Welcome to London guys! Glad you managed most of the hotspots for bottles. The Vintage house is a museum store for us, their pricing in general just makes no sense, especially around scotch whisky. That’s why that Four Roses 2017 will likely be sat there, most of us bypass Vintage House completely. Dram is where the latest BTAC night was held, all sold at RRP via live draw, probably the only place you’ll see that. And on another note, glad you got to meet Kiel at the Buffalo Trace store!

The number of whiskey shops that leave their high-end product in the windows is shocking.
@dominiccummings18932 ай бұрын
A lot of it has to do with who the distributor is. Sazerac, Brown Forman, Beam Suntory, Campari (Wild Turkey) all do their own distribution through subsidiaries which keeps prices lower. Others like Heaven Hill do not, and as a result their products cost way more than they should.

Welcome to my city. Hunting for bourbon in London is a challenge and expensive - BUT we have some great whiskey bars (Glad you got to Dram, it's a newer place and quite wonderful). The good thing about London is that it is so walkable. Many of the big places to buy whiskey aren't where a lot of us purchase our stuff - Gerry's is definitely a favourite and a good small distributor. They will help you if you buy from them a lot and have some good bourbon/rye picks that they do. We can also do some purchases from some of the other whiskey bars who also do picks. (I'm part of the British Bourbon Society and we get info on this stuff all the time). If you ever return, I'm sure we'd be happy to host a bottle share and include you!

In judging price pour, I generally look at secondary pricing/25 and come up with retail bar price per ounce. So a $500 secondary bottle is worth $20/ounce to me. If the bar is selling it for $30 for a 1.5 oz pour, that's reasonable to me. Some bars will take the secondary and triple it and then do the divide by 25 thing.

The tax on spirits over 40% in the UK creates a weird market for watered-down bourbon and an expensive market for proper bourbon. Ireland has to suffer for it because the mass market products end up in both countries. Ireland has 5 million people and the UK is pushing toward 70 million.

I think saying you were over drinking at the point you saw the Daniel Weller means you made the right call not paying that for it. Would it have been worth it to sit there and almost force yourself to drink it just to say you did?
