I'm a bit biased. Often living on campus is cheaper because you aren't paying for utility bills. When I was in college, I was able to get my own dorm room due to my disability and reasonable accommodation through the disability center. I liked being close enough to campus where I never had to worry about having a car. I did not worry about 'cooking' because I didn't like cooking to begin with as I usually ate in the dining halls. Though a major con to living on campus that I found is when you constantly have to move even if you went to school year round. I hated having to haul my stuff in the dorm and then having to take all my stuff out after the school year ended. If I were to go back to school and it was away from home, I'd prefer an apartment because at least I can renew my contract each year without having to move out. There are plenty of apartments where they are close enough within walking distance to campus.
@ItsDanny1235 жыл бұрын
both have pros and cons
@Determination2125 жыл бұрын
@@ItsDanny123 The issue that I had with many of the apartments near campus is they looked like dumps. I was also a bit of a social butterfly so living in the dorm, you always had someone working at the front desk. Plus, the RA is always trying to organize community events. Another thing I thought about that might make apartments a better option is when you get to choose your own furniture. When you sleep at night in your bed, you know that the mattress hasn't been used by other people. When you use the bathroom or shower, it hasn't been used by 50 other people. While most people are clean, there are always the select few that can trash the hallways or have dorm rooms that smell funky. You also knew if you were ever on a male or female floor in the dormitory because the vibes were different. Female floor: Lighter colors were used as bed sheets, many used perfume to make the floor smell nice, and some tended to be more decorative. Male floor: You'd hear people screaming at the TV if there was a touch down. Rooms smelled more like sweat. Colors like bed sheets tended to be darker, rooms seemed to be a bit messier. I personally preferred scattered floors as often people seem to be a bit friendlier with one other when both sexes were together. During the summer of my Junior year, I did get to live in a Suite style apartment which was ran by the university. I liked having more space to spread out, but you hope that your other roommates are pretty clean because you are sharing the common area to include the kitchen, living room, and bathroom together as you don't have a custodian to clean it up and if you are out of soap, toilet paper, or paper towel, you have to go into town and buy it yourself hopefully before you run out. Then who should pay for what, whose food is whose? It got annoying labeling everything. Another upside to not living in the dorms is that many apartments even campus style suites are air conditioned; especially during the hot summer. But living in the dorms, you do get free computer tech support. You don't have to necessarily worry about having a printer because you can go downstairs. If you are hungry or bored, you could go to the basement in your dorm to the vending machine or play pool etc.

I don't prefer dorms because they have such a teenage vibe, I'd prefer to rent a studio apartment near the campus and commute rather than having "dorm rules". But sadly, dorms have more social opportunities than flats off-campus 🤷🏼♀️

Students who live on campus or in off campus apartments typically perceive themselves as more grown up. They expect to foster more adult relationships because they have earned their independence by doing their own laundry, cooking, cleaning, and house-care. Students who live with their parents are often perceived as immature by their peers, and will face discrimination in the job and internship market because their peers will pressure the company not to hire them. The Minneapolis Police Department supports me for President of the United States of America because I lived at my parents house in college, which is one of the most challenging political, economic, sociological, and public safety issues facing the nation today.

Idk where you are, but at my school it's literally double to triple the cost if you stay on campus bc you are also forced to have a meal plan and parking. Literally, my dorm sophomore year cost more a month than my parents pay on their mortgage month to month.

So this is my situation: I’m a senior in highschool and I’m preparing for college. My mom told me she’s starting to look into condos I can live in by myself. I value the privacy I will have; however, I am worried about the aspect of making friends. How often as a freshman were you invited to other people’s dorms? I’m thinking that I could possibly make my friends in class and get invited to hangout in their dorms and make friends through that

Why does everyone think that living off campus hinders you from having a good social experience at college? So what if you don't live with other students? There's plenty of time you can spend after classes meeting new people and spending quality time with them. Having a good social life isn't about where you live, it's about how you spend your time and people have made close friendships without livng with their friends, why should that be any different for college? The time you spend meeting and becoming close with the people inside and near your dorm is the same time I could be spending developing close relationships with people hanging out somewhere else on campus. The only difference is you don't get to spend time with a roommate and you have to drive every day but by no means is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Your social life is only as good as you make it, don't blame it on where you live. That's just cowardly.
@SurvivorQT Жыл бұрын
Well with dorming on campus, a social life is “built in” , way better chances of building a network
@ashupashu5559 Жыл бұрын
@@SurvivorQT There is no such thing as a "built in" social life. Your social life is obviously dictated by your surroundings to a degree but its mostly dictated by you. Even if you live on campus you can keep your mouth shut the whole time, never talk to your roommate, never make any friends, although I would agree its less likely. But even if I don't live on campus I can have an equally good social life because I'm going to that campus every day and seeing people. I'm not going to let something as silly as where I live dictate my social life.

I’m contemplating dorming in order to have the “college experience” knowing damn well the cost of attendance with dorming makes it too much money. I’m not even in college yet. After reading a bunch of stories on how dorming changes the game in terms of social life, especially freshman year, I contemplated and even stressed about decisions in terms of commuting vs dorming. However, after reading your comment and getting other opinions, I do realize that college and social life is what you make it to be. Joining clubs and events, and doing other things can definitely help. I heard however that it’s harder to make friends a mostly commuter schools but people make it sound impossible so I’m still sort of stuck on that 😅.
