There may be a chance of finding an Itoh peony at reduced prices at Home Depot. Hoping they care for the plant properly, if you can wait until after the blooms fade, your store might put the Itoh's on clearance for half price. Since SRPs are a whopping $50 or $60, it's worthwhile to do some scouting.

Wow, talk about good timing! I was at Home Depot buying plant today to buy some plant supports and serendipitously found some yellow Itoh peonies, very full and healthy but no buds or signs of past blooms even though it's already close to the end of June so naturally I'm sketchy about purchasing them. I just left a question about this so hopefully I get a positive reply in time to snap some up!

Great video, Devin. I grow the Itoh and two "regular" peonies, and they do well in zone 7a, which can a bit tricky for some plants since it gets very cold and moist in winter to very hot and dry in summer - all while being in hard clay soil. I really enjoyed this video: How to plant a peony, transplant a peony rhizome, and a few pro tips about planting depth, sunlight, and such. I'm in zone 8a, and since it can get 110 degrees here during the peak of summer, I'm thinking part/morning sun at most. I was eyeing some Cora Louise Itoh Peonies at a nursery today and they're fairly expensive at $119 each. I wanted to do some homework before committing. I like that they get 3x3 feet and therefore seem safe to plant near one's foundation.

Heyy Devin, so I stumbled across your channel when I was looking for amaryllis care tips a while back. I've learned tons through your videos so I want to thank you! Funny thing is, my mother in law gifted me an Itoh Peony yesterday that she bought through OVC. I searched the recommended video listed on the back of the info book, "Itoh Peonies with Devin Wallien" and when your video came up, I was pleasantly surprised! You mention your family business occasionally in videos, and I had no idea Roberta's was in fact your family business, haha. When I searched for amaryllis care, my first amaryllis was not from Roberta's, but my MIL gifted me one a few weeks later that was from Roberta's, and I just followed the care I originally learned from you before. It's too funny that I did in fact watch the care video, I just didn't know it was connected to Roberta's at the time. That amaryllis was the largest and most beautiful out of the 4 bulbs I ended up having last year. Anyways, sorry for the long comment! I just was super stoked to see your video pop up when I searched for Peony care. I'm sure my MIL will continue to gift me beautiful plants from your business and I'll always check your care videos! Many thanks again 🙏🏼💚

I think you are mistaken as the the orientation of the crown in the bare root plant. The crown is to the left of where you think the crown is. You can see the old woody stems. The new shoots are curve in an abnormal direction due to having sprouted after it was bare rooted and laying on it's side.

i planted my pink itoh peony in a big pot last year because my ground wasn't ready for it. I am thinking to transplant it to the ground this year. Can you advise what's the best time for the transplant? Zone 9. Thank you.
@giardinodialberi87512 жыл бұрын
Scott Arboretum, on the campus of Swarthmore College, Swarthmore PA, had an educational event where they said it is best to plant peonies in the fall, even if your purchase is potted; but I don't know whether that advice applies equally to herbaceous, tree, and intersectional (like Itoh). I might suggest leaving it in the pot until autumn. I tried to confirm this with a quick Google, but was not patient enough to make it a thorough search. Maybe Devin has some input on this. Also, I used to live in Zone 9, and we were told that northern delights like lilacs and peonies are impossible in Zone 9 due to the lack of winter chill hours, which is also important for such fruit as apples.
@plantvibrations2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacqueline. I’ve had success planting peonies in either fall or spring in zone 6b. Zone 9 is right on the cusp for being too warm to initiate flowers. But regardless of when you plant you won’t get flowers this season. So imo, there’s no time like now

@labecquerelle98732 жыл бұрын
@@plantvibrations I LOVE your videos. I caught the tree peony bug, especially the Japanese varieties. There are tree peony nurseries that sell divisions, not grafts of their plants. And tree peonies are so different from itohs or herbaceous because they want to be planted deep. Tree peonies are grafted onto a herbaceous root, because the graft reliably heals. Which is strange, if you think about it, that they don't graft well on a tree peony root. Maybe this was an early prompt for Mr. Itoh, the Japanese gardener who first crossed a lactiflora (one type of herbaceous peony) with a tree peony. Perhaps the grafting success signals that the two families of paeonia are close enough to cross breed. Anyway, as we know that herbaceous peonies want to be planted shallow, and tree peonies, deep, if by chance, one receives a grafted tree peony, make sure you plant it as deep as you can. I have bought some that are marked for planting that leave only one or two buds are above the soil line. That also allow for the tree peony to be a multi-stemmed shrub, giving you more flowers in the long run. Ultimately, I think they prefer to be sited deep as it keeps the roots cool and perhaps somewhat moist over the summers. Tree peony roots grow in the fall and over the winter into early spring, so planting them in the fall give them a chance to establish their roots for the next growing season. If you happen to buy one from spring planting, they do best if watered deeply once a week, especially over the hottest part of summer. Looking forward to seeing your peonies next spring!
@deborahtroeller62372 жыл бұрын
Hi Devin, I'm somewhat new to peonies and planted some of the garden variety last fall with promising results. I understand they usually don't flower the first year so I'm waiting patiently until next Spring when I hope to see some blooms. Since then I've become curious about Itoh peonies and I saw some today at a garden center marked down 50% off from $49.99 to $24.99 which was a huge incentive. The tag said they're yellow which I was looking for anyway but they appeared to be mature plants and quite full and healthy looking. So my dilemma is should I give in to temptation? My understanding is that they flower in late Spring to early Summer but these didn't have any buds or promise of flowering even though it's the end of June. Hope to hear from you soon before I lose my opportunity, thanks and I really enjoyed your video!
@plantvibrations2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely get them! Definitely worth it! I have found that if you plant them in the spring, the following spring they should flower at least one of two flowers. If planted in the fall they will likely not flower the following spring, but two springs later. So plant them asap!
