I like the fact that Spider Woman isn't just a female counterpart of Spider Man. I'm planning to start following her story, where do you think I should begin? Also, who owns the rights to her movies?
@ItsSuperEffective10 жыл бұрын
It's probably Marvel who owns the Spiderwoman movies, as she has nothing to do with Spiderman, however no one is 100% sure, not even Marvel. As for her story, I would say just wait untill the new Spiderwoman comic comes out in a few months!
@44excalibur8 жыл бұрын
+ItsSuperEffective Jessica Drew/Spider Woman should be totally owned by Marvel, because she debuted in her own separate comic and had no connection to Peter Parker's storyline. She's the creation of the High Evolutionary, not any radioactive spider or some blood transfusion from Peter.
@dannytanner13158 жыл бұрын
+ItsSuperEffective I've just discovered your awesome videos. To add to what you've said, Filmation produced a similar hero named Web Woman in the late 70's, and Marvel wanted to lose the use of a Spider Woman name or character, so they made the 1979 cartoon series. It came before the comics etc. If I'm not mistaken.
@dannytanner13158 жыл бұрын
+ItsSuperEffective My bad, Marvel DIDN'T want to lose the name/possible character named Spider Woman, so Franz Depatie created the Spider Woman cartoon series with Knott's Landing actress Joan Van Ark voicing Spiderwoman. In the show, Jessica's dad used a spider serum to cure her after an injury which granted her powers. I hated her "nephew" Billy though.

One thing I find that tends to always be missing from your videos is the love interests. I understand that a character's love interests don't define the character and some people don't see them to be important (especially some of the comic book couples being thrown together at a whim) but I find them really interesting. I would appreciate you adding this aspect into your videos, even if it is a single comment about their main love interests that only takes up a few seconds.
@ItsSuperEffective10 жыл бұрын
Not every character has love interests. I also intentionally leave stuff out so people can find stuff out for themselves if they choose to research the characters. Remember that this channel is not and never will be an alternate to actually reading comics, so unless a love interest is SUPER important (I.E Like Dick Grayson and Starfire with their wedding) I won't mention it.

I think that there are so many diffrent stories about Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman so it would hopefully be a good idea to just make a whole new story. No sequel. No prequel. Just a whole new story that keeps her classic appearance. If it will be a movie about Spider-Woman, I think it would be really good if the movie was about a high school student with the same name (Jessica Drew) and she gets her powers and abilities by a radioactive spider. Sure it sounds familiar with the Spider-Man story, but I was thinking that this story sounds simple and not so complicated. Of course it's just an idea. If you have a better idea, please let me know. I hope you like my idea of course :)

I love Jessica drew's spider-woman character but it's just sad how she hasn't gotten that big break. I feel like they need to use some aspects of her past background but re imagine her almost completely , like for insistence what if she did a little bit of a Peter parer and starts her adventure in high school and instead of having some-one like tony stark as a mentor, she had an hydra agent? I mean there is so many possibility's for her and even a few with spider-man. which to be honest would be really cool if they had them paired up more often.

After watching this, it confirms my opinion that Marvel just cannot handle their female characters properly. I was a fan of both Marvel and DC since the early to mid-eighties, so I've seen a lot of changes & stuff, but that's one thing that's become very apparent. Both companies are equally bad at handling their female characters. I actually can't think of any that haven't been messed up, remade, rebooted or whose history isn't a total confusing mess.

You may want to research this situation a bit more, it's a very long standing and a very important situation, and I really do encourage you to not deny it... There is a novel I recommend you read called "Marvel: The Untold Story" that gives quite a good bit of clarity on this subject.
@AllisterH10 жыл бұрын
Slight correction. Spiderwoman was created for the same reason She-hulk was created. It wasn't DC per se that Marvel was afraid of, it was actually the late 70s networks, specifically CBS. In the late 70s, marvel licensed both Hulk and Spiderman for live action series (the former being much more well known as well as being more popular). Around this time, there was also a show called the six million dollar man. On said show, there was an episode that eventually lead to a spin-of series, namely the Bionic woman. What marvel realized at the time of that successful spinoff was that the original license agreement between itself and CBS was that ANY character created by the live action that didn't have a prior marvel copy would belong to CBS. Marvel, given how popular bionic woman had become and along with the popularity of the incredible hulk thought there was a possibility of the same thing happening with both Spiderman and Hulk. Thus, the creation of She-hulk and Spiderwoman.

