I’m from Tanga. Family had a shop called Chumbageni Stores. It was a convenience cum general store. Shop was quite near the Tanga Fire Station (don’t know if it’s still there)and there was a sign writer called Yacoob Anjari across the road from us. Man those were the days

Yaaass!. Today you are at home Chumbageni. I can see my home very near to that Mwembe tree (Mwembeni) and the small local Bus stop. Thanks for sharing. 30 years ago, this section of the city was very clean and vibrant with businesses and lots of people but now looks quiet i don't know why.

Thank you so much for the video. I was born in Tanga but left the town 65 years ago. I do remember a lot at age 74 though. Starting from 5.10, we lived on the left side in the railway quarters. This road was desolate gong through a jungle with some Mzungus living in the west part of the town. The little shops on the left from 7.01 to the roundabout at 13.02 existed then but were small dukas run by local Swahilis. The structures were small mud hut types with tin or Mkuti roof. On the right lived the Hussain Bux family whose son (Amin Kashmiri) was to become an army colonel and a close friend of Nyerere. At the roundabout was the main old police station in a tin-roof structure. Pretty basic and small. On the left turning at the petrol station the 1956 East African Coronation Safari rally cars filled up. At 18.05 on the left were showrooms for big American cars like Plymouth. There were many rich sisal and tea estate owners (Mzungu & Muhindi) who bought huge fin tail American. In 1956 we lined up along here to greet Princess Margaret. The big mango trees were there even then and even earlier. At 24.15, you see a circular building on the roundabout on the right. That was a departmental store belonging to Tame' (Tamay). My family bought a crockery set from there in 1956. At 24.27 you will see what was once Majestic Cinema which showed Muhindi Bollywood films (mainly black and white) in the 1950's. Next to it is Patwas. And next to it in the corner was where as a kid, mum bought me shoes from Bata shop. That's what I remember as a 8-9 year old kid. Best wishes.

Thankyou very much for all your efforts in bringing this video to us very far away. I was very surprised that you were able to take a video of the main Police station in Tanga. A few years ago I tried to do the same from the Petrol station across the road and was apprehended for videoing a government building. It was a bad experience. I had to pay a fine without a receipt. WARNING for others not to video or take pictures of a government building.

@@InspireForTravel Well this was an honest & innocent tourist mistake that i made. The plain clothes Police took a full advantage of my tourist statues and completly fleeced all my pockets and took all the cash i had ( from my memory appox.£50.) It has put me off to visit my birth place and the town i grew up in.
