I needed a Returnal spoiler discussion and I gotta say that I agree completely with Max's story conclussion, the "this is all a dream/coma" thing is an easy-to-reach conclusion but there are certain lore elements that are proof of mystical shenanigans.

I don't mind endings that are super complex, mental or require a TON of deep reading and mental gymnastics. I LOVE Dark Souls lore, after all. But I also cannot blame anyone who sees that kind of contrived depth and opaqueness and thinks it too much.

There's most definitely a loop back to the past in Returnal, as there's logs on the ship talking about how she can't be rescued because ASTRA doesn't exist yet. Biome 4-6 clearly seems to be in the past

I’ve not played returnal but I’ve watched playthourghs and watched this discussion. I think she was the astronaught and found this planet defeated the enemy’s and became the god. All of the stuff with her mum etc had already happened so realise she now has these powers she try’s to change time and events by sending a copy of herself to the past over and over again to bring her brother and mother back as she caused it all. It’s more like the film the butterfly efffect in terms of the more you mess with the past the future keeps changing in ways you don’t want so things are better left alone.

Like Cohh I dismissed a big chunk of the story, because I assumed Selene was tripping balls. Even though I've found 70+ ciphers and shit. But in retrospect, the time travel theory does explain many things. Mainly the history holograms and some of the later glyphs.

A very late point which somebody probably has said already about Returnal: Maybe we shouldn't think about our "use" of time as moving forward on a straight line. Time doesn't really work like that (relativity etc.). I don't have a good explanation, but maybe this planet is like a black hole, distorting time beyond our understanding.

I hope Returnal devs are taking notes of all the best ideas discussed here and make DLC that confirm those theories. I really love the idea that the alien world is real and she really did escape and die of old age only to return back to Atropos. It would be such a shame if it was all just in her head.

It’s all in her head. It’s the stages of grief. Helios is her dead child that she “abandoned”. She finally comes up for air and can live at the end as shown by the true ending.

I cant drop 70 dollars on Returnal. Limited time demands I need to be able to pick up/drop the game as needed and not have to worry about progress. Returnal as it stands this moment, doesnt respect my time enough to justify 70 dollars.

The meta progression is in the traits you unlock for each weapon and the new items and artifacts you discover. It's also really fun to play mechanically, IMO. If you want something narratively heavy or that you can play on a limited time budget, then it might not be a good buy at 70 bucks. If you like super responsive and top tier third person shooting, then it is. Worst case, just keep you're eye out and watch for a sale. It was on sale a few weeks ago, so I'm sure there will be future sales that might give you a number you're good with.

@@johnoneil9188 Anji is fine. I'm not really sure what you're problem with him is. Go be a bitch in the corner then. The game is going to be fun and you're going to be missing out because one character isn't there. It's no different to me when people complained about X-men not being in MVCI or a certain character doesn't come to Smash. The game is still going to be fun and you're just going to miss out because of petty reasons. Dizzy is likely going to be DLC too because she sells. There are very obvious reasons as to why they don't put certain characters into the roster at release.

@@nathanielclaw2841 he didn’t complete the game. I was so immersed i had to platinum the game…it’s my most satisfying platinum. You have to put in so many hours in order to truly appreciate what housemarque did. The story, gameplay….details. It’s amazing!

If a game needs that much digging into to even barely understand the reason for it, its not a good game for like 99% of the people. The saving grace for Returnal seems to be the Gameplay in the end, to make it only half don't like it.

I have to disagree,if you can speculate about different interpretations of a story,that means it's a good damn story,same with souls games,people to this day talk about different interpretations of lore,it's one of the reasons why the games are so popular.

Everyone knows it somehow, watched it, but rarely you find people who actually fully played that game and you find even less people who understand it. Everyone talks just about how "fun" the Gameplay and difficulty is for Dark Souls.

@Sw4lley yeah I don't know if I would call souls games niche,niche games don't create a whole genre and countless other games inspired by it,also DS3 sold over 10million copies,sure it's not fortnite or cod numbers but those games are hugely popular. And yes,you can completely ignore all the lore and have fun just playing,exactly like in returnal,that in my eyes is those games strength,because the gameplay is fun. I will just add I'm not a souls fan,I'm not good at it,but you can't,just can't argue the series influence and popularity.

@@MrSekeeroMan you sure about adding „lore“? Because I agree about everything else you mentioned. But I have never seen anyone saying they bought a fromsoft game because of its lore. It’s usually just the ambient and gameplay. With most people never finishing the Game, atleast that’s what I get from conversations about it. Sure this comment here of mine probably triggered the few deep dive people, but please don’t just think about yourself, think about your Friends and others. The only people I know that finished a darksouls game are streamers who get pushed by chat and one single friend of mine, everyone else just played a couple hours and then dropped it thinking it’s kinda fun and okay.
