I'm from Spain and I've never feared in my life calling work to tell them I'm sick (usually I don't wait until I'm fully sick, I tell them right away when I'm starting to feel bad so they can know with a couple of days at least I might be sick in a few days) because here getting sick doesn't mean being fired. There are some flaws depending on your job but if you're sick you're sick, there's no debate to it. Bringing sickness to your job can put the others in danger. Masks help dealing with it for sure but come on, America, why your job would tell you on paper exactly how many days you CAN be sick????? It's nothing people chose, it's not a vacation! What a dystopian place.

National Insurance works in a similar way. You only have to do your Taxes if you are self employed, and it's so easy as well. If you think the government is taking too much you can easily question it or seek independent advice and assessment. This is very rarely nessicerry, for the system to work efficiently people have to trust it and its independently worked out by your employer and checked by the Inland Revenue (Tax Man) if there is an error they just adjust your Tax Allowance Code and take it monthly in small amounts. People talking about "no go zones" in Scandinavia, has zero idea of what they are talking about. Nowhere in Scandinavia is it in any way, shape or form even CLOSE to as bad as the nicest places in New York or Chicago. When we have "visitation zones" in Denmark, or what americans call "no go zones" in Sweden, it's places where the police has been given extra tools, to combat rising gang violence. In a danish visitation zone, police can stop you on the street and ask you to invert your pockets without arresting you, and i imagine it's somewhat the same in Sweden. It's usually areas where police knows that gang violence is on the rise. It's not even partially as bad as anywhere in the US.

Trespassing does exist in the UK but it's usually on property owners to clearly identify such areas (usually via fencing and/or sign posting). Additionally the UK has preserved many walkways which are legally protected, on those, you can't be trespassed no matter what as everybody has a right to use them. These usually are identified by signage (a yellow arrow is a common one). Notably where footpaths cross farm pastures, it's not uncommon to see special gates which are large enough for a human but not necessarily large enough for a cow, or they have a special step set-up that looks weird but makes sense on how to get over, built into the fence itself. If you want to walk, you can walk in the vast majority of Europe.

At that time, I had a rental car provided to me by the company. My first week in the US, apparently I failed to signal a lane change, so the police stopped me. I stopped the car, and as soon as he got to my window, he asked for my documents. Until now, everything is fine. As soon as I asked him, may I ask why you stopped me? He went from 0-100 in a second and ordered me to step out of the car, turn around, and put me in handcuffs???????????????? Still, I didn't know why he pulled me over! Me asking again, please, can you tell me what I did wrong? YOU FAILED TO SIGNAL A LANE CHANGE; YOU ARE BEING DETAINED! Why? STOP RESISTING, OR YOU'RE GOING TO JAIL! STOP RESISTING, OR YOU'RE GOING TO BE TASED! Long story short, for no particular reason, failing to signal a lane change resulted in being put in handcuffs and brought to jail, where I had to spend 4 hours, then they released me. In the Netherlands, I never ended up in handcuffs and/or in jail for any minor traffic violation!

That is NOT fucked up AT ALL... *feel the sarcasm* As a Canadian I cant really fathom how pur two countries, while being so closely related physically and all, are also like... worlds appart culturally, politically, economically, etc. In every aspect, really.

You know, when I was a teenager, America seemed like the promised land to me! Looking back, many many years later...and having become wiser, I can only feel sorry for you all. I'll just stay here in my 'frogland', as the Netherlands is sometimes called (because it is a small country), safe and taking cared for. It's a nice country here with all kinds of nationalities. Not VAT (UK) thats for businesses. PAYE....the taxman takes your money at source before you are paid a net amount. Its all calculated by your employers weekly or monthly. If you pay too much they return it quite quickly. Its so easy. National health payments are made the same way and its a small amount that goes towards the NHS and ultimately your pension.

