What a truly magnificent dog! If only the puppy class had suggested something like that harness things would have been so different. Wonderful to see how happy and relaxed the lady was with the dog, especially after being injured so badly before which would knock anyone's confidence.

A lurchers is a cross between a sighthound and another breed, usually a herding dog or terrier. Which means they have both the speed of a sighthound and the energy level of the other parent. Not easy dogs to work with, compared with the more laid-back ex-racing greyhounds.

I had 6 lurchers all at one time never had a problem with any of them,. Excellent recall ,all ran free and played with each other and other dogs. Do live in a place with a lot of excellent countryside with plenty of free space My childhood family also had multiple dogs ,so guess just use to being a benign dictator. during lock down a lot of folks got dogs and have no clue on what a dog needs . Dogs need a confident yet benign leader If you are not confident ,the poor dog feels it needs to be the leader ,which causes the dog a lot of anxiety. They naturally recognise confidence and are only too happy to designate the confident one as trustworthy ,who look after their best interests

@@Niki-xr6cw as long as you say leader and not alpha it is finde by me. I don't know about lurchers but sighthounds are very easy dogs. If you aren't able to meet a sighthounds needs, you probably are better off without a dog bc it won't get much easier.

Totally, from experience you are right, for my pup I used to use a retractable leash for training recall but soon I learnt I have to walk her on the regular leash to where we needed to go and then switch to the retractable one for training

To the rest of us, it looks like magic, but Victoria will tell you it is common sense once you understand how your dog's mind works! I highly, highly recommend her books, especially "The Secret language of Dogs", I have spent years studying canine behaviour, but this book still helped me see things in a new light. Her guidance may be common sense, but Victoria herself is definitely magic!!

Just an observation. My dog will pull at the beginning of a walk on our way to the field, but once she gets to run and get out some energy, she walks beautifully on the lead, which seems to be what is happening here. Not saying Victoria is wrong, and getting out some excess energy is definitely a good way to train, but could that be part of the "magic"?

Nah, that may be true in most dogs case but definitely not with a young healthy Lurcher. I have to take my Lurchers out every morning for minimum 2 hours, minimum distance 10miles, off lead running (i usually ride a bicycle) otherwise they have to much energy throughout the day (and still that isn't always enough). 10 minute zoomies around a field uses as much energy for a Lurcher as walking up a flight or 2 of stairs would for you (assuming and hoping you are healthy that is). Lurchers... They're a strange yet truly wonderful dog.

the only thing that happened was a front clip harness was used...thats the only reason the dog was walking well...

What she does works. Read a few publications behavioral science in dogs. It's not just the front clip they changed, that's just for better handling and not being pulled over. The behavior (What but also why?), expectation, and reinforcement is key.

Yes absolutely. Dogs anticipate exercise. Try switching up your walks; walk to the park, do some quick training games outside and go home. Mix it up randomly with direction changes, practice road sits, practice some threshold boundaries, figure 8s, sit-stops, etc so it removes the expectation of the park = fun so pulling = fun.

OOOOOF seeing any sighthound on a retractable lead causes me to shudder. BEAUTIFUL lurcher tho, i'd bet money on an irish wolfhound or scottish deerhound with a saluki cross. no wonder he's so strong and so excitable!

Oh, we used to have Irish Wolfhounds and this boy looked like a little mini-wolfhound! As we got older, we got smaller dogs, but I miss my Wolfhounds and I miss seeing them doing zoomies around the yard. Watching an Irish Wolfhound run flat out is something to see!

What a beautiful Lurcher, I'm guessing some Afghan Hound in there for the sight judging its appearance. Only came here for the Lurcher in the thumbnail lol. Lurchers are fantastic dogs but because of their HIGH energy, HIGH independence and VERY HIGH prey drive (They are working dogs after all) they need a person that knows what they are doing unless dog is already trained. And now I am going to go cuddle up with my 2 Lurchers after a nice 5am 10mile walk :D

Seems like he might have some Poodle in his DNA, he has the long Poodle mix ears. I’ve never been around a Lurcher before, but I’ve seen pictures of them. Most of them appear to have a shorter and wirey coat as opposed to a long and fluffy one. This one looks like a Greyhound and Poodle cross. He even barks like a large Poodle cross.

If he has Wheaten Terrier in his breeding it would account for the type of coat he has. Also possible that the sighthound in his breeding is Saluki, which would also account for his coat and ears.🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ll do this tomorrow for my dog. I cannot seem to deplete his energy, his jumps is mixed with a little bit of a bite , ( it’s like he jumps at you jumps multiple times like a kangaroo, while slightly nipping ,) he grazed my arm one time with his teeth because of that. And when we walk, it’s like he’s walking me. I’m gonna train that big boy tomorrow.

