I expect it in the fall. The A7IV came out Oct. 2021 so I expect the Sony A7V Oct. 2024. 44 MP, AI autofocus, improved IBIS. I will be in.

@@artmaltman I don't know, but that is less likely as that is cost per unit. AI and faster processor etc have a development cost, but very little per-unit cost. I'd guess that the basic-model will feature improvements that don't really cost much to manufacture.

Personal opinions: - I think it will retain the 33mp sensor. For the market it's placed in 33mp is more than enough and very competitive. What needs to change is the readout speed. Rolling shutter needs to be improved and I definitely agree with the 15fps speculation. Should also do 20-25fps electronic, but I wouldn't be shocked if that doesn't happen. - 4K 120 is also a big thing that really should happen. It'll probably be cropped, and at best it will be pixel-binned. Don't see a full width, downsampled image happening with this level of camera. - Price is really a big deal, and I personally think it's either going to retain the $2500 or get bumped to $2600. Why? Because the market is competitive. Nikon is making really great strides and aggressively pricing their bodies, and Panasonic is doing the same. Remember, this is effectively Sony's entry level full frame body. They can't price themselves so high that it won't sell. But you never know! I plan on buying it regardless since I'm ready to upgrade my a7iii :)

100%. If Sony ups prices for the a7V, they risk being undercut by the Z7iii. Nikon is offering formidable specs at better price points than Sony, and E-mount lenses can be adapted to Z bodies. And with Nikon offering affordable telephoto primes, the scales may tip in their favor

There is a lot of room for improvement without cannibalising either the A9III or the A7SIV(if it exists and hasn't been axed in favour of the FX-series) Same sensor for at least two generations. 33Mp at 10FPS doesn't compete with the A9III with its headline act of 24Mp at 120FPS because 24Mp is more than enough for sports photography with 400+mm focal lengths. The A7V doesn't compete with the A7S/FX-series either because the decent 4K will always be cropped and 8K isn't possible because the 33Mp are in a 4:3 aspect ratio and not the standard 16:9. Slightly better performance for the cropped 4K shouldn't necessitate the prohibitively expensive stacked sensor and processor. The A7SIV/FX-3ii will likely feature newer sensor technology that doubles the light-capture performance. (The sensor tech that debuted on a Sony mobile phone).

Sensors usually last through 2 gen of Sony cameras, at least. Govin that even the A6700 has the AI chip, I think that Sony might frt us the A75 pretty soon although ….. A1 might be even more overdue for upgrade?

More mp would suck. They need to fix the shitty rolling shutter first. Especially now that the Z6iii is out and it’s a far faster sensor. I hope Sony uses a stacked or at least a partially stacked sensor so we can get maybe under 15ms rolling shutter

A 40 MP sensor (39,321,600) with 2x2 pixel filtering would be 4K width. Sony could then discard a portion of the height. Seems like a simple way Sony could provide high quality uncropped 4K video. Alternatively, if they designed their circuitry to sub sample from every other vertical and horizontal pixel, and they could read out full res stills at 15 fps, that would give them full frame 60 fps video. Of might require some post filtering to prevent jaggies and would require a new sensor design, which would be expensive.

I personally find 33MP as a great sweet spot. I have no intrest in making my files bigger for added resolution that I cant see in my prints. Not to mention, going from the mark 3 to the 4, they lowered the "compressed raw" color depth from 14bit to 12bit color to accommodate that higher resolution.

Agreed. 33mp is ideal for this camera. If I needed more than that the R series is the way to go. Additionally, I think a 40mp sensor would start to canabalize the R series target market.

All I want is for Sony to give us the a7rv fully articulating screen on the forthcoming a7v, I really hate the flippy floppy screen that only flips to the side , the way I hold my camera especially for video I find it gets in the way . I have a a7riii at present & happy with the original screen that articulates up & down . there has not been a budget full frame camera without the flippy floppy screen since the a7iii & that's not fair as I'd love to upgrade with out having to pay 3.5K for a7rv.

Thanks for the video. Own many Sony cameras, replaced my A7IV with the A7CII but also have an A1 and A7RV. How about staying at 33 MPixels and improving fps and offering no crop for video. Add in improved rear LCD and EVF and two high speed card slots. Basically take the A7RV and put in the smaller 33 MPixel sensor with improvements.

For me, for me, the most important thing that Sony needs to improve, is the internal IBIS in the camera: unfortunately (leaving out the Sony A7RV), the IBIS used in Sony cameras is one of the worst in Full Frame (For example, the IBIS in the Panasonic S5 Mark 2 is significantly better, especially in video), and it should also improve the electronic stabilization, to make it more and more effective (it would be a dream if it even came close to the electronic stabilization we see on an iPhone today)!

