Regarding behind your nether portal. Have you considered a wall of red glass, with a few blocks behind that dug out and landscaped to look like the nether with fire and a lava fall etc? It may give the impression of being able to see through the portal into the nether itself.

Villagers don't like to walk on rails - so much so that you can trap a villager by surrounding them with rails. I think that's why they get dropped off onto the block with the tripwire.

If you put a mob head on a zombie, it won't burn in the sun but it still does protect the zombie, oddly enough.
