I can't believe I didn't find this video 6 years ago... I've been struggling with my slapshot for literally 12 years having never learned properly. Tried this technique yesterday and for the first time ever my shot actually looked and sounded like a real clapper. Thank you!!

Thank you for making these videos! I'm new to hockey, and am working on a way to play in my local roller league. I bought my first stick a week ago, and your videos have helped me train at home while waiting on my first pair of skates to come in. (I have ridiculously big feet, so trying to find a pair of skates my size has been a real challenge.) But I have a large, hardwood living room, which has turned into my training grounds for the moment, and I have to say that I really didn't get a feel for what I was doing until I found this channel. Thank you again!

Now that was a okay old school slap shot, where you smack the puck as hard as you can with a stiffest hockey stick you can find. Impressive, if you are 6'11, but I recommend using stick flex for your advantage. Bend - yes bend!!! - your right elbow, and keep it close to your body. If you try to keep both arms straight, you look like windmill and a robot, and fail to get a leverage to fully use your body to flex the stick. Your right foot should be planted while pulling you right hand. If the foot points towards the target and the knee is significantly bent after your shot, you failed to plant your foot.

I am 38 yr old Beer Leaguer and I've played for 21 years now. I'm a righty and my left hip is very tight, sore, and arthritic all the time. As the years have gone by I've noticed it's negative effect on my slap shot. It used to be my best weapon. Now I almost never use it because it just feels F'd up in my hip & lower back when I try and my shot is weak and inaccurate now. I basically only try slappers anymore if it's a glorious one-timer opportunity. Any tips for regaining an effective slapper with a bad front hip. BTW, great videos!! Love the breakdowns.

Try wrist training strengthening, and try a lower flex. And try your techniques without a puck to get your body used to the movement.

Elbows can be bent as long as they straighten out before puck contact. Actually allows for a faster wind-up. Watch Hossa's. Not like he's a Chara or Weber but he scores with that shot a LOT. I use a lot of elbow bend especially in my shooting side arm as I draw the stick back, then I extend through the shot. It's proven to be very effective for me.

Hi Sean, I love your videos. I use them with my son to help both of us learn. One question though, I notice that you seem to bend your arms slightly on your shots, while you instruct to keep them locked until the contact/follow through on the top hand. Also if you watch Shea Weber take a one time in this video at 2:41 his top hand arm is bent at 90 degrees while his stick is still pointing up on the windup. I am not in a position to argue with either you or Shea Weber...I just want to understand? kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGq8q5SHfq90j7c

As a golfer I can't kill my golf-swing instincts and tend to never hit the ice first, so I pick the puck cleanly and it never leaves the ground. Essentially I'm just passing the puck but making more noise doing so. Any ideas how to alleviate this? I've tried staring at the point I want to impact rather than the puck but that doesn't seem to help.

Thanks very much OTgaming 123! Great to hear from you and hope this video really helped you out! No worries brother - you may not see the flex but thats okay you're still "activating" your stick by pressing into it. I use a stiff flex on my stick so I don't see much of the flex from my shots either even in my slow-mo video clips when I play them back. Trust me though, as long as the shot is really loud and your have the proper technique as shown in this video you're utilizing the flex on your stick. We'll be adding more videos directly to our new iTrain Hockey website which will be launched on May 1st.
