Because, in the long run, that doesn't matter. If the planet heats up and the ice caps all melt, the world will slowly flood. Everything will flee inland. We'll become predominantly carnivores because it's too hard to grow food when there is such a high concentration of herbivores around us. Plus, the only reason that industrial mining and farming exist is because people want stuff. Do you enjoy traveling faster than you can walk? Do you enjoy being able to communicate with people across the entire country? Do you enjoy being able to buy your food at the store instead of having to grow it yourself? Do you enjoy having clean water to drink and bathe in? These all require industrial mining and farming. I don't think most people really understand that part of our society. How much their lives would change if we altered certain aspects. Lastly, humans aren't killing the planet. What we've done is miniscule compared to what's already happened on Earth. It's been flooded, frozen, and had the sky blotted out with dirt/debris from an asteroid impact. The ecosystem has always renewed itself. 99.9% of all species that have existed on Earth have gone extinct. We still have millions or billions of different species alive on Earth. No matter what we do, consequences will happen, and the planet will recover. Humans may not be around after the healing process, but that's going to happen eventually.
