Ages ago, an out-of-state student at the University of Georgia tried to lie his way into paying in-state tuition. He claimed to be from Winder, a short drive from Athens. The lie became evident because of his mispronunciation of the town name. He pronounced it WIN-der. The correct pronunciation is WINE-der.

I know Hahira because my brothers went to the Georgia Sheriffs boy's ranch there back in the 1960s. They taught my brothers how to be self-sufficient, how to garden, how to build things and put responsibility on their shoulders. It was a working ranch and an excellent place for boys to go when their family was going through rough times. They were only there about a year but it left a permanent, positive impact on them. I may not be able to pronounce ALL the names, but i am so blessed to have been born in Georgia...

For what it's worth, you can tell what part of the state somebody's from by the way they say Vidalia. Also, I grew up in Lithonia, they absolutely got that one flat-out wrong! The lady who said "Yes it is!", was right. Granted, there are people who say it that way, but generally they're not from GA. And Senoia (also lived there)! There are about three accepted ways to say Senoia, but the one they have isn't one I've even heard before. Dacula is wrong, too.

No, Dacula is pretty much right. Most people I know put less emphasis on the ‘Da’ part but it is correct.

That's because everywhere else in the world it's pronounce mar-Teen-ez. But I can't talk. I grew up in Amarillo, TX and there's a street named Montague. Like Romeo's last name. Mont-ta-gue. But everyone pronounced it Mon-tayg. And here in Houston there's a major road named Kuykendall. Ain't no "r" in there but everyone calls it Kirkendall.

Not a native Georgian, but my family lives out all over southern Georgia. The family farm is just outside Waynesville and I've got folks all around Waycross, Brunswick, and Valdosta. Spent a lot of summers and Christmases in Georgia. My family also likes to play this game with the kids at our reunions so I knew a good deal of these. Brought up a lot of memories thinking about some of these places, For example, when I first got my license I was driving to the family farm on a foggy night and took a wrong turn. I called my dad when I saw the signs for Ludowici because I grew up hearing the stories of how it was a terrible speed trap especially for anyone with out of state plates.

As a native Floridian, one of my favorite jokes is about the Yankee husband and wife who came down to visit Disney World. They come into Kissimmee and get into an argument on how to pronounce the name. He said it's pronounced KISS-i-me and the wife said, it's Kiss-I-mee. The argument goes on and and gets more heated until they drive into a hamburger place to get lunch. They go up to the counter, still arguing and the man finally said to the boy taking their order, "Young man, my wife and I have been arguing for over an hour about how to pronounce the name of this place. Would you please just say, very slowly, how to pronounce the proper name of this place?" The kid looks startled, leans forward and says, "Bur-ger King".
