Here's a story for you. My late brother in law spent two years with John Prime in the Army back in the sixties. They shared a bunk bed in Germany for two years. Anyway fast-forward thirty some years later John Prime is doing a concert at Fairmont WV and my brother in law went to see him perform. Denny, my brother in law, tried to get back stage to see him. He told security that they lived together for two years in Germany and were like brothers at one time! Security, yeah right! They never let him in to see John, what a shame. I am sure that would of been one hell of a reunion.

I think a lot of us would have been happy to burn one with John Prine. I know I would, even during the time when I hadn't smoked for 20 some years. John Prine was one of the important musicians of my youth. Back in college, my friends and I would get together, smoke a few, and sometimes listen to his music, sometimes play it as part of an afternoon or evening playing music. "Illegal Smile", "Sam Stone", and "Your flag decal won't get you into Heaven any more," were particular favorites, along with Harry Chapin, John Bassett, and a few others- we used to spend hours playing those songs. What's kinda funny, is looking back, we were also looking into the future, because each of those songs remains relevant today. I lost my brother to the opioid epidemic a few years ago, an illegal smile helps make my retirement pretty mellow, and watching people run around with their flag decals and MAGA hats reminds me of the back of the dirty book store. I'm sorry you're gone John. I'd have loved to burn one with you, but I thank you for all the memories you helped me make. But your songs carry on. I'll be listening to one of my college friends playing a tribute to your music next Saturday, and hoping you know how much we enjoyed your work, wherever you are.

Grew up listening to John Prine courtesy of my dad who sadly passed away last summer. About the same time I found and fell in love with Kacey. Thought it couldn't like her more....then found this. Cant wait to see her in Merritt B.C. in August! !
