must be taken in context given the country is of only 2 million which is like a small city by modern standards, and the closest source for a hydro dam is 1000kms up the river. most countries will have a fossil fuel backup plan for a much greater population.

When the Portuguese left in 1974 there was an electrical infrastructure covering the main populated cities. All was destroyed in the multiple civil wars that succeeded independence.

Having worked on ships in the past I understand that we used a lot of power, especially in port when the cargo discharge pumps were running. But for a whole country, that a lot, the power ship must be specially built, HFO or Heavy Fuel Oil is horrible stuff, has to be purified heated and filtered a lot before the engines can burn it, we had quite extensive exhaust gas recovery systems to remove pollutants. Interesting video, fascinating your voyage of discovery how these countries operate, corruption is a way of life and the ordinary man in the street has to fight to survive.

Acredito. A minha tia viajou da Guine-Bissau para o Brasil, anos atrás, e disse que ao visitar a região da Baía achou algumas construções muito parecidas com a nossa capital Bissau e outras cidades principais da Guiné. Não é de estranhar porque muitas das construções são da era colonial portuguesa! (Ela também disse ter-se sentido em casa na Baía porque uma boa parte da população tem antepassados de origem africana)

so true. her rides provide great education. Over 25 years now I have built up my own solar generator, wire by wire. I see and experience how a small system can provide simple electric solutions. Yet I understand they have no "stores" to buy such equipment. and no money. relying on the gov for their solutions leave them literally in the dark

What an interesting and very informative episode about Guinea-Bissau. Believe it or not, I had learned a lot of things from you Noraly. Things that are normally out of scope from my field of interests. I consider myself lucky to have learned it this way, through you and your adventures, because I can retain them in my mind, rather than reading it somewhere. Slave trading of "black" before is very inhumane. They were looked down and treated low because of their color and poor life status. Had seen several docu movies too about it and always brought tears to my eyes. Heart-breaking to see families torn apart being sold to slavery. Anyway, I always love it every time you welcome us into another country. I am always anticipating for it, and say it out loud with you regardless of where or what time I am watching. Slavery back then paid little attention to color (more their wealth or lack of) and a lot of times tribes enslaved other tribes after conflicts and then sold them to europeans