It is a myth to me why Sony started with that only since the A7R V. 61MP an so many macro photographers out there shivering there single frames into the next focussing position - meh, no way, very hard. Not applicable anymore in these fast times.

Keep the 33 MP but make it faster. 20 fps with 14 bit RAW. Reduce rolling shutter. Improve EVF and LCD. Add precapture and focus bracketing. Switch to CFExpress Type B. Then take my money. 😉

I want to be able to preset white balance inside custom modes. This is a bigger deal than people think, because you really need to be set to a custom mode to get the most out of the photo / video switch. When you're set to a custom mode you can set your photo settings and your video settings independently. Which then gives you the ability to use the hybrid photo / video switch quickly. But then I can't use my preset white balance.

Thank Stefan for this INFORMATIVE & "SHOT-BY-the-SPEAKER" video. As of today, July 13th, 2024, out of 6 videos regarding to Sony A7V, yours is the BEST. All the other five are fake videos by my standard because they are made of AI voices & their footages are copied and pasted from Sony or other sites. The people who make them don't bother to shoot the videos themselves. Sony, please add 2 things to the A7V. Number one, 32 BIT FLOAT internal audio recording like that of Panasonic LUMIX GH7, please. That will help all the solo shooters a lot. Number two, please add 4K60 with NO CROP, please. We don't need down sampling but we need NO CROP, please.

Nice forecast Stefan but would an a7V the most cost effective upgrade? As an enthusiast and part time pro who shoots with the a7III and a7IV I’m interested in what lies ahead. My normal path to upgrade would be to sell my a7III for roughly $1,000 US and buy an a7V for $3,000 costing me about $2,000 for the video centric upgrade. But another option would be to keep my a73 and a74 which kill it for photography and spend the $2,000 on a third body, the ZV-E1 or fx30 for video. Your thoughts?

I’m hoping they do a partially stacked sensor, considering NIKON have done it recently on their full frame, and Fuji did a fully stacked sensor with one of their APSC cameras, I would love for them to make A7IV so we can film in 6k too. I love the A7IV however I have to go back to my LUMIX cameras when I want 6K. They need to compete with LUMIX in terms of the way they are making and selling their cameras for similar or less pricing.

Same. The rolling shutter on the mark 4 is seriously unusable imo. It’s over 26ms. Meanwhile the Z6iii for around the same price reads at under 10ms because of its partially stacked sensor.

What about focus breathing compensation, precapture, improved menu, ergonomics, card slots? I don’t think Sony can go wrong with this model, even if they just added the new ai af, flip screen and ibis of the a7rv (basically what they did with a7c ii) people would buy it. I wonder if it will be released at the same time as A1 ii and if so, will it share any new features with it, that are still unheard of? Either way the A7 V will end up being a classic, no doubt about it.

the irony is everyone used to hate on sony because they released new cameras so quickly, when canon/nikon were on slow moving dslr tech and sony was using fast improving mirrorless tech. And now, seems like sony has slowed down while canon has been releasing new ones faster than they usually did! I think you're off on the 40mp body, (my uneducated!) guess would be the same 33mp sensor, but gosh I sure hope they can make the readout speed a little faster and I sure hope they put a better res screen on there and the flippy/tilt screen the a7rv/a9iii have. That said, I worry they'll leave it as flippy screen to entice photography-first people to get the very, very expensive a7rv. So maybe at least a higher res screen, sony, please?? I've never held an a9iii and probably never will but it sounds like the ergs are improved with the shutter button so would love to see that. Finally, would love to see an AF that doesn't make you select the type of subject first and just figures it out. Seems like that's possible with a little better processing speed. If it only has those "minor" improvements it better not be too much more expensive, but I'd agree with 3000$ price tag if it ends up having all the things you're thinking.

Great video and I mostly agree with your assessment. Upgrading the LCD and EVF are majorly important to me and I wouldn't mind improved low-light focusing as well. I'm still rockin' 2 A7III bodies and hoping for a fall '24 release but have a feeling it'll be the first half of 2025.

I think if they don't add something really special it would struggle to get the attention against the rest of the lineup. Something cool like in body cellular data transfer (speed up work flow and less sd card reliance). This is 2024 camera companies need to stop thinking it's the naughties. Innovate or get left behind.

