I never cut mine down either. I simply discovered it by accident. I figured if it’s a cross between herbaceous and tree peony and the stalk stayed and didn’t die back I left it and to my surprise yes I noticed buds. So now I leave. Yes more flowers. Great advice. 💚🇨🇦

Hi Small Garden, I am a master gardener in East Texas and we volunteer out at the A&M Research demonstration garden. We have found that the Itoh is the only peony that one we can get to bloom at A&M. We never cut them down. They have so many blooms and just look beautiful. Yours are so pretty. You really have a green thumb.

Thank you.You never cut down stems in fall?I do cut my but if there closer to the ground flower bud I leave it.Have a great week
@sps7959 Жыл бұрын
The itoh peony shrub gets a nicer form if you cut it down in the fall. I have 52 different itohs in my garden and some of them never make any buds in the old stems.
@smallgarden5682 Жыл бұрын
I do cut just not at the ground level.And all of my Itohs do have buds above the ground.I’m in zone 8a .So our winter is not bad so in the late fall I all ready can see some flower buds for next spring.

Info I have found on peonies online.. Itoh peonies are heavy feeders a 10-10-10 is suggested,, but herbacious dont need fert. unless you want to add some compost around the base, fine.
@smallgarden56823 жыл бұрын
That’s sound good ,but I still will fertilize my peony.I do add some compost but not every year so I don’t want them to be hungry.

Hi! Thanks for sharing the tips. Is Alice Harding a tree or itoh peony. I am confused by it's behaviour. Last year I dead-headed the flowers and pruned it to the ground, leaving only the tips/buds over the ground. Got leafed stalks this summer but no flower buds yet.
@smallgarden56823 жыл бұрын
Hi.So I never before heard before about Alice Harding peony.So I I look at Internet and it showed me all kind of peony.So i don’t know what you have sorry.There is 3 types of peony:Tree peony,Itoh peony and herbaceous peony.This video is only about Itoh peony.It will not work on the other two.It’s hard for me to tell why your peony didn’t bloom.If you have tree peony than it’s because you cut down stalks.Itoh peony should bloom,but there could be a lot of reasons why it’s not so do herbaceous peony.I’m sorry.I love this plants and I know how frustrating it can be to not have blooms and then have to wait a year to see if it will bloom again.

Glad to know your video. I’m currently having an interest in growing peonies but live in zone 8 and unsure if they will be ok here during summer and also unsure if it will be cold enough to induce dormancy. Do you grow other peonies as well or only the heat tolerant itoh?
@smallgarden56823 жыл бұрын
Hi.I do grow some peony .You can see some videos on my channel.I’m growing in North Texas,zone 8a.It’s not that easy to grow peony here but it’s possible.They need sun to grow but they can’t handle mid day heat of summer and humid air of summer is hard in them too.So morning sun 3-5 hours is perfect.It will take some times ,years .In the past I try a lot of times bags peony from Walmart and didn’t succeed at all.It took me 4-5 years till I stop.In the past I did order from different online company’s but they same way wasn’t successful.So 2 years ago I found peonyparadise.com it’s the best ,roots amazing and big .I get roots in the fall plant them and next spring I do have first flower.They are the best big price bigger that Walmart bag .Yes peony in summer loosing there green colors leaves they still leaves but not as much green in them not like Itoh. And in the fall peony terns there leave brown faster than Itoh.What else?Oh early and mid season blooming peony is the best choice become that’s what I had in my practice.Usually in DFW area we have cold snaps in spring and that can damage the buds.Don’t plant deeper than 1.5 inch so that they can have there chilling temperatures in winter.I hope it was helpful.

I cut all of my Itoh peonies to the ground and I had at least 25 blooms each. I have listened to several master gardeners who have said to cut to the ground. Those aren't the same buds as the traditional peonies.

Hi.I’m gathering in zone 8a.So our winter is not cold.So years I see flowers buds in late fall and they above the ground.So I just leave them .

Great video, thank you for the information. And is the peony only on a vase, or does it have access to the ground? I've read _ and tried _ that they don't like being in containers, but yours seems to be doing fine.
@smallgarden56823 жыл бұрын
Thank you.Yes peony love to be in the ground.I plant my in big pot so for 2-3 years it will be ok.Of course I add fertilizer 2-3 times in the year and checking soil so it’s don’t go dry to long.Now in the winter I water every 1.5 weeks.But if I don’t have good roots from beginning then they will not do good in the pot.Peony from Walmart,Homedepo,Lowe’s.I try many times and didn’t have luck with them.But I also in zone 8a and it’s hard to grow them here but I will not stop it’s my favorite flower .I hope it’s helpful.Have a good day.

Did you grow your ITOH in a container?
@smallgarden56823 жыл бұрын
I do have some Itoh in a container.And I do have some in the ground.They will love to be in the ground,but for 2 years they can be in container after that they will lose number of flowers and how big plant gets.So in the end all of my Itoh will be in the ground.

@@smallgarden5682 Thank you, I have one for 3 yrs that never grew big or flowered. I want to take care of it this year.it has sprouts I see now. Do you think I can transplant it as it is into a bigger container?
@smallgarden56823 жыл бұрын
Hi.If it’s in a container now you can replant it in a bigger container.My advise when you pull it out leave some soil that attached to the roots rest of if don’t put back in the pot.Add new potting soil .And water well.I now from my experience that it can be frustrating when your peony don’t bloom.They are some key points that need be checked to make shire that plant have all that it need for blooming.I have one plant that I have 5 years and it didn’t give me a single flower this year it’s last chance.I will do video on that too.I just need to see how it will do this year.Where did you get your peony?And what zone do you garden?
