter. I never had hot flashes or ant signs of estrogen depletion, but his skin situation is annoying!

Yeaaah! Dr Dray, thank you so much for educating women on this issue. I lived with undiagnosed lichen sclerosis for TEN years because I lacked skill and assertiveness in talking about this with doctors. I kept getting diagnosed with yeast but it never helped... and I knew it wasn't yeast... but I didn't know what it was and I was unable to assertively tell them it wasn't being addressed. The real diagnosis only came after I had developed a stage 1 vulvar cancer. Not fun. I know that's a bit beyond the scope here... but women need to hear these words and have their sexual health normalized... preferably BEFORE terrible outcomes take place. Thank you for this work... it's important.

I’ve brought this up to my GYNO 2 times. First year, she admitted I had a cut and broken skin from my itching, told me to use coconut oil. Came back a year later, told her the itching was still a really big problem and the coconut oil didn’t really do anything. She shrugged and told me to try anti-itch cream. I said “that’s okay to use *inside* the v@gina??” And she cocked her head like she didn’t understand my itching was actually more interior than exterior and just said yes. That was before the pandemic and I haven’t been back since but honestly it hasn’t gotten better. So even bringing it up to a GYNO of all people didn’t help.

Thanks for covering this issue--people might not initially think of it as a dermatological issue, but it is. I myself have been dealing with it in the past year, including going through unnecessary yeast infection treatment. One potential cause that you didn't cover here is that your own vaginal discharge may be irritating externally due to its low pH--after finally going to see my gyno about it, she identified it as the potential culprit in my case. Cleansing the area with sensitive baby wipes (NOT "feminine hygiene" wipes) seems to have helped.

I have a condition called vulvodynia and that requires me to rinse after urinating because if I don't it's going to cause a tremendous amount of irritation burning and itching. Even so I still get itching after I rinse so I'm not really sure what's going on down there except for dryness. I use something that's probably not conventional but it's soothing to me. I apply little bit of my body lotion down there and that contains menthol. It helps to soothe the area and to cool it down and it doesn't sting or burn. I use Gold Bond extra strength medicated body lotion. I put a tiny bit in between my hands and I rub it in and then I rub it down there and it feels really good. At night I use premarin to help keep the area healthy because if I don't able tend to dry out and my skin will tear and that's extremely painful. I recently went through two really bad tears around my clitoris area and that was extremely painful but the premarin helped to clear it right up and to heal the tears. I only put on a tiny bit and I rubbed it over the area where the tears were and it helped it to heal and it only took about a week and a half. Sometimes towards the bottom of my vulva area I get eczema and I use a very low dose steroid cream that helps to clear anything up that would happen down there. I recently had a very red raised rash in that area and I applied the low dose steroid cream everyday for about a week and a half and it helped to clear everything up and now everything's nice and smooth down there. My advice to anyone having a problem like this is to check in with your GYN first and if he or she is not going to answer you you can ask your pharmacist what you can apply down there safely and make sure that you only use a small amount and that you look at that area closely with a magnifying mirror and a flashlight to make sure that there's nothing really serious going on that you would have to see a doctor for.

Some toilet paper is a harsh texture and some are prone to a lot of lint. Those are also irritants.

I had what I thought was a monthly yeast infection, that seemed to come right bf my periods. I was getting a pap exam and happened to mention it and she looked closely and saw that my skin in that area was dry and cracked! Vaseline really helped. Now I know I need to watch for dry skin after ovulation (bf my period) and treat it with a barrier cream

one gynecologist told me i might have AIDS because of my itching. That was an awful ignorance and abuse she did to me. To this day, DECADES, i still have it. I try to do a labiaplasty, but myidiot plastic surgeon went super easy and didn't cut so much ("your case was so severe, i could just cur half") and i still have this problem. I had fantasies for years to just cut the labia minora and that's it!!! What i'm trying to say is: i think this is a problem with my labia minora protruding! Tampons are a no no!! they have preservatives, chemicals, and leave residue. I use the menstrual cup and changed my life!