If you're talking about her having a child currently, Jess wanted a baby so got a donor. It's a pretty refreshing take on what's a REALLY tired go-to trope for writers trying to draw attention to female characters. (It's usually either pregnancy or marriage.)

You didn't mention anything about her packing a kid in her tummy? But, As I read this part as she was in a space hospital and skrulls showed up to take out a very young skrull prince. She actually showed a lot of good moves, as she used kick boxing and karate moves and used skrull assault weapons. I feel, they should of had her as a shield agent and wore a shield version of her ugly spiderwomans suit and she was part of a special unite and wore this shield spider suite when she is working solo or with the Avengers. and she carries all sort of weapons.

I totally agree w/ you 100% Jess Drew has always been a problematic character. The origin that was detailed in the 1st published issue of Spider-Woman in the 70's is totally different that the now "official" origin that was published in the '05 ORIGIN miniseries. Hopefully Marvel will get it right with her one day LOL. Personally my favorite Spider-Woman is Julia Carpenter, I love how she was a divorcee/single mom and she became a superhero out of desperation and lack of resources. I hate that they changed her costume recently, I guess because so many people complained about the previous one being being too revealing. Nevermind the Hulk and all his impossibly ripped muscles though, it's okay when it's a male being "objectified" ...
@crogers6748 жыл бұрын
+CosmicUndeadElf Before I get started I just want to let you know that I'm not trying to be rude whatsoever, I'm just trying to have a civil conversation. So if I DO say anything that comes off as rude that is COMPLETELY unintentional on my part. I would appreciate it if you take the time to read through the whole comment, as I believe I'll have presented an interesting point of view by the end. You of course by no means have to, nor do I expect you agree with me 100% by the end of this. If you do agree then hey, that's cool. If you don't that's fine, it's your opinion after all. Have you ever heard of "false equivalence" before? The Hulk isn't considered sexy by any straight/bi/pan women I know. He's what one would call a "Male Power Fantasy." A MPF is genuinely a ripped, hulking, badass, always get the girl type of guy who takes 10x more "macho supplements" then he probably should. Other characters that abide by this are Superman, Batman, Captain America, Kranos, He-Man, Wolverine, Duke Nukem, The Punisher, most if not all of the male MK characters and many, many others. MPF characters are often also what some would call "Escapist Characters." An EC is basically a depiction of what the audience wants to be. In the case of men in both comic book and video games an EC would be a male protagonist (sometimes silent depending on how far the escapism goes) who is insanely ripped (like a body builder), powerful, incredibly talented, and extremely popular to the opposite sex. There isn't inherently anything wrong with a MPF or ECs. In fact they can be great in their own ways. The problem's that come with female characters is that they are very rarely escapist and are more there as eye-candy the male reader/viewer/player. Female characters are often given unrealistic body types, for example having a size 5 shirt size while also have f-size breasts is... uncommon. Not only that but their clothes tend to be both extremely revealing and impracticable. Fishnets? Sleeveless shirts/tube tops? Miniskirts? No pants, but some odd sorta but not quite underwear? Yeah... impractical. To add to this they're often put in sexual posses that you'd never see a male character in. These types of things often make female fans uncomfortable and perpetuate negative body imagery that women have to deal with on a regular basis. (For example there are actually young women in the world who are having several RIBS surgically removed so that they have a better chance at having the impossible hour glass figure shape that Disney's Princesses, Barbies, and yes, Superhero women have.) It REALLY IS a big problem that needs to be addressed. Now this isn't to say that absolutely no male heroes are sexualized. It is simply that it is in a MUCH SMALLER margin than it is with female characters. As I've stated above Hulk counts as a MPF, an actual male character that DOES get sexualized fairly often is Nightwing from DC. HOWEVER, his sexualization is often played for laughs. For example, a female character will meet him and comment on his god looks (usually his ass) and then he thanks them in a confused, flustered, or perturbed manner. Then the joke is done for a few issues. To go along with this MOST opposite-gender-oriented women find leaner, but still muscular men (like runners or acrobats) attractive, not the body-builder level men that are often a part of a MPF, such as, again, The Hulk. On a final note I'd like to say one thing. I don't mind if female characters show some skin (maybe they don't have long sleeves, or they have some cleavage showing, or their outfits show off their legs) as long as their outfits or super-suits aren't super impractical. Lastly I don't think it's wrong to show women desiring sex, nor do I think it's wrong to show intercourse or whether or not the woman has a very active (or very not) sex life, as women DO desire sex the same as men do, and some women ARE very active sexually. What I don't like is when their characters are treated as props for the male viewership to ogle. I don't know if anything I said will help you understand my point of view, let alone if your opinion has changed. If the first didn't happen then that's fine, at least I tried. If the second didn't happen that's also fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, even if I disagree.

