SAVING BIKINI BOTTOM (a sandy cheeks movie) is a new take on a protagonist that puts Spongebob into the sidekick role, and gives everyone else shared screentime with humans on the surface world. And as the movies have slowly pulled us out of the water more and more, this time we've gone full on with most of the film taking place in Texas. I watched this earlier today with my little sisters (given how I heard about the fuss when it leaked), and while they’re both 4 and 5 and don’t get the film’s issues and the disses it throws as SH’s legacy, I could not believe how anyone who worked on this looked at the final product and said ‘Yeah, this is good!’. The writing is stale, the VA work is lacking, the VFX are cheap, and overall this just feels like Nickelodeon are trying as hard as possible to dumb Spongebob down as much as possible so that Gen Alpha kids who have low attention spans will give it undeserved love. And it hurts to see, it really does. I know I sound like an echo here, but the fact is, SpongeBob just isn’t working anymore. Nobody who’s working on it cares about the characters or beloved world building in any way shape or form. This is easily the most uncanny product of the entire franchise, it was such a baffling watching experience. 😵‍💫 I don’t know, feel free to disagree, but I think this is the lowest low point of the SpongeBob franchise so far.

The thing that confuses me the most is that the idea of Sandy going to Texas to visit her family/ save the other characters could have been one or two episodes not a whole movie. This movie has all the voice actors return and the characterizations (While still not as good as the early seasons) are still relatively consistent with their basic personality. This movie and the Spongebob series as a whole is a beaten up zombie at this point but it still has a soul that sometimes shines through. One of the worst things about this movie is that it shouldn’t even be canon. The theory goes that the SpongeBob Movie 1 was the real ending, since the whole point is to end it off with him becoming manager, which would mean that sandy was already exposed for being a squirrel working for a science villain, and would ruin the “working for science reasons,” meaning she turned against the villain for her friends. Also why did they make sandy a flying squirrel? I guess the creators just improvised. I’m surprised her family isn’t all revealed to be the same type of squirrel as her. Anyways, what I am saying is that this movie shouldn’t even exist in the SpongeBob universe. Animation of the human heads are also very badly edited.

Not really. All that stuff about him hating spinoffs was waaaay in the past, and taken out of context. Remember, half of these people working on the movie were his personal friends. They respect his _actual_ wishes, not the ones projected by KZbinrs who didn't get the full story. Besides, you have to also be aware that he signed _contracts_ with Nick long before he passed. Those very contracts mean he turns rights over to _them_ so it's only "his" show in terms of Directing. They own the rights to it. This is why you never see Amy use Making Fiends anymore.

This movie is boring and gross: sh*t smelling, feet tickling, fish kissing, why did they even add that? This movie could be decent if they only focused on Sandy and spend as little as possible on focusing on the live-action actors. Develop Sandy, show us, how she became a scientist out of the circus acrobat. How she got so strong and smart. I would love to see that and not some weird fetishes from writers. Also there were a base of the conflict - the mother of Sandy said, that they are ok with her doing anything she likes, but she needs to stay in Texas, and then...They just forgot about this, it was never brought up again. Why? Just focus on Sandy, it's her movie.

It's strange, but it doesn't get worse over the time. The leaked plankton movie is so solid. In my opinion, one of the best movies. No spoilers, but I think it's important to mention: Live-action is saved only for a few gags, no live-action important roles. The songs are cute, the Sponge doesn't act like a minion (from illumination) and actually has feelings. There are even animation-style changes sometimes. I just wanted to mention it because I think a lot of people will not see this movie after the Sandy one being so terrible, but please, just watch it when it will come out, if you can. It's actually good and wholesome (imo).
