Tom, longtime viewer here, (dating all the way back to the before PowerPC Promise, I'm the guy who sent you those two X800 XTs) and I have to say that this video is an absolute masterpiece. I love the new editing style. Your channel has been underrated for years and you deserve so much for recognition for your work. Keep it up Tom, can't wait for the next journey you take us all on!

Really fun video, I enjoy the normal format, but was nice to mix it up a little. Fun fact with the 2010 mini is it's also the last one to officially support snow leopard and by extension the last one to support front row without any hacks or workarounds which combined with the optical drive (that could further be upgraded to a blue ray drive) made it the best choice for a tv connected mac mini for a good many years.
@ItsMyNaturalColourАй бұрын
Ahhh of course! That's brilliant. Thanks for mentioning this, I'll make sure to bring this up in the next video covering this little guy.

Haha was wondering if anyone would spot this!! I don't think I did, no. However, I'm holding on to the fact that the DVD did not eject and the keyboard did not remain active on the existing board, just to comfort myself a little when I start to question the logic board purchase 🤣

Love your videos, always happy to see another on a Friday! Have to say though, once you replace the logic board, is it the same Mac Mini?
@ItsMyNaturalColourАй бұрын
Thanks so much! 🙏 I guess not, as the logic board is the entire brain of the machine... but you could argue that the logic board is fairly useless without all the other bits such as; I/O panel, cooler, airport card, antennas, speaker, IR LED board, memory, drives, power supply, case... and so on. As it's proprietary, without the rest of the machine, despite being the brains of the operation, it's fairly dumb!

Awesome! The 2010 is a very cool model, there’s enough space for an optical drive alongside everything else! It’s a great case design, at least the models after this one used the space efficiently for more drive storage. Great to see this one in action, especially by installing the OS from a DVD! This would be a good system for a variety of different Mac OS versions, especially if you need to quickly test something. Great video!

Hello Tom, congratulations are due for your perseverance and well saved! 👍👍 A very enjoyable video!👍👍 If I recall correctly that MM., can handle a maximum of 16 GB., of DDR3 RAM.., do those fans come apart, if so, perhaps you could use the case from the old fan to fix the new one.

The Mac mini 2010 also makes for a real nice Windows XP gaming PC with Bootcamp, since it comes with Mac OS X 10.6 out of the box. Note that the versions above 10.6.4 dropped support for installing XP via Bootcamp, though you can still upgrade OS X to higher versions after the Windows installation (though 10.6 is kind of a sweet spot for me, as it still includes Rosetta for PowerPC games). Bootcamp only supports the 32-bit version of XP, and requires at least SP2.
@willibald.cornfedАй бұрын
Additionally, you‘re probably already aware, but the 2010 Mac mini was also available as a Server edition, which omitted the optical drive and had two HDD/SSD drive bays instead. If I’m not mistaken, the second drive was more difficult to get to for replacement.
@ItsMyNaturalColour2 күн бұрын
@@willibald.cornfed I knew about the server 2010, but must admit I've never thought of a 2010 Mac mini as a Windows XP machine. That's pretty wild! I'm very curious about that actually. Wonder if I should give it a go one day.

Fair play Tom for getting it running. Shame you had to buy a new board. What would have been good for you is if you could compare the 2 boards and see if there was any obvious damage that in the future you could try and fix. Either that or maybe collaborate with one of them fixit channels that do videos on reparing stuff like this. Just an idea 😊

Great video Tom, I love these 2010 minis. Though if I can give some constructive criticism, really not a fan of the production. One of the reasons I love IMNC and always have is the raw, real nature of the videos. I think the 'turn the camera on, do something cool and chat about it' format is really missing on KZbin these days. and while you've somewhat bridged the gap, the background music (which always drives me up the wall), sound effects and production takes away from the video. I end up just skipping through the video. I even preferred teh camera mic with the room acoustics and preamp hiss - it's more real, more 'guy messing with computers and recording it for entertainment'. I get you've put a ton of effort into it though.
@ItsMyNaturalColourАй бұрын
Hey Ashley! I completely understand your comment. I agree, KZbin is really missing that feel these days. Don't worry though, that's not going away any time soon on my channel. The next video is set to be nearly 2 hours long and full of rambles.

Yes absolutely. In situations like this, sadly it's not worth repairing. I did it for the video of course, which was fun and is rewarding to share with you all, but if I was tinkering with this stuff on my own I would definitely not spend that sort of money on a logic board.

Is it really fixing the computer if you swap out the logic board? More of a computer replacement as the computer IS the logic board. If you broke out an oscilloscope and a digital microscope and actually FIXED the logic board: now that would be impressive

Of course! Component level repair is obviously much more impressive and actually requires skill. I'm just sat in my room following an iFixit guide and trying not to break stuff too much.