Oh are you also a stay at home dad? I would love to hear your thoughts about being a parent in the US. I’m in Sweden and I have an 18 month old son and a baby on the way. And when my son was a newborn, one of our cats had to go to the vet and have some teeth removed, which cost a ridiculous amount! It was something like 4500 SEK which is about 430 USD, give or take. Then I got to thinking about how, if it’s this stressful for me to bring my cat to the vet, it must be so incredibly tough to feel that stress over bringing your human child to the doctor or dentist. Also. When I gave birth to our first son, my partner and I got to stay in the hospital for 3 days. We got a double room so he could stay as well. It cost us 500 SEK (less than 50 USD total). And then I saw a woman whose birth was like mine but in the US, and even though they had a good insurance they still had to pay 2000 dollars themselves, like a co-pay or a deductible or something (not sure how that works, but she said the insurance covered like 8000 USD and they still had to pay 2000 USD). I don’t know how regular people have the money to give birth in the US, honestly!

That's one thing that drives me utterly mad: That right now in the US, women's access to abortion for whatever reason - child will be severely handicapped, child won't survive it's first day, rape victim, danger to the mother's life - is severely limited, and some far-right wing-nuts are still not happy and want to go after contraception next. And at the same time that women can be forced to give birth, they and there children - you know, the ones that everybody apparently cares so much about!!! - are on their own. It's a cruel joke.

When he spoke about taxes, he wasn't talking about VAT being included in prices, he's talking about the annual tax return, which is far simpler, and comes prefilled by the tax authority, you just need to quickly go over it, and see if somethings missing, in Denmark this would be things like you got a loan or ended one (interest is deductible, and they might not have the fully correct values), the big one is your commuters deduction, which could be significant, but it's not difficult, and the tax website guides you through each field, noone needs a professional to help you, that's for companies.

I lived in the US as a teenager in California for 5 yrs and again as an adult for another 5 yrs. I had never suffered with anxiety or panic attacks prior to moving there. I ended up on Xanax due to anxiety and severe panic attacks, feeling scared of going out alone etc or to the grocery store at night. Also the healthcare was a massive issue, the quality and cost of groceries is so much more expensive there. I moved back to England with my ex who was American and he loved it here, he used to take long walks in the countryside never fearing anything. He last 100lbs in 4 months. The fear is real in the US. I have my green card but will never move back or even visit. I am too afraid. The girl mentioned the release of trauma, I experienced it myself as the plane's wheels one down and once again felt safe. Something I had taken for granted when I moved to California as an adult in 40's which now I never ever take for granted.

The US has never actually been the best country in the world. It's nothing but propaganda and commercialisation. Until 1968, the country was segregated, colored people were third class citizens, women were oppressed and second class citizens. What you saw, was the media fluffing the shinies over there, while they suppressed the problems. In short - a country where you force your children to stand up every morning and swear allegiance to the flag, you're indoctrinating your youth to be small drones. the ONLY reason why the US is anywhere near the top richest, is the location they're at. They got lucky and built their country ontop of some of the richest gold reserves in the world, they found oil in their deserts, and now they're spending more money on their millitary than the closest 25 allies COMBINED. If that's being the best, or just being the bully - you decide.

The comment about police arrest quotas was of interest to me. When I worked in traffic enforcement there was a strong belief In the community that we had to issue a quota of tickets each month. This was totally untrue, what we was of interest to our supervisors were "contacts'. These could be tickets, written warnings, verbal warnings or assists, such as giving directions, or any other assistance to the public. As I recall there was no set figure required but these contacts gave an indication of our interaction with the public. In my seven years the old quota belief persisted at all levels.

When on the job, in security, working with them is easy, and i have seen so many times how freaking great they are at de-escalation. They know how to talk. They do have "minimal harm" principle, and they have to respect human life to the last moment. Thus, while we have 10th most guns in the world, most in Europe and 300 times less police shootings. I remember one instance, a dude was waving a fucking UZI and cops got in trouble when they shot him in the leg and hit an artery. I also remember us having to have a dog licence otherwise our often times escaping Samoyed dog would be kennelled & killer by the dog catcher. We don’t have dog catchers in the UK, or have to have dog licences. Funny the things that stand out eh? I remember well the prejudice against native peoples there, even at 5/6 I was shocked by how they were treated as second class citizens. (Late ‘60’s so you can imagine). Having lived in multicultural Malaya beforehand helped my understanding in that I think. Though the Malays themselves had had to deal with British colonialism & the influx of many Chinese. Still it’s turned out well in Malaya, it’s truly a place where Indians, Chinese, Indonesians, Malays and more all live happily beside each other. Anyway, glad Canada was mostly a pretty safe place to live too. I hope it still is.