I agree with most. I think 15fps with no strings attached is wishful thinking. Maaaybe 15fps lossy compressed w/ silent shutter. Mechanical I’m hoping for 12fps lossy, and maybe finally 10fps full quality. I’d take it! Maybe 16-bit in single shot mode? 33MP seems like plenty on my A7iv. I kinda don’t want more, honestly. Keep the MP, improve the ISO. Spare my hard drive. I’m thinking Sony may agree. Lastly, they need to match the Canon features of focus stacking, maybe auto HDR/AEB merging… just tick those boxes. Minor thing I’d like improved: I want all the speed of a CFE card even if I have an SD in the 2nd slot. The writing and buffering needs to be somewhat independent of the files/cards going to each card slot. If I’m on CFE+RAW in slot 1, let me have all the speed and buffer if slot 2 is only a JPEG backup file.

I think they'll stick to the 33MP sensor, they tend to use them for 2 generations. Also the readout was slow enough that more MP times faster readout is going to be (IMO) very expensive. I'd be happy with a much faster readout, 6 fps is underwhelming. Get it to 10-12 fps, plenty for this range. Outside of that I'd be happy with usability upgrades such as better IBIS, the 'shutter down' sensor protection (in general Sony PLEASE make the sensor less of a dust magnet!), and for sure the flippy-outy hinged screen, and I'd like auto focus stacking. And because I don't video a lot, no crop on video would be perfect (I don't have special video lenses that go wider like the 20-70mm). I've also already set aside way too much money so I am all prepared for it to be £3,000... yikes.

Sony A7IV some big problems; The mechanical shutter is of poor quality (in my case I had to replace it after 20,000 clicks). We also only have the option of a maximum of 10 fps for photos, which is not enough, the resolution and brightness of the screen is not the best, also the evf has the same disadvantages; But the biggest minus is the poor quality of the mechanical shutter, one of the most annoying things is the fact that sony in the last updates (from 2.0) did not change anything in the camera, only gave us some "updates"; I hope they will start to respect customers more and give real updates. As for the sony A7V I hope it will not have any of the above minuses and I hope it will have a decent price (2400 pounds for the Sony A7IV is a price too high).

Sony is still trying to protect the a9ii sales. It would make sense to instead release an apsc stacked sensor camera for around $3-3.5k. Giving it the full 30fps would entice owners to buy Sony glass to max out the frame rate. Wildlife photographers would eat it up

a9 is not stacked sensor line any more, it is global sensor now. I think that there is a chance to have stacked sensor for A7V. I would say that we could have then below lines: A1 - stacked high res A9 - global low res A7 - stacked low/medium res A7R - not-stacked, high res Let's wait and see but I hope to see the the alternative for A1 in stacked sensor department.

The biggest issue i have is the 4k 60 crop, originally wanted the a7 iv for both video and photo, with time i find myself increasingly using it for Video and the crop is starting to be an issue for me. Thought about switching to the a7 siii but with the price difference in mind and the lower pixel count makes its not so good for pictures. Hoping the a7 v will fix that.

I don't think 40MP is needed for this camera. I think Sony will stick to the price of the A7 IV, or $2699 but no reason to price the A7V $500 more, Canon is attacking Sony heavily on price by dropping prices of their cameras. It could be but I think $2699 is the highest. I hope $2499 :-).

Better be. rolling shutter on the mark 4 is seriously unusable imo. It’s over 26ms. Meanwhile the Z6iii for around the same price reads at under 10ms because of its partially stacked sensor.

Increasing the mp would mean the rolling shutter wouldn’t improve much unless they use a stacked sensor and at that price point that’s unlikely. At best we’ll get a partially stacked sensor like the Z6iii

No one talk about the bad AWB make, what about flash? Other brand except for Sony flash, not working good with flash, TTL is not send the correct signal, and the color are not correct! Why no one talk about this? I have to compensate +2+3 to have the correct exposure in TTL. I came from nikon all my life, now I have Sony and this is my only complaint at the moment.

It's possible that Sony might announce this camera just before July 26 due to summer olympics. That is of course if Sony wants to stay ahead of Canon since they are coming out with the all new R5ii next month. If for some reason Sony doesn't make it before July 26 then I would be strongly led to believe that they are putting more into this camera than most people are anticipating. Such as a stacked sensor or even including GPS, which by the way no one has yet to implement this into their cameras! WTF!

I don't understand this with 10 frames per second. That is, if you press the button and count, you get 3...4 frames per second. Nikon D750 has 6 frames per second and actually takes 3 frames. Test, say 1....2 between 1 and 2 and you'll see that you have a few frames, never 120 or 10 or whatever they say, regardless of the card, it's a shooter.

The a7V will have a global shutter, it'll be a standard for full frame hybrid camera offerings by SONY. For APSC, global shutter will be negotiable. If it indeed comes with the global shutter, the price will be higher (+$3500).