I wrote it on Facebook too. A couple of days ago, I watched a woman hitting her dog because she was sniffing around and not walking by her side. I thought Victoria would be needed because that poor dog will become aggressive and anxious. By what I'm learning watching these videos, dog seemed to be a big puppy, probably a teen, and not that full of energy but needed of stimulation and happy because she was going out. I found the problem in the woman, she seemed inflexible pulling the leash all the time and yelling "be by my side". And this video shows it's not that difficult to teach a dog how to walk in a leash... I feel pity for that poor dog and the hard no dog life she may be living.

What we've learned was just stop moving, or even walk backwards if the dog pulls. He wants to go a certain direction, and pulls that way, and if you stop (and do that consistantly for a long time, think months, it took our dog a few months to stop pulling, and he still sometimes forgets when he's very excited) he will stop pulling because it doesn't get him to where he wants to go. Ideally he should look back to you, or even walk back towards you, but for our dog, we've settled on a relaxed lead. So long as the lead is hanging rather that pulled tight I'm fine with it. It depends on the type of dog and character, our goal was a relaxed walk, not a dog who walks by our heel, so we're fine with where our dog is at. :)

I also feel like it is not an efficient eay to teach the dog as it really does take months and makes the dog work out what we want through frustration. Even if I give them a treat at the end, it still used to always cause frustration for both me and the dog.

@@jaanaenkerro445 our dog picked up what we wanted very quickly it was just that any time he got excited he forgot. It will always, always, take months to really ingrain certain behaviour. The reward for not pulling is walking on, no need for treats. As soon as the line is relaxed again you start walking again, so you walk backwards for a bit until he comes to you, and you immediately walk forwards again. And of course there's no punishment. There is zero need for punishment, he's not doing anything bad, he needs to learn to control himself. He gets to where he wants to go, but only if he doesn't pull, it's a self control issue, not a bad behaviour issue. And you can't teach self control with punishment, because that means you control the dog's behaviour, rather than the dog himself having control over his own behaviour. And of course teaching self control takes months, self control is hard. But it means the dog learns to control his own behaviour. We taught him not to grab food immediately when it's in front of him by not giving it to him if he rushes up to it and puts his face in the bowl. He gets his food if he waits calmly. The 'reward' is his food, the 'punishment' is he has to wait so long as he tries to get into the bowl before it sits on the ground. That is also self control rather than us controlling our dog. He now can calmly wait for food. He learned that being busy and jumping or barking or rushing to the bowl just didn't get him what he wanted, and he learned that as soon as he backed off I lowered the bowl again. The goal is not a dog who is only obedient when you're there to keep him in line, the goal is a calm dog who can control his own urges.

Refusing to discipline your dog by even just withholding something is just making it harder for the dog to understand what you actually want. Even reward based training still uses forms of discipline becauee it's pretty much a necessity

the deal with this video is that those types of harnesses are really bad for a dog's gait and no it does not solve anything, the dog probably complies because the trainer is in a controlled environment without any distractions, same type of pulling will persist on the way back home. and no, you cannot keep using that type of harness forever, and yes heel training takes forever.

this one drill won't 'fix' the problem. I know this is a tv show and done for entertainment but I think people think that doing this in a park once with a few sharp turns will make their dog heel in any situation. try bringing other dogs and other distractions into the mix. I always say when teaching a new behaviour duration and distraction will proof the behaviour and this isn't something that can be done in a days work.

@@CleverClover2023 I don’t honestly need to… she has always contradicted herself especially calling herself positive only! I love using positive reinforcement but I don’t see her working with Rottweilers, GSD and malinois. You need to find motivation by food, toys and praise to increase the behaviour you WANT and positive punishment for behaviours you DON’T want. This training method has such a higher success rate and can actually broaden a dogs life. The only thing purely positive seems to increase is the practice of avoidance on walks, lack of guidance and direction from handlers and an increase in death of dogs from livestock attacks in wales where they have banned the use of e collars… going off on a tangent but I wish they choose more credible and experienced behaviourists for these shows. Will atherton, Micheal Ellis etc.

If it was that easy then every dog would be perfectly trained after this "one simple trick". It's smoke and mirrors, clever editing and wishful thinking. It takes months, if not years of hard work to train a dog. If you don't want to put the effort in, don't get a dog.
