HOW I GOT MY MOTORBIKE LICENSE AFTER NEVER RIDING A MOTORBIKE!

So after never riding a bike in my life, I decided to go ahead and get my full motorbike license meaning I can ride any bike I want.. how hard was it? how much did it cost? did I pass first time?
Come along on the journey with me from start to finish, from never riding a bike to having a full A license! We go through a CBT, Theory Test, Mod 1 and Mod 1, this is how you get a full bike license in the UK, also known as a direct access.
How you enjoy the content!

I have been riding for 53 years now and the one thing I have learned and would pass on to any new rider is. "When you get on your bike think that you are invisible to other road users" They will kill you and say "I didn't see him"

I was knocked off my bike a couple of years ago by a careless car driver. I was quite seriously injured with several broken bones. It was near a well known bikers spot so many bikers rode past while I waited for an ambulance. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM stopped to see if I was OK. It really helped keep my spirits up. It's like a family.

Thank you. I'm 70 and tomorrow I do my CBT closely followed like yourself by a Direct Access course. Sod the cost, whats the point when you're retired in sitting in a high backed chair listening to Classic FM. I want to meet my maker while hurtling down a German Autobahn or while driving down to the sunshine in the South of France. This video made me feel really good about it all, you were so upbeat and positive. People tell me that I'm not young anymore and its too dangerous. Sod them. Thank you again.

Did the CBT. No problems but I think its best to get fit if you are to follow up with a DAS course. I had serious cramp halfway through and the following day I could hardly walk. It doesn't help if you have heart failure and other co-morbidities. Next is DAS after I get a fitter, should take a few weeks.. My goal is to hurtle down to South of France, or Spain, or Germany. And if I don't make the return journey I'll be happy.

Enjoyed that pal, I’ve had my full license nearly 2 years now and I’m 39 this year. Everyone said I was stupid for doing it late but you’re never too old! I’ve almost lost interest in cars now, I’ve got a 500bhp S4 that I thought was fast, until I got my Tuono 1100 V4 factory 😬 Once your on a big superbike it’s like nothing you’ll have ever experienced on 4 wheels!

Late?, too old?, 39? hahaha i got my licence at 61, and i used to hear the word's 'mid life crisis' a lot, so i said i hope im only half way through my life, but i've always been adventurous and open to new things, and now when m8's and family are still doing what they have always done, i'm off touring or 200mile day trips. i upgraded to a 750 hornet, like u say you have to experience it yourself to know. Funny thing with the insurance. I rode a 125cc scooter for two years on my CBT. Then I did my A. I didn't actually consider riding a big bike. I just didn't see the point of doing my A1, so I did my A. The moment plans changed was when I started practicing for the hazard avoidance. The moment I opened the throttle on the ER6, I was hooked. There is nothing like that feeling. So I passed my A and bought an 89 GPX750R. I thought the insurance would cost a fortune. I was advised to go for multi bike insurance as I still use the scooter as my commuter. Stuck the GPX on third party, my insurance got cheaper! It was cheaper to insure two than one. 🤷

Thankfully, that's healed now after a few years, but I need to start all over again. Although I've just started my adi tests to become a driving instructor, and after being made redundant, I think I'll complete my direct access soon. After having some free time.. Had my full bike licence since 17, none of the many tests back when I did mine just a cbt that lasted 2 years and let you ride a 125 then you took your full test any time within the 2 years the cbt covered, 2 tests (1 test really as no one failed the cbt) and you could jump on any cc bike you wanted. Had my licence too many years too remember now (nearly 40 yrs) I can understand the safety reasons but its way too many tests now to get a full unlimited cc licence, if I had to pass all the different tests I think it would put me off not to mention the cost. Happy biking Lee welcome to the thrill of biking and the car drivers that dont see you ,stay safe and have fun mate

Good to see you've come over to the 2 wheel side pal. Once you experience genuinely fast bikes & the little money you spend to get sub 4secs acceleration. A car can't come close to that in £ for performance. Easist way to describe it. Car is about getting to where-ever you want to go, experience whatever it is, then go home. Motorcycles are about the ride to the spot & the ride back. The actual spot itself isn't of the biggest importance. Sure theres some nice places like squires, lotherton hall etc. But they are all about the local roads around that spot.

