I regularly do 700 mile trips (once or twice a month). My trick is also to hook up behind artic lorries being very careful not to be a pest to other HGV drivers. When the weather is between 10-20DegC, I get a touch over 70mpg in my 2013 Ford Focus 1.6 diesel.

Amazing result for the 3.6. The secret is to keep the speed down as the L322 shape is not very aerodynamic. As soon as you start nudging 70 it really drops off fast and if you can keep it 60-65 they will reward you with this kind of distance. In almost any other car going that speed feels like you are wasting time but in an L322 it’s time we’ll spent.

True also one thing people forget that Diesel cars can still continue to drive for an additional couple extra miles due to diesel engines burning the fuel and running on fumes unlike petrol engines that straight up run from the fuel itself not the fumes from the get go

I used to have a 3.6 one of these. A truly wonderful car. Money no object and only allowed one car for the rest of my life, it would be a Range Rover. It’s harmed by the fuel consumption and tax cost. Servicing doesn’t need to be too expensive if you can DIY the basics and have a good independent specialist. Generally the car did about 26mpg over the ten years with the car but I did an economy run a few times and got her to 40mpg. Tricks were as Joel suggested, minimal acceleration so the turbos don’t spool up, anticipation, observation and using manual gear mode so you can select a high gear ASAP and lock it in.

We have had a 2007 tdv8 for the past 65,000 miles , it’s pulled our diggers weekly. Towed artics stuck in the snow up steep hills . Taken us up and down the uk on business including Plymouth to Sheffield once a month for a year (On a single tank) it’s allowed us to work in rural locations with our fencing gear and trailer in tow and we donated it for use during covid to care in the community staff to use how ever they needed . I can honestly say that the l322 tdv8 is unbeatable! From trips to ikea to mud plugging it’s the only car that you can work to the bone and then take out to a posh restaurant for dinner 👌 hats off to you Joel excellent engaging content

hi joel, I work on land rovers/range rovers daily, so maybe this is why you was in my recommended videos, I could waffle on for hours about the advantages and dis-advantages of the various models, And don't even mention the Ingenium engines..... anyway, point I'm trying to make is, indeed the L322 , is by far the best Range rover ever built. Other than the regular maintenance, the occasional suspension pump, and odd pair of turbos, the 3.6 engine is near enough bomb proof. Im in my 27th year as a vehicle tech, I currently rebuild at least 3 engines a month, but never had to do the 3.6. plenty of l405 3ltrs, 4.4ltrs, 2ltr ingeniums, odd belt fail, oil pump fails on the 2.7. and we currently have an SVR in with failed timing, and valve to piston damage on the flagship 5ltr. sorry for waffling, you've earned a new subscriber, keep up the good content.

All this drama going to Scotland and back in a modern car is bordering ridiculous. I’ve travelled from Essex to Inverness at least 100 times over many years in (at the time of journeys) , old Nissan Primera, Montego, Ford Granada Scorpio, Rover 75, Escort mk3 to name a few. All made it no problem. Only car I drove that was totally knackered when returned was a brand new hired Vauxhall Cavalier. It sounded like a bag of nails when back in sunny Essex.

Great story telling, narration, editing, photography and production. Excellent video! You wouldn’t make a long haul pilot though (we frequently have to be up nearly all night and still land in the morning). Keep the context coming!

Thanks Graham, funnily enough I hope to one day be a long haul pilot - doing modular flight training currently! I’ll work on my stamina… Thanks for watching

Great video Joel, really enjoyable. If you’d timed it differently you could have had a celebratory pint when you got back at The Hop Pole opposite BP, I think you earned it!

Considering their reputation for reliability and durability it's a celebration anytime they complete a journey. Whether it is to the shops and back or across the country and back.

In all honesty they're not that bad. The 2010+ 4.4 TDV8 rarely has an issue.

@@warrengeew The occasional reliable one is a unicorn and doesn't represent the ownership experiences of a overwhelming majority of owners. Owner's forums, reliability surveys, surveys of aftermarket warranty companies etc. all show them to be some of, if not the most, problematic vehicles on the road. Even in the UK they are #31 out of #31 marques surveyed in a recent survey. Their reputation was not earned by the company producing vehicles with stellar reliability and durability year after year.

@Hello Everyone Are you actually comparing their reliability/durability to something like a Lexus? Maintenance cannot overcome bad design. Almost ALL their competition are more reliable.

Good stuff. Little, spontaneous road trips are great fun. I popped down to Lands End, from Manchester, with my 7yo recently. A great 750 mile, 30 hour adventure.

Wow, that's some achievement Joel. I really enjoyed the video. I would never have believed that a Range Rover could achieve that fuel consumption. Thanks for the video, and pleased that it didn't let you down. well done.

Hi M8. 2nd of June 2021, (my second day of ownership of my L322 3.6 TDV8 Vogue [lots factory fitted extras]) I drove Berwick upon Tweed to Liverpool Anfield and back in one day to attend a funeral. Obviously not the miles you have just done, BUT, I am closer to 70 years old than 60. At the end of the day, I could have had a cup of tea and set off to do it again. My hips legs and back, were better than when I set off. As for MPG. I now know how to set the screen to show me my live MPG and I can regularly get better than 36 MPG. Best car in the world, you betcha. Oh and 369 days without a mechanical fault.

Hi Joel.. good video. Just completed 2200 miles road around Scotland and Outer Hebrides in my G wagon V6 diesel fully loaded with luggage. Ye it is beautiful and gets better the further north you go. I achieved 26mpg over all but head winds and stationary traffic kill my fuel consumption. Very nearly bought an L322 but opted G Wagen. Seeing this video I may buy a L322 aswell! I guess you were lucky with motorway tail backs and headwinds……??? Big fan of Harry Clarkson and High Peak videos.
