If there's no honesty in a relationship, then it's too polite and superficial to be satisfying but if we're brutally honest all the time, then it may be too painful to survive. But maybe we can actively notice the good things which are also true e.g. "You are very faithful to the creative side of your personality and that really seems to give you satisfaction in life." Truth doesn't always have to be a judgement of someone but it can merely be an observation which shows that we notice and value the other person.

One of my teachers, who I consider to be one of the smartest and most well organized, always had a small section at the top of the test, an "I won't cheat or tell anyone else about the test." Although he only went so far to enforcing it as deducting a large number of points for not signing the pledge properly, I now think he might have done it because he knew that cheating would at least go down if everyone made the promise. Your honesty can be a gift but use it sparingly. People are not often feeling strong enough for your insights which may not always be as accurate as you like to believe. Also there are often several honest things that you can say at any time. Why not choose the more encouraging one? You could say "Your house is so messy" but you could instead say "Thanks for this lovely hot cup of tea. It's just what I was needing." You could say, "I can't understand why you belong to that dumb religion" or you might be better to say "Well, I can't agree with your religion but I can see that it's helping you to get through this tough time since your father died."

Sometimes the whole truth might be too brutal. You could say to me, " Well, now you've put on that weight, you may be going to die ten years earlier." But you'll probably choose not to say that because it's pointlessly cruel. I could say, "Yes, I see why he had that affair. You're so snippy and critical, that he probably just wanted to be with someone who really enjoyed his company." Even if that is useful information, am I really sure I'm right about that and do I want to lose your friendship when I have already lost several friends by offering my unasked for "insights"?

What is truth or lies when all that matter is how much $$$$ you got in the bank and your social rank in our racial caste system. The law dgaf about the reality of a crime, just what outcome is best for the poltical elite who wrote the law and those who enforce the law. If you're black and poor there are many companies and states eager for your free labor which they will extract by locking you in a box 24/7 and only allowing you out in exchange for your labor. That doesn't even go into the new prison economy that let's these companies bleed dry the friends and family of the imprisoned. A necessity of human life like a roll of toilet paper that retails for .30? Now, it can only be bought from the prison commissary and its $10. Same for soap, shampoo, socks, etc. Even the letters sent to inmates can only be accessed on tablets that cost $50 upfront and $5 per download

"How are you?" "Good thanks" is normal for a quick greeting when you run into each other in passing but if you make the time to sit down over a coffee, then most people want to go deeper. They have their struggles that they want to talk over and most people are also willing to listen to your story. If you start with a bit of the less upsetting news, then you can test the waters to see if they can bear some more serious stuff. Many people like to help others so if you say "That was so good to be able to share that story with you," then they will feel encouraged by that.

I've read that in a lot of African Tribes lying to save someone's feelings is considered more virtuous than telling a truth that can cause a conflict unless it's absolutely necessary. It's better to lie and keep harmony and tell the truth and cause chaos something like that, because you need complete harmony to survive in nature with your tribesman it makes sense why we'd continue it now.

It's hard to not lie, especially growing in a family which was mostly neglectful to me and never respected me for myself; being in a society that gossips about you, judges you, even possibly hurt you for how you appear to them. The common thing is: People don't really care about the individuality of others. I must lie to survive my toxic environments that destroy me for being myself. No matter whether it's my home or college or whatever place. It's my life until I die. I will be a good human in my own way. I'll lie to protect myself from the things which harm me from outside, and to protect others from the ugly knowledge of how messed up my life would seem to others if they were to know my repressed life.

I almost never carry cash because I don't think it safe and, when I do, it's usually not for very long. Sometimes, I ask what they need the money for. If they say food, coffee or even cigarettes, I may go and buy that for them. If I do have cash, I will tell them I will not give them the money but if they need something, I will go buy it for them. I'm trying to help people, not keep them drunk or high.

