This is a tool assisted speedrun of Spongebob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom, created with the “cav-disc-drive” exe on Dolphin 4.0-3964.
The weather's been a little crazy this past week. So because of that, I had three days in a row where school was cancelled, which is where I found the time to make this run.
This was made for the sole purpose of entertainment and demonstration of tricks that are not often used in non-TAS runs. This was NOT made with the intent of frame perfect optimization.

I found a new route for Goo Lagoon, just so you know. Instead of spongegliding to the pier, go out of bounds so Hans grabs you. Then do a Bubble Bowl Boost. If you do it correctly, you will get launched straight to the pier.

PhillySophagusGAMING SGDQ is Summer Games Done Quick, an annual event that lasts for a week in summer where speedrunners world-wide go to one place and speedrun, similar to other fanbase meet-ups. AGDQ is Awesome Games Done Quick, and is also an annual event exactly same to SGDQ except it's in the winter. GDQ is Games Done Quick and is both SGDQ and AGDQ pretty much. Udd and I got so close to a Spongebob-only playthrough, but we only managed 73 or so spatulas even including a certain very difficult method of walking across the walls of the Mermalair. A lot of people have been saying that the reason BFBB speedruns have been constantly rejected for Games Done Quick is because it's a "meme game", as in a game that became well-known mainly because of internet memes. I have looked on the Speed Demos Archive forum, and after looking at the AGDQ 2014 submission topic, I do not think this is the case. Battle for Bikini Bottom was submitted twice, and at least two other Spongebob games were submitted. The person in charge of directing the marathon said in response to the BFBB submissions that he didn't think the games had a big speedrunning audience. And I'll be honest: This game is great, and it does have amazing speedrun potential, but I kind of agree with what he said. I know only a few people who have done speedruns of this game, and while it does have a following, it's definitely not big enough to be at a big event like GDQ without people losing interest.

+ZenotoX To be honest, I'm not sure whether or not we can. I've heard many people praise this game, often considering it one of the best licensed games ever. However, not every response I've found was a positive one (In particular, reviewer Somecallmejohnny seems to be indifferent about the game). While it does seem to be a good licensed game, and probably even good by regular game standards, it still doesn't match the same kind of reception as something like, say, Ducktales. And probably the biggest problem: No matter how good the game is, there's no changing the fact that it's a *Spongebob* game. There's appeal in games like Rescue Rangers or Darkwing Duck because those are shows that are remembered fondly, as well as having good licensed games. Of course, Spongebob IS remembered fondly by people. Unfortunately, most of the love for the show is probably still eclipsed by the significant decline in quality the show had starting with the 4th season and ending after the 15th episode of Season 9. And even with Hillenburg back in a lead position on the show, its undying cash cow nature still weighs it down. To sum it up: Not everyone likes this game, and not everyone likes Spongebob enough to sit through it at GDQ.

it's a tactic called storage, he storing the animation of the bubble bowl on the wall, which will allow the runner to, in this case jump up with the Viking hat jump thing I can't remember the name of. because of this storage, some codes don't work, such as being able to walk up a wall.

How does the cruise bubble thing work? I see that there's extra speed (in a single direction?) that comes from it, allowing for crazy jumps and sequence breaks, but what exactly is happening?

It's a technique known as Cruise Boosting. Whenever you use the Bubble Bowl, you skid fowards a little bit. Using the Cruise Bubble and Bubble Bowl at the same time against certain surfaces lets this foward movement from the Bubble Bowl stack on top of each other, allowing for a shit ton of momentum to be built up.

You seem to be forgetting the fact that his run was done on Xbox and this TAS was made on Gamecube, if you factor in the load time difference this TAS is still faster by a minute or 2. There's also been a lot of new strats found since the making of this TAS, a newer more up to date TAS would sub hour on Gamecube (there's one being made but it's still a ways away from being done).

I'm not so sure about that, you can also end the Prawn and Flying Dutchman fights doing a similar thing. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3zWmWSjls16ic0 and kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX2mq2d_gKljmqc) I asked someone who could take apart the game and view these sorts of triggers if it works anywhere else and he said these are the only 3 places, Robo Patrick and Robo Sandy seem to not have triggers like this. As to why these actually exist? I think they're some sort of leftover from making/testing the game, instead of removing them, the devs just placed them really high up where they thought would be inaccessible. Maybe?

Using it on the same frame as Bubble Bowl cancels the Bubble Bowl animation but keeps its speed, you need to be rubbing a wall a certain way to go really fast.

+Alex Musick There isn't much to document really, no one understands that trick whatsoever. I have a general idea as to why spongeglides work, but actually activating that one is incredibly inconsistent. A lot of people use different setups to get the same outcome, I personally: zoom the camera in, stand with spongebob's left foot in the red circle and his right foot outside it (touching the wall of the tower), and then line my camera up so the bus stop on the other side of the water is behind the back right pole of the tower. then just double jump back, swing, damage jump, ground pound, and pray it works. GDGProductions That probably should've been its own comment, but I'll explain anyway. TAS stands for "Tool Assisted Speedrun." Basically this run wasn't performed in real time, the way you see it. Tools were used to ensure that absolutely everything in the run was done perfectly. Usually, the way this is done is that the game is played one frame at a time, with the player deciding when to advance to the next frame. In addition, save states are often used, so that if you do somehow mess up on something you can go back and try again without losing any time. There's plenty of other tools that can be and are used (like scripts, rewinding, etc) but what I've already said is the gist of it.

+SakuxZaku95 When entering Jellyfish Fields? It's a glitch we call "disable hand". Basically the way Taxi's work is they spawn an object that warps you to the area, in this case Jellyfish Fields, shortly after you call the taxi (while your controls are still locked). By calling the taxi while being grabbed by the hand, the game repositions you before the warp spawns. Since it was never programmed to leave automatically, the warp object is still there when Spongebob respawns, which allows you do something interesting. I don't know all the specifics yet, but when you warp in this game, a handful of values relating to Spongebob's state are remembered. One of them being the "Spongebob is being grabbed by the hand, disable other all other hand triggers" state. Now in normal gameplay, you can't pause warp or spawn in-level warps while the hand is grabbing you, but since the warp is already spawned, you can interrupt hand dragging you off the screen by being dragged into it. This causes the value for spongebobs state to remain in the one I mentioned earlier. tl;dr It puts Spongebob in a state where all hand triggers are ignored, allowing huge skips in stages like at 2:20, 14:00 and 1:01:20

+Bob Collins We call that the Cruise Boost (CB), it's one of the more recent finds in this game, probably less than two years old. I guess what it does is give Spongebob a default speed much higher than he's supposed to move, which gets added onto his walking speed making him move even faster. It was first found by me, but then later optimized by a user named coel625. The trick is done by using cruise bubble and bubble bowl on the same frame. Moving while using cruise bubble cancels the animation, and bubble bowl has a set speed to it when it's done from a standstill. That's the key to it, canceling bubble bowl but keeping the initial speed it adds to Spongebob (it also puts him in a weird state where turning is much slower). Anyway it didn't take long for me to find out you can only do the trick while standing still, which doesn't give much speed. Coel then realized that you actually can do the trick while moving, as long as Spongebob isn't actually "moving". This is why it's always preformed on a wall of some sort, Spongebob can have a lot of momentum running at a wall, and you can still use the cruise bubble as long as his position is static when you press the button. The amount of speed bubble bowl adds to spongebob is a lot greater if you were moving fast when you press X, and that's why this TAS gets such ridiculous speeds with the glitch.