I have become sensitized to essential oils (fragrance) in the shampoo and conditioner I was using. It also could be the preservatives and other chemicals they add to so many of our personal products. The worst of the symptoms was the atopic dermatitis around the vulva and anal areas. It was also on my inner thighs. My face, neck and shoulders had some patches too.. It was so intense, my skin turned purple and it was incredibly bumpy, painful and itchy... it absolutely burned. I saw a couple of doctors. The hormone cream they prescribed for the low estrogen and subsequent vaginal atrophy was not effective for the bigger picture. My skin barrier is compromised. Your videos saved the quality of life I was so quickly loosing. I am deeply grateful. I am going to go to a dermatologist to follow up, of course, but my skin is almost healed. I watched so many great videos and followed your suggestions to the letter. Rash gone, burning gone, itching gone, dry, flaky skin is resolving. You are the best Dr. Dray. Don't give up friends! Go and tell your doctor what is happening. As Dr. Dray said in this video "they want to help you".

I don't know why this video suddenly popped up in my KZbin, as I don't follow this person or had ever heard of her. However, I find it incredible that in the chapter "What causes genital itching", there was no mention of vulval cancer that almost always begins with itching. I had suffered from itching for quite a few years, and had tried many things from the simple such as changing toilet paper, detergents etc, to steroid creams. Eventually my GP said it was time for a referral to a Gynaecologist. As a result of that, I had a biopsies, and was found to have a condition called Extra Mammary Pagets Disease. Because it is such a rare condition, there is much debate as to whether it is a cancer, or a pre-cancerous condition. Either way, treatment is brutal. I had a bi-lateral vulvectomy in October 2020, and I still haven't fully recovered. That is just one type of vulval cancer. There are many others, while still rare, aren't quite so rare as EMPD. But unfortunately they are never spoken about, and even most GP's don't have any experience of them. They can strike at any age. Just this week I was heart-broken because a beautiful young woman that I had connected with through a Facebook support group, only 23 years old, had succumbed to her vulval cancer and had passed away. We had our surgeries done by the same wonderful Gynae Oncologist, and this poor young thing had been through so much in her treatment - multiple horrific surgeries, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, but nothing worked for her. I don't mean to be alarmist, but please, if you have continuing itching after trying the usual things to alleviate it, go to your doctor, sooner rather than later and insist on a referral to a Gynecologist and request a biopsy. Don't wait for years, like most who are eventually diagnosed with these awful cancers. I can only hope that one day, the stigma about what is happening "down there" goes away, and we are encouraged to self-examine our vulvas just as much as we are our breasts. Unfortunately, many women don't even know the names of their genital body parts, and find it hard to talk about.

I have been dealing with itch on the upper regions, it would worsen when wearing leggings. I started using water based lubricant as a moisturizer there ,after a week there is no itch. I think that the type of underwear may also play a role, since leggings would worsen the itch, I stopped wearing the shiny satinated underwear too.

I believe it to be the cause of my perineal cancer. It was removed 9 years ago successfully, the prevention treatment is a corticosteroid cream as per my gynaecologist to be used daily for the rest of ones life. Lichen Sclerose is a dangerous thing to ignore and I was in the right age group where these things seem to happen. I had never heard of it until I went to my doctor because I had a small lump down there and so much itching in the region.

Very informative video. So important to see a doctor over vaginal issues and never assume what is going on. I assumed I had a nasty yeast infection. Turned out, I somehow caught a staph infection in my vaginal canal. Omg, it's like a yeast infection on steroids! It was awful. After the meds I did start to get a yeast infection. Doctor gave me a med that took care of that quickly, thank goodness. Thankfully it seems to be cleared up now but it took months to recover from.

Toilet paper can cause irritation, trying different brands can be helpful. I had itchy parts, and stinging when urinating but no infections. I have tried EVERYTHING you said, including Advantan Fatty Ointment, Sigmacort, coconut oil, vaseline...I am always itchy/going through the itch/stinging cycle. Currently going off birth control after 8 years as I think it is the cause. Any advice? Thank you!

Might be vulvodynia? I know that vulvar itch with no significant skin changes might be related to that condition!

@@nostrasignoradelcarmelo Yeah I was diagnosed with that but I've tried everything (I'm currently on another birth control pill called Slinda) and the itching won't stop

I have lichen sclerosus. My GYN told me to ask my dermatologist to do the Biopsy since i was seeing her the next week. My Derm refused, said i wasn't the typical patient because im 40, and she didn't see anything abnormal. Went back to GYN to have biopsy. She was mad that my Derm wouldn't do it. Well, it came back positive. So now I've lost complete trust in her. She could have cost me years of vulvar deformity.

I stopped washing that area with anything but water. But use a little dove fragrance free on the back side!