Yes and no? Sometimes it's true in the sense that the person doesn't have _literal_ cash like coins and bills, but only digital money on their phone or money on their cards. Sometimes, it's what you mentioned where they _do_ have money, but they don't have any excess to give away. So it's like telling the future truth, but at present it's a lie. Also, sometimes it's both. You have money, just not bills/coins. And even if you could convert it, there wouldn't be any excess to give away.

Absolutely. I'm autistic and I felt this very hard throughout this video. I've only recently been able to force myself to develop some kind of "tact filter", but it's a hell of a lot of work trying to "simulate" various scenarios and guess their responses, at least until I have built up enough scripts for similar situations to just rattle off on autopilot. For my whole life I was called rude, brusque, verbose, shares too much, etc. I never understood why people would react the way they would. I would especially freak out over how some of those complaints seemed contradictory to each other. Hell, it only struck me a year or so ago that "inappropriate behaviour" in autistic diagnostic criteria includes 90% of my childhood, when I had always previously thought it just meant really obvious things like getting naked in public or swearing at your teacher or stuff. But not responding "appropriately" to "how're you doing?" does actually count. Just going "yes" or "no" instead of "yes please" or "no thank you" counts. Basically everything I said as a child wasn't "socially appropriate" in some large or small way. Watching this video was like some glimpse into NTs' brains... like .. I had no idea ~80% of most people's lies were self-serving ones? Like 90% of mine are ones told for the sake of others (whatever he called those ones). Like, I felt so gross and dirty the first time a stranger at the checkout asked how my day has been and I just said "fine". It was like, oh my god, I'm such a liar. But they didn't get upset at me it and just went on as normal. When for all the rest of my adult life prior to that, everything would get ground to a halt as I discussed yet another day of dealing with disabilities when they weren't prepared for it. But it still took over a year of intensive practice to feel comfortable doing so. And now I've trained myself to start off slowly if I am going to tell the truth, "tbh things haven't been so good" or something similar. Obviously that's a different kind of "no filter" than ADHD, more about never having been taught how or why or where or when, rather than having the knowledge but being unable to act on it, so I don't wanna act like I know exactly what it's like for you. (And, like, apologies if that wasn't said very good either, a couple of my partners have ADHD and we've talked about it a lot but that still doesn't mean I know what it's like, so feel free to correct me if you want) But like anyway, I can relate to the social problems that come from being "overly truthful", is rly the point I'm trying to make I think. For me it was like.... everyone around me said to always tell the truth and 6 year old me would call them out when I noticed them lying. And they'd get upset like oh that wasn't a lie, or, oh it's okay this time, and I never understood wtf was going on. So my "inability" to lie, I think, was more of a moral compulsion kind of a thing, especially considering I have OCD as well to amplify the existing autistic rigidity therein. Before I started training myself to tell socially lubricating small lies this past few years, I only ever lied to protect people I cared about from consequences. AKA when there was a pressing reason to. Like I always disagreed with Kant's "never tell a lie, even to a murderer asking where your friend is hiding". But why should I ever have had a reason to lie about my emotional state? Is how I saw it. And people telling me, well, y'know, they prefer it when you say you're doing fine, really confused me for a long time. "Why would they ask me if they don't want the answer?", I'd think. And of course I never asked them back, either, because I didn't really want to know, and which I'm sure contributed to my perception as rude. But now I've gotten better at "oh, pretty good, how about yourself?" script. And they go, "not bad, not bad", and then talk business. It still baffles me why it works... but at least now I know it does work to make them feel at ease. I can tell myself, It's just to break the ice. While, as an autistic person, I never had ice to break. (Which, come to think of it, really influenced how I date as well... not needing to have any of my ice broken because there was no ice... but I digress!) It's nice seeing how many other comments on this video are from NA folks who felt similarly to me about it, as well. I was considering just writing a top level comment saying similar things but seeing these other comments. I figure I should just reply to those and increase their chances of showing near the top.