Its nice and simple really and then did my driving test last year and had a biker as my car tester so I think he went easy on me. I've stick with my trusty 125 until this week when I've gone and got a VFR1200. Glad to see you feel the biker community is more inclusive than the car guys because its something we don't talk about and most people don't realise until they get a bike 125's or big boy bikes you become part of a family (except maybe a few Harley and BMW riders that think there better than you still).

I'm from Ireland so our process is slightly different but a lot of similarities. I did the whole process starting in 2019. My bike licence was something I always wanted to do so just went and done it. Our training is mandatory and called IBT. It is very expensive at €600 or more depending on the instructor you go with they can generally charge whatever they like. It is a two day course, so all the slow speed stuff and classroom stuff on day one and a full day riding on the road on day 2 which is a lot of fun. Once we get the IBT certificate a 2 year timer begins to tick and if we don't pass our full test within the 2 year period the IBT has to be repeated at full price. Our theory test is 40 questions and you need 35 correct to pass. I got 40/40. I think it is stupid that if you get any of the theory questions wrong they don't tell you which ones, how does that make sense and how can anyone learn from that? Pass my full test in june 21 so have my full licence 3 years at this stage. Still riding my first bike which is an SV650 and I love it. A very easy bike to ride and the V-twin engine sounds great.

No matter how safe you are you can't plan for negligence of others. This is really interesting as an Irishman. I had assumed we had the same system for IBT (Thats what we call the CBT) but its not the same at all. We have to first do a theory test, regardless of A1, A2 or A. Then you do the IBT which is a 3 day procedure. Day 1 is classroom based, Day 2 is slow maneuvers and learning how to stop and start, gears, etc, Day 3 is where you go out on the road and do all that for about 6 hours. After the IBT, you get a cert and then you can ride around on what your license permits (obviously). Then whenever you feel ready, you book your practical test and hope for the best. We also have the progressive access but it's basically like the IBT except its only one day and essentially impossible to fail, and then you get your new license. However, you can only use the progressive once. For example, if you started and passed on A1, then you can progressive access to A2. But after that, you have to do the entire IBT process and practical test if you want to go up to the full A. I started on A2 soI thankfully will be able to get to A without having to do another test.

Hey Lee, we did this about the same time! Did mine in Northampton after putting it off for 25 years! I passed too, did the CBT and DAS with Karmenz in Northampton and likewise they were nothing but helpful and informative, so if anyone is in my area, they are a great place to go. Am enjoying getting out and about, I went the Cruiser route with a 20 year old XVS-650. My partner was eager to jump on the back so we have been doing some very short trips with her on the back too, slowly building up ready to do something longer in the summer 😀 Look forward to seeing you out and about 😀

Always been a car guy. But always wanted to get a bike. Two years ago passed my bike test. Got a street triple r as my 1st bike then added a zzr1400 and a gsxr 750 after a year. Now selling most of my cars only do track days on the bike. I sure you will not stop at one bike. Looking forward to more bike content.

Awesome mate - it doesn’t stop there, keep riding gaining more experience and look at an advance course (it may help insurance come down). I would love to watch you do the advance riding course even if it’s just to see what you think. Ride say and rubber side down.

after a lifetime cycling and 42 years driving a car with just occasional motorbike rental on holidays, i decided at 60 to go for a full bike licence. I took a year to learn as properly as i could on my 125 covering 10k miles (no commuting) before doing my DAS, and passing the test felt fantastic. as much as i ride for the pleasure of it and ain't too much of a speedster, i could have stuck with the 125, but i decided to buy a big boys bike, as it gives that added dimension when you want it. Overall with fee's & lessons it cost me about £1100 to pass, as i failed my mod1 first time and took extra lessons as well, but it's money really well spent. you seemed to pretty much sail through it all, WD, but i found that even with all my road experience, i didn't know what i didn't know about motorcycling, and taking the extra time was right for me. You don't "fail" the CBT because its not a test. However if you don't show the (very) basic level of competence to satisfy the instructor that you would be safe on the road unaccompanied, you wont be issued with the CBT certificate and you will be asked to undergo further training. So essentially at that point, you've failed and need to redo it.

It's a bit more straight forward in New Zealand. If you have your full car license, you can ride a 50cc scooter. Above that you need a bike license. With a full car license you pass a simple handling skills test and you can ride any bike under 650cc. After two years and a final test, you can ride any bike you want. Insurance is much cheaper here too because there is far less car/bike theft. You are much more likely to crash than have your vehicle stolen here so that reduces the premiums.
