aired November 12, 2005
LYRICS
I'm goin' down to the Greyhound station
Gonna buy a ticket to ride
I'm gonna find that lady with two or three kids
And sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around
About two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Sing my song for the people I meet
And get along with it all
Where the people say "y'all"
Sing a song with a friend
Change the shape that I'm in
And start playin' again
I'd like to stay
But I might have to go to start over again
I might go back down to Texas
Or go to somewhere that I've never been
And get up in the mornin' and go out at night
And I won't have to go home
Get used to bein' alone
Change the words to this song
And start singin' again
I'm tired of runnin' 'round lookin' for answers
To questions that I already know
I could build me a castle with memories
Just to have somewhere to go
Count the days and the nights that it takes
To get back in the saddle again
Feed the pigeons some clay
Turn the night into day
And start talkin' again, when I know what to say
I'm goin' down to the Greyhound station
Gonna buy a ticket to ride
I'm gonna find that lady with two or three kids
And sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around
About two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Play my song for the people I meet
And get along with it all
Where the people say "y'all"
Feed the pigeons some clay
Turn the night into day
And start talkin' again, when I know what to say
written by Blaze Foley

When I think about simpler times, and start to miss my dear brother who passed over a decade ago, I find myself listening to John Prine. His music is tattooed on my soul and in my heart. I discovered him in 1973 while washing my brother's car and I popped in one of his cassette tapes. I am an old woman these days... and yes, I sure do choke up.

I was heartbroken before he ever sang a word. I was one of those with a “hole in his arm where all the money goes”. I carried Prine around in a stolen walkman player with a beat up cassette over-due from a library loaned in another state. He spoke pictures of life folks lived like he knew us personally. Like he lived it himself and had the words that connected with the feelings. But i won’t miss him, too much, I’ve got the legacy he’s left us. I wish i could tell him “thanks”.

My father would play John Prine albums back in the early 70’s which doesn’t sound unusual, but you see I’m from Scotland and as far I was concerned my dad was the coolest cat on the planet, as I thought we were the only people listening to this genius in Scotland back then, I was wrong of course, rest easy John, god speed.

I still think just by this description that for the time and place your dad may have been in the running for the coolest man on the planet. Scottish people get bumped up a bunch just because they're Scottish and have the very best slang and and they have the best back and forth shit talking I've ever witnessed. I don't think a Scottish ego can grow too far out of proportion because the rest of the country will certainly k rock them down a peg or two. Cheers.

What an honor it would have been to have known John Prine and been his friend . I’m 83 years old and become a fan of JP only within the last few years ( what in heck took me so damned long ? ) . Every song he sings touches me in a way that no other singer does , because in every song you can feel John’s presence and soul . And makes me feel like my best friend is singing . . . . to me . . . and other friends of his . RIP JP , you’re loved.

Beautifully said! Cheers to you my fellow Prine super fan. I fell in love with him without meeting him. I know of not one musician for which I can say the same. I admire Bill Murray for his understandable deep devotion to Mr. John Prine. Rest in peace - the most amazing man next to my Father and husband (sorta). John Prine is an icon I love unconditionally. My husband is a John i love. If he could do some of what Prine can do, my worship just might reach my level of obsession with Prine. Good thing is he adores him as much as me.

The finest performance of Clay Pigeons, I think (and I've done some looking around). Prine's vocal here is almost beyond perfectly right for this brokedown road song, and the only ornamentation that could really work would be a high and lonesome harmonica, which is what we get - enjoy!!

@James Wright Remember at the end of "Field of Dreams," Ray (played by Kevin Costner) is asked by his father, "Is this heaven?" And Ray answers, "It's Iowa." "Iowa," his dad answers, "I could have sworn this is heaven." Then Ray asks, "Is there a heaven?" His father then says, "Oh yeah...It's the place where dreams come true." Those sentiments express it all for me. We may not have complete certainty about what happens after death, but we do know there are moments in our lives, with our family or friends, even with a stranger, where our connections have the kind of peace or joy we envision heaven to be or like. I think we need to treasure those moments and truly appreciate life's precious moments. It's often hard to fully recognize and acknowledge those glorious experiences, as they occur, but they are there, for each of us. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all see that in each other...see that we're all the same...perhaps even make this world more like heaven? It seems like that's what John Prine sang about; our common humanity...
