Valid points made about depth and texture, but here are a couple additional considerations and suggestions: If someone is around everyday to replenish the water that shallow design works fine. However, such a small volume will evaporate quickly. People who are away from home days at a time might want to carve their birdbath with a bottom that slopes gradually to a deeper end like a typical municipal swimming pool. Such a design will always have an area of shallow water that will appeal to the birds while keeping water available longer without attendance. If made to hold a large volume of water, say several gallons, drilling a drain passage through the stone at the deep end will facilitate cleaning without the need to bail the dirtied water (birdbaths should be cleaned regularly to prevent concentration of bacteria and other pathogens). Regularly attracting birds and small mammals (squirrels, chipmunks and such will likely use the bath as a watering point if there is not another convenient source in the area) to a site will make them more vulnerable to predators. It's a good idea to keep that in mind when deciding where to site a birdbath or feeder. I'm no ornithologist, so there might be better choices, but I actually placed a few smaller baths on the margin and slightly into woodland and brush habitat behind my house that I figured would provide the birds escapement cover. I also placed wire enclosures with large grid openings that posed no barrier to small birds' passage but would make it more difficult for predators such as coyotes, raccoons and cats to catch the birds unaware.

I made a 'small' bridge for my mom for Mother's Day almost 35 years ago. I thought about wood burning the date and my initials into it, but figured that would be too egotistical, plus... 'it won't last THAT long'... Nearly 35 years later it's still standing, house has had multiple owners since my mom moved (she cried because it was too big to take), has weathered a nasty tornado and a cottonwood tree falling on it. I drive past every once in a while to see if it's still there, and sure enough, it's still standing. I should've done the wood burning etching...
