Everyone lies. Even you and even me. We lie about small things and we lie about big things. We lie to help ourselves and we lie to protect others. Powerful people lie, all the way down to little kids telling fibs. Why do we do this if we’re supposed to be the most socially developed species on Earth? Why can’t we tell the truth? Are we doomed to lie? Well, maybe. Here’s why.

I lie because 1. Many truths are embarrassing 2. I hate condemnation. 3. The most common one, I know what people want to hear, I know what makes them more comfortable so I try to get to a common ground which is hard when you simply lay out all the truths without exaggeration or degration

As a person with Asperger's, I have difficulty with lying to people. Like I understand that it's for survival and making situations not awkward, which I guess is fine as long as it's not going to hurt someone. But if the lie is going to hurt someone more than telling them the truth, then you should just tell the truth. No matter how awkward it becomes.

@@sologamer8287 Hi Solo gamer, you have identified a difficulty in the discussion. It depends on which lie you are talking about. For example, if we angrily ask a child, "Did you spill this chocolate milk on the sofa?" they may feel that we are too irritable for them to dare to tell the truth. It would be better if we said something like, "Mmm ... someone has spilled chocolate milk on the sofa. Maybe a good rule in the future, is to make sure we have the coffee table ready to put the cup on before we bring the drink over. That could prevent accidents." That way, we focus more on the solution than on the problem. On the other hand, if the problem is more serious, then it might be different. We the parent suspect that our teenager has been stealing money from our purse in order to buy drugs. However, what is likely to enable the teenager to talk about this? If we shout angrily, are they likely to confess that they are developing a drug addiction? We can convey that this is a very serious matter but also give the message that we want to help them to get free of a growing drug habit. The question becomes ... what kind of conversation is likely to lead to the teenager changing their behavior?... especially as this may not happen overnight.
@tracesprite6078
@tracesprite6078 Жыл бұрын
@@sologamer8287 I agree that in a police station or a court of law, it is important to insist on the truth. Ironically, sometimes police use such aggressive tactics that they may force a false confession out of someone who is innocent.

Now in this video everything you said makes total sense and that’s why I believe that in your last statement the truth is reversed. If there's no honesty in a relationship, then it's too polite and superficial to be satisfying but if we're brutally honest all the time, then it may be too painful to survive. But maybe we can actively notice the good things which are also true e.g. "You are very faithful to the creative side of your personality and that really seems to give you satisfaction in life." Truth doesn't always have to be a judgement of someone but it can merely be an observation which shows that we notice and value the other person.

Sometimes the whole truth might be too brutal. You could say to me, " Well, now you've put on that weight, you may be going to die ten years earlier." But you'll probably choose not to say that because it's pointlessly cruel. I could say, "Yes, I see why he had that affair. You're so snippy and critical, that he probably just wanted to be with someone who really enjoyed his company." Even if that is useful information, am I really sure I'm right about that and do I want to lose your friendship when I have already lost several friends by offering my unasked for "insights"?

What is truth or lies when all that matter is how much $$$$ you got in the bank and your social rank in our racial caste system. The law dgaf about the reality of a crime, just what outcome is best for the poltical elite who wrote the law and those who enforce the law. If you're black and poor there are many companies and states eager for your free labor which they will extract by locking you in a box 24/7 and only allowing you out in exchange for your labor. That doesn't even go into the new prison economy that let's these companies bleed dry the friends and family of the imprisoned. A necessity of human life like a roll of toilet paper that retails for .30? Now, it can only be bought from the prison commissary and its $10. Same for soap, shampoo, socks, etc. Even the letters sent to inmates can only be accessed on tablets that cost $50 upfront and $5 per download

I have two things that this made me think about. 1: I'm autistic, and while I still do tell little white lies all the time in casual conversation, it just doesn't come as easily to me. A lot of these social rules aren't so much something that come naturally to me, but something I've had to learn the hard way. I often forget that when someone you're not particularly close to asks how you're doing, you're essentially just supposed to say you're fine, even if you're not. It's also harder for me to keep things to myself that should be more private. While I can consciously tell the difference, it seems that it's sometimes hard for my brain to tell the difference between "keeping secrets" and "this person doesn't need or want to know this." I know they're different but sometimes they *feel* the same. 2: A lot of people, (Like Immanual Kant 🙄) will say that lying is always wrong no matter what. But i firmly believe that not only is it sometimes okay, as you explored in this video, it is sometimes *necessary.* Sometimes it's wrong not to lie. If your friend comes out to you as gay, or trans, or anything, but they're not ready to come out to other people yet, you *must* lie for them. If you go around telling people in their life, you're betraying their trust and possibly putting them in danger. But even if they're not in danger, it's simply not your truth to tell, it's their decision to make, not yours.

Same. It's hard to not lie, especially growing in a family which was mostly neglectful to me and never respected me for myself; being in a society that gossips about you, judges you, even possibly hurt you for how you appear to them. The common thing is: People don't really care about the individuality of others. I must lie to survive my toxic environments that destroy me for being myself. No matter whether it's my home or college or whatever place. It's my life until I die. I will be a good human in my own way. Your honesty can be a gift but use it sparingly. People are not often feeling strong enough for your insights which may not always be as accurate as you like to believe. Also there are often several honest things that you can say at any time. Why not choose the more encouraging one? You could say "Your house is so messy" but you could instead say "Thanks for this lovely hot cup of tea. It's just what I was needing." You could say, "I can't understand why you belong to that dumb religion" or you might be better to say "Well, I can't agree with your religion but I can see that it's helping you to get through this tough time since your father died."

One of my teachers, who I consider to be one of the smartest and most well organized, always had a small section at the top of the test, an "I won't cheat or tell anyone else about the test." Although he only went so far to enforcing it as deducting a large number of points for not signing the pledge properly, I now think he might have done it because he knew that cheating would at least go down if everyone made the promise. Pretty interesting, vid!

I did my own social experiment years ago. I gave everyone a complete and honest answer to everything they asked me. The result was that after about three months everyone avoided talking to me entirely. The obvious conclusion is people ask a lot of questions they do not want honest answers to.

If your kids lie to you it’s because when they told the truth, your reaction frightened them. My scary mum’s behaviour conditioned me to lie, which is sad because do genuinely value honesty. In my adult years I’ve been trying really hard to break the habit.

I've read that in a lot of African Tribes lying to save someone's feelings is considered more virtuous than telling a truth that can cause a conflict unless it's absolutely necessary. It's better to lie and keep harmony and tell the truth and cause chaos something like that, because you need complete harmony to survive in nature with your tribesman it makes sense why we'd continue it now.

People lie because we have an instinct to survive. We confuse our ego, more often than not, with our physical self. So to preserve our egos, we lie to keep them alive.
