I've been listening to John Prine for over 50 years. I bought his first album in 1971. I introduced my family and many friends to his songs and music. His passing took a part of my being with him because there isn't anyone, in my humble opinion, that will ever come close to portraying life into lyrics as John could do so eloquently. I can only hope that when I leave this world I end up where you are still playing and singing. To the "people" who gave the thumbs-down, well....Some humans 'aint human.

You just can't allow yourself to be distracted or derailed in life by those who merely "Dislike" you. The quintessential example of that is, when before this earth was created God presented a plan for us all to come to an 'earth' . Can you imagine a third of the host of heaven opposing (Disliking) God's plan and rebelling against Him? THAT is some SERIOUS 'Disliking' on the part of some ne'er-to-be 'humans'. Humans just can't fix some things; so, just 'cut it loose' and move the h**l on.

Years ago...rainy Vancouver night - little dump called The Egress. Mimi Farina was in town and in a shitty mood along with suffering a bad cold. She tried for a bit but crumbled and we got ready to finish our drinks and leave. Over town, the big deal was John Prine with Steve Goodman. Can you imagine that combination? After about 15 minutes offstage, Mimi returns and tells us these two guys were in town and after their gig they came to see her perform. Both being gentlemen and performers to the core, they offered to help Mimi out with those of us still there to hear music. They stepped up, got the guitars out and took over the mike. What a night. And what a perfect example of John Prine the guy and the musician. Mimi's been gone 20 years and now John and Steve are gone, too. But the memory is there, still sweet and fresh. Bless 'em all.

When I was a senior in high school, in 1974, a few of us went over to one of our English teacher's houses--one of those cool teachers who is not afraid of getting to know students well in a healthy and balanced way. Smart guy; loved books and poetry. I was talking up Dylan and Arlo Guthrie. He rose from his rocking chair and said..."you've got to listen to this: a singer songwriter by the name of John Prine and this album, Diamonds in the Rough.--one of those life-changing moments. I still get into all kinds of music--folk, progressive, jazz. Good music is good music. I love Van Morrison. Endless discoveries in there. Same for Dylan. Same for the music of JOhn PRine. Probably a reason I became an English teacher myself and a storyteller / composer. Praying for John to come through and help keep our hearts beating with the humanity of his music. One of the greats.

Many of the greatest artists all focus on a special area they are so experienced at. We have Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, and thank God -- we have a John Prine. His little short story songs are all so special and easily relatable. None of the other greats really write like this. They may dabble, but a Prine song is a Prine song. I was a photographer at the Old Warfield in San Francisco (Owned by Bill Graham back when-early eighties) John Prine played one night. We sat in the green room and talked for a while. Genuinely one of the nicest people anyone could ever have the pleasure to meet. Great guy. Love his music.

I was in the USAF in 1972 in Hampton Virginia and found my way to Norfolk for a John Prine concert. I was in line to buy a ticket when I fell walked up to me and asked if I wanted to buy his extra ticket. Well, I did and it was fourth row center. It was John playing for two hours solid with just him, his guitar and capo and a pack of unfiltered camels on a barstool next to him. I’ll never forget it. It left a mark.

Was at John's concert 2 years ago, even at his age and lesser vocals his performance was unbelievable. Fully engaged his audience with awesome charisma and storytelling, his songs and music was just an added bonus. After 2 hours straight jamming without a break, at the end of concert he dismisses his crew and does a guitar solo. Had a full concert hall on our feet cheering. Will never forget it! Thank You John, You were one in a million!!!

I play guitar and sing (both poorly). My wife refuses to let me play this song when she's around. So I play it when I'm on the side of town... along with many other Prine songs. GREAT songwriter.

I've listened to Mr. Prine for fifty years, I knew when he passed away, their would be a huge Entertainer missing. Hope he has shook God's hand. And now in Western Kentucky where Paradise flows. Someday maybe I'll hear that new Rock and Roll band. Rest and go easy my friend.

Pretty much my life from 1973, John Prine was the voice inside my head. I was a first year MFA grad student at LSU in 1974, but I did not have any assistantship so I had a job working the night shift at the Union. John Prine played in the auditorium at the Union where I worked one of the night’s I was working there and I could hear him from time to time as I did my job, but it was small just bit and pieces. I wanted so badly to hear that man whose work spoke to me so much, but as it turned out, about all I heard was cheering and applause. He and his work have meant so much to me till this very day . I had a good life from that point on with a few John Prine moments tossed in there and I am still lucky to have stayed true to my younger MFA aspirations and I still practice my craft as a visual artist every day. I love John Prine and miss him so much.

From the guest book on John's website years ago....."the last quarter of the twentieth century wouldn't have been worth living without John Prine". To which I would add.......the first seventeen years of this century certainly would not have been either without John.

Having listened to John Prine for more than 40 years, cleverness always was, in my very humble opinion, what stood out the brightest among those many factors that accumulated into the sum total of his songwriting brilliance. That was God's gift to John, and John's gift to the world.

I've listened for that long as well. Loved his way. His dry wit was always there, but it was heart that beat behind that that I liked the best. He touched me where I live.

It reminds me of when I saw Gordon Lightfoot perform once. In the verse of one song, he stepped back strumming and pacing back and forth, then completed the song. After it was over, he apologized, and said that he forgot the lyrics, even though he wrote the song.

I had heard of John Prine for years but didn’t bother to listen to his music. Wow, my loss! I love his music and now have another favorite storyteller. A lot of artists are never truly recognized by the world until we lose them. I hope and pray John is one of those individuals. What a gift from Heaven. Hope he’s having a great time jamming with Steve Goodman and other old buddies.