***** I said that nobody cares when men are objectified but when a women is people act like it's the end of the world. I don't care what anyone says, her old costume was much better and not just because of how revealing it was, now she doesn't even look like a super hero. She's not even wearing a mask anymore, just some glasses yeah brilliant disguise there Marvel!
@crogers6748 жыл бұрын
+CosmicUndeadElf That's because men get significantly LESS objectified then woman. Studies have shown that the extreme objectification of women in media (all media) has had ramifications on society and how women are treated, and that those same ramifications have barely, if ever, touched men. For example men irl don't need to meet NEARLY as many beauty standards as women and the ones that they do aren't nearly as difficult. This isn't to say that it's okay to overly sexualize men either, because either way you are turning a representation of a group of people into eye-candy, and that's just wrong. A lot of writers don't seem to understand how to show adults having consensual sex, or even how to just show women having an active sex life without it jumping headlong into this problem. A lot of the perceived male objectification in media is just romantification. Reading the line between this and sexual objectification can be admittedly difficult but it's there. Male characters are rarely ever just there as sex objects for female readers. Again, the only one I can think of in comics to get legitimately sexualized is Nightwing, and most people I know actually get uncomfortable when other characters flirt with him because he's often PORTRAYED as being uncomfortable with the attention himself. You can't really say no one cares when it happens, because people do. Batman basically got raped by Talia Al Ghul and Nightwing WAS raped and there was major fan outcry after both instances due to the writers basically trying to push that "They're men so they had to like it" which is so, so wrong and just enforces so many bad things already in media that make it so men irl who have been raped feel like they can't report it. Basically what I'm saying is that when characters get overly sexualized in media it's going to get outcry no matter the gender, but since women get sexualized a significantly greater amount then men you hear about it more. Which makes sense, especially given how objectified women are in real life.

Very good video.... LOL @7:42 This is where it gets really, really good, lol I can't believe I lasted this long... grew up with this character, liking her image, but never bought or followed her story at all....sadly, I would screw up with her Origin EVEN MORE. First I would make her from Central America or South America, just because the Marvel Universe needs it....serious, I always thought she was Latin. Second she sounds like she lived a similar pollen to Elektra. Maybe give her some more power like time warp/or bending realms to make her go even more crazy. Most of everything I would keep with Shield, her anxiety, her fear generating, powers, maybe enchant her with magic resistance and she could aid Doctor Strange. Instead of lasers, maybe her mother was enchanted by a witch or something from an alternate realm and that is where she gets her powers and her mysterious disappearance of her parents.... again this is just the top of y head to really screw and piss people off LOL... I would actually use a younger version of her from child(like fire stater movie, Hana, or early teens and see what develops...I would also just caller her code name Arana at start then Spider Woman.(spider in spanish) and no I am not mexican/spanish, I am Canadian. My idea on how to portray Wonderwoman, Super girl, or Ms Marvel/Captain Marvel etc would fix everything wrong with heroine films.... it is so simple why they suck...Elektra, Supergirl, catwoman, etc etc.... step 1...no female villain, 2. no male love interest, just gawking males.... 3. Guys don't want to see a movie with a female villain, unless they are fight a male lead, 4. they don't want the woman they idolize fall for any male in the movie, they ca save men and boy and women who fantasy about her, but can't get her...untouchable like a model/goddess. 5. At the very end she can go out with one like James Bond, but not fall in love with just one guy.... Fantasy allure, usually I just write and keep these things to myself and my own idea....lol IT IS ALL FUN thought to imagine.

