While working in Manhattan, ive taken the tunnel many times. But as a native New Yorker, things like this are taken for granted. Looking forward to this video.

One time when I was a kid, coming home from visiting family in North Jersey (we lived in Brooklyn at the time) my dad suddenly posed what to me was then a massive question - "so which tunnel do you want to take?" good god the power of choice was overwhelming. It was fairly late at night and he wasn't worried about traffic, otherwise he would have picked what he thought was less congested. I think I picked Lincoln, and I believe he ended up frustrated when there was still somehow more traffic than we bargained for and I got a "should've went through the Holland tunnel..." for it lol.

In the 1960s we used to use the Holland Tunnel a lot. As part of the route from our home in New Jersey to Family in Brooklyn. By the mid-60s the Verrazzano-Narrows bridge was completed and we no longer used the tunnel. It was a very weird experience to a little boy to go through the tunnel and I always wondered what the phone booth boxes were for. Until my Father explained that they used to have policemen manning them in case of trouble.

The Holland Tunnel has four lanes for traffic in two directions and 9 feeder lanes in NJ only. The East River subway tunnel was for the BMT line (Brooklyn Manhattan Transit) not BTM. A video about the river traffic it replaced would be very interesting. My father told me about ferries for horse drawn wagons around WW1 before automobiles and fixed crossings were built on the Hudson, even a ferry at 125th St. for non rail carriage. All freight train traffic from the west ended in Jersey City or Hoboken and had to take the water ferries to NYC. There were trains running up and down 12th Avenue servicing the rail cars until the early 1970s. Train train traffic from the north could directly enter Manhattan via the Bronx so the Holland Tunnel connected vehicles in NY with the rest of the country, not only NJ.

Grew up in the area, when I was older I heard some girls telling a story about getting lost in Manhattan driving their car and accidentally getting the lanes to access the Holland Tunnel. When they realized their error it was too late to turn out and they openly mused "Where does this tunnel go?" And the other replied, "Holland?" And they were surprised (like this was news) when they exited the tunnel they were greeted with a sign that said "Welcome to New Jersey". 🙄

In 23yrs trucking I've been through both of those tunnels more times than I can count. I can remember a couple times running through those tunnels with the flaps of my exhaust stacks rubbing the ceiling like a cable car, and you didn't accelerate hard with a medium to light load, the torque could push the high trailers into the ceiling, they finally restricted the height after a couple years in the early 2000's.

I had a good friend in San Francisco that used to live in NYC. He had before his demise in 2005 a black book with gold leafing given to him by the City of New York, called Mr. First and Last. One of the places is the Holland Tunnel, (The other tunnel was the Lincoln tunnel) where he wound up sleeping at the wheel of his car on a pillow as to be in both tunnels the official FIRST user of these two tunnels of course on two different dates. He passed away George Edward Horn in 2005.

I remember the first time I went though the Holland tunnel. I grew up in New Jersey and the first 50 times we went into NYC we went through the Lincoln tunnel. So the Lincoln, from the NJ side, has this enormous, grandiose circle feeding the tunnel. Whereas the Holland emerges from under the river in NYC in a very demure, kind of "in the middle of the block" type of affair. You could drive by it and miss it.

The history of Manhattan’s river crossings are always super interesting. They always seem to be marvels of engineering of their times. This isn’t very engineering-centric, but I find it super interesting/coincidentic that this tunnel on the south end of Manhattan (old New Amsterdam 😉) is named “Holland”. Tbh, this is the first I’ve learned it wasn’t actually directly named after NYC’s Dutch past. I always assumed it was named for lower Manhattan’s past, but I’m glad to learn the great civil engineer Clifford Holland existed and was appropriately honored
