Paul Dini is probably the only person that pushes her to the spotlight nowadays. I wish DC does more with her, she's very powerful and has so much potential. :S

She has gone from full blown limitless reality manipulation and not even needing her backwards spellwords to cast her spells to being KO'd by a common mugger. Then again, if you're in DC and you're not Batman or Superman you're pretty much screwed in terms or writing and char. development with some slight exceptions here and there. Actually Zatanna's core character is so morally correct that she has been able to talk Spectre down and she casually converses with supreme magical beings and probably has access to their aid. She's very much like Constantine except she doesn't use trickery to outwit demons, she either just outbadasses them with magic or just talks a more powerful magical entity to aid her. I really dislike the way New 52 has been treating her but it's not as bad as Identity Crisis I guess where one of the most morally correct characters was made out to be pretty much the antihero of the story. Then again, Identity Crisis isn't that much liked by any DC fans I've spoken to so... Go DC, keep spoiling Batman and Superman... Been working out pretty well for you huh?

I've been reading comics since I was about 3 years old xD;; But there is quite a lot of work and research that goes into these videos, generally I start research for a video about 2-3 weeks before its uploaded, but for some characters it can be months.

There's a few things that you didn't mention on the video that are actually important. One is the role of John Constantine in Zatanna's life in American Gothic (crisis on infinite earths parallel series) and how their relationship died when Zatara died (John's fault, for her anyway). This is actually very important for both characters and their relationship in the future. In second place, there is more than what you said about Sindella in JLA vol. 2, she's the main reason why Zatanna changed her classical outfit for the black Bayonetta's poor sister suit! Also, you forgot to add that she had a solo series in 2011 that wasn't properly finished due the n52, written by Paul Dini, that was very, very interesting ;) Giovanni's role at that series is very important thou. Aside of that, this is one of the best videos about her I've found. Thank you!

Zatanna had her own series for a little over a year prior to the New 52. I am not sure if it was mentioned. It was a lot of fun to get to know a very interesting and fun version of Zatanna as a consultant for the magic arts kind of thing. I also remember that she had flashcards of phrases that were written backward so she could practice her spell casting. I also didn't catch why her magic worked that way.

Awesome work sir. Zatanna has always been one of my favorites since I first read about her back when I was 14. Haven't kept up with the New 52 after not really caring for what I read during the first two months of the relaunch and seeing some of the character changes but I'll have to look into her with it.

2007 About the whole "Bruce is childhood friends with Zatanna" thing --technically, since you didn't mention it happening earlier -- the first instance of this is in the Batman the Animated Series back in 1993, in the episode titled "Zatanna." I'm glad it was made comic-canon though.

I'm brand new to Zatanna. Just discovered her today in a fan fic story set at a comic convention. Further investigation mentions Zatanna and Smallville. Now I am not a fan of Superman so I never watched Smallville. Is there any specific reason why these two never got together in any comic? And how did they get together on Smallville? I have watched a few clips on youtube.

Superman is already with Wonder Woman in the comics. His major love interest is indeed Lois Lane but DC changed that since the 2011 reboot. You have to understand the comics and everything else (video games, movies, TV shows, etc) are two separate things. Only the comics are canon. The comics are the source materials but writers on shows and movies can change things seen in the comics to fit their stories. Zatanna was never a love interest for Superman in the comics but the writers on Smallville said "fuck it, lest Zatanna and Superman kiss each other". Zatanna is pretty much a loner in the comics but she has an obvious crush on Batman since both of them are friends since childhood. She told Batman the world needs him. Pretty obvious she has romantic feelings for the Bats.

There was no crush on Robin in the comics. The Young Justice cartoon was really inaccurate for ALL of the characters. Zatanna is about a year older than Bruce Wayne in the comics, so a crush on Robin would've been really inappropriate for a very long time due to age and these days she tends to go for partners who understand magic, which makes Dick Grayson just totally not right for her.

David Taylor Indeed. Paul Dini writes an interesting Zatanna/Batman. The Batman TAS, his detective comics run prove that fact. Their relationship is based on mutual respect, friendship not betrayal or any sad things like that. constantine is just a piece of shit who make Zatanna looks bad every time. Not only that but constantine makes an habit of disrespecting her at every opportunity available. I mean that constantine guy killed Zee's father, stole her some of her powers and betrayed her countless times. When constantine is around, Zee is an incompetent fool to make constantine looks good. Only blind fanboys would find a Zee/constantine relationship interesting when in fact its not fact. Its all about constatine taking the all credit while leaving Zee with nothing. When you think about it, that Zee/constantine thing its not even a relationship since a relationship implies that both patners are equal, respect each other, complete each other, etc. Its more an ego thing to make constantine relevant when in fact he has proven countless times how irrelevant he is. But, if you read Justice League Dark 30, you will find out that Zee completely lost patience with constantine. She even called him "worthless" lol. constantine is not the team leader anymore since Zee assumes that role now. In fact, since he betrayed the whole team constantine has been kicked out of the JLD. With constantine out of the picture, she will become awesome again. Considering their history together as childhood friends, I agree with the fact that Zatanna and Bruce being a couple makes a lot of sense. At least he respects her as a magician and a person something constantine would never do. constantine can always go waste his time in some random bars so that some randoms thugs can beat him up pretty good lol.