The problem woth your idea is there already is a latin Arana in marvel comics, her name is Anya Sofia Corazon but she more goes by Spider-Girl now (she the 2nd one). Oh and BTW she is/was Jessica Drew's apprentice. Jessica Drew is British (though she was Mexican in the 1979 cartoon series and a clone of Peter Parker in the Ultimate Comic timeline). If you want to see her in her British form watch the motion comic Spider-Woman: Agent of Sword (I personally disagree with the video here and it's one of my fav runs of her character ever). Jessica Drew's hair color is naturally blonde but she dies it black (she did that in issue 1 of her 1978 series after the Scotland Yard guy ripped off her mask and saw her face and has just been doing it ever since... but she is a blonde even in her retold origin story by Bendis this was upheld and not retconned) I've seen a few people before think she was Latin due to the black hair and a few due to the old cartoon series. However she's a sassy brit in the main comic universe.

@ItsSuperEffective10 жыл бұрын
Well, the Young Justice cartoon Artemis doesn't exist in the comics. She's a loose adaptation of about 5 characters, most bluntly Tigress and Arrowette, but even then, the two of them are totally different from Artemis.

ItsSuperEffective true indeed. she was a dope character . i hate that they killed the show

What do I have to do to earn you? JK!! I love this history video. I always loved spiderman and to be honest had not a clue that they was so many spider-women in DC, but I guess I should study a bit on the subject, for the spiderman I adore.

Spiderwoman exists only in marvel not dc

If you adore Spider-Man that much, you should know, that he is writen with a hyphen between Spider and Man. It's important. All Marvelheroes with hyphen Man get bad press (just look at the X-Men).

That's right and if you read The comic of The All Star Squadron in The 1980s then you also see how they had this character originally from the Golden Age of DC Comics called The Tarantula a,k,a, Spider-Man and when he's addressed as Spider-man They follow-up even explains that Yes The Tarantula was also called Spider-Man.His first Costume looked similar to that of The Sandman of The Duo of Sandman and Sandy so that's also why in a later issue of The A.S. Squadron they had him switch to a new costume that looked more Spiderlike but still not at all Spider-Man like.Spider-Man wouldn't be created until 2 decades later by The Now Veteran Marvel Comics worker .

Sigh... I wish Marvel would reboot their continuity. It feels so hard to care about or keep up with there characters. The New 52 mad it so easy to understand DC and care about the characters.

I remember there was a spider woman/ spider girl who wore a spider suit similar to venoms character. I think she has red hair and in one series she took down this powerful foe that she collapsed and her daughter panicked when she found her. who is this one?
@BigDapPacino8 жыл бұрын
That is the Force Works character...she was also with Avengers West Coast at one time...she was in the Iron Man books during the early 90's!
@preyforforgiveness71868 жыл бұрын
+BigDapPacino what's her name?
@dannytanner13158 жыл бұрын
+PreyForForgiveness That was Julia Carpenter aka Spider Woman #2. Before they made Venom a separated entity, both Julia and black suit Spidey were shown in the 80's Secret Wars comics. She was in the 90's Iron Man cartoon and in the comics. Her name was later changed to Arachne kinda like how Miles Morales's name is changed to Kid Arachnid in the current cartoon Spider man vs. the Sinister Six.
