A painting discovered at Blombos Cave is thought to be the oldest known instance of human art, dating to around 73,000 years ago.

I agree with Johnny X. Paul is not completely wrong. In the nearby north of the Western Cape province in South Africa rock paintings by the same KhoiSan people have been radio carbon dated to between 10,000 and 73,000 years eg Blombos, Elands Bay. My reference is Cederberg Rock Paintings by Prof. John Parkington UCT publ. Krakadouw Trust 2003.

As Noraly said there is evidence that Bantu peoples were responsible for some of the artworks at the hills 4000 to 5000 ago. But some of the paintings have been dated to be as early as 24000 years before present.

Paul was not entirely wrong. From Wikipedia The oldest artifacts of humans, are around 100,000 years old. The oldest painting has been dated to around 24,000 , probably by San people. These are all Red. The white paintings are younger and Attributed to the Bantu tribes , circa 400 AD A few are only a few 100 years old. All in all around 2500 paintings have been identified in the area - justifyIng the world Heritage site designation

What I LOVE above the "home" ground, is that, although there are MANY opportunities to "complain" about how things happen and are "run", the "worst" comment has been "Oh well, that took a while / little longer than expected" and NO criticism of what you have to endure. Compared to some others who struggle to keep their sarcasm, criticism, "comparison" silent. Wow, how it has all changed in 20 years Noraly. The road out to Tsodilo was one of the most challenging 4x4 sand tracks in Botswana, even the road from Shakawe to Toteng. Glad that you do not have to struggle with those conditions. Pity you were not able to have a more rewarding experience at Tsodilo. Safe travels.

The paintings were very cool! I know you didn't want to leave Namibia, but just think what new adventures await you and us! It's very exciting. A quick check showed that Paul wasn't totally off. There have been recent finds of tools in Tsodilo dating to 70,000-100,000 years ago. So he had just mixed the facts up a bit.

Donkeys were domesticated only 6,000 years ago, and cattle (cows) about 10,500 years ago. The donkey looked like a modern donkey, so that painting was less than 6k-years old without doubt, nowhere near the 100k statement. Plus, I'm sure that so far the oldest painting discovered is in Spain and it's only 64k years old.

The drone views always give such a wonderful idea of the overall landscape. It was a fascinating scramble over the rocks to see the paintings, even if it didn't turn out as hoped. I especially liked the first rhino with those ears sticking up. A bit whimsical and very nicely drawn.

In SA I have also driven on pothole roads where pedestrians walk on what is left of the tarred roads and vehicles drive where pedestrians used to walk. If you drive straight on these roads you are drunk, if you drive zig-zag you are sober . . . 🤣

Thanks for showing me a place I have always wanted to.visit! I was in Maun and the Okavango delta area, back in the days when Botswana was still called Bechuanaland. This video reminded me of the roads which were mostly deep sand tracks back then. “ Lost world of the Kalahari”, a book by Laurens van der Post has a great description and provides background on the Tsodilo Hills.
