Your Windows Server video series is amazingly helpful for us newbies. On a small network with a Windows Server 2019 and a Linksys router should DHCP be setup on the server or should the Linksys router handle the IP assignments?
@ittaster
@ittaster 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, good question. My approach would be if a small network is large enough to need a DHCP server to issue IP addresses to client devices and there is a Windows Server, I would use DHCP on the Windows Server. Also it's important that Windows workstations point to the Windows Server DNS (if Active Directory is in use) DHCP options make this nice and easy. Many thanks for your kind comments and feedback about my videos! Best wishes Jon

Hi Connor, one approach you might want to consider is to configure the server IP to fit in with the IP address scheme used by your wifi router. Most home wifi routers are in the 192.168.x.x range. You could then turn off DHCP on the wifi router and have the Windows Server provide DHCP & DNS. DHCP would need to issue the same IP range as the router did and also issue the router IP (default gateway) to client workstations, and the server IP as DNS. The server IP would also need the router set as the default gateway. I agree, I think it would make a useful video. Thanks for your comments, kind feedback and many thanks for supporting the channel! Best wishes Jon

If you're setting up a learning lab to experiment / test Windows Server, a suggestion would be to consider adding the 'Wireless LAN Service' in add roles and features, from server manager. Manage > Add Roles Features > Features>Wireless LAN Service.

Sir, how are you setting up your virtual environment to isolate it from your physical network/router? I am using Hyper-V, I created a Windows Server 2019 and a Windows 10 machine in this virtual environment. I mostly followed your tutorials to setup the Server, AD, DNS and DHCP. My Windows 10 continues to get its IP from my physical router. virtual switch is set to External. If I use the internal switch then I have no internet connection and I am getting 169.254.x.x. APIPA address. My physical router: 192.168.1.0/24 Gateway: 192.168.1.254 Shouldn't my DHCP use a different subnet? I think a short tutorial about this subject would be appreciated by many. I have seen this questions unanswered in many different platforms. Thanks for your time!

Hi, when working with Windows Server in the test lab and DHCP server I usually just allow connectivity between the VMs. If the DHCP role is installed on a Windows Server VM and you have a client Windows 10 VM. You could consider setting the 'private' network connection in virtual switch manager to isolate the test lab VMs from the external network and your router.

I saw your list of videos and how to progressively go through them. Have made some progress. But now I have come to Installing & configuring DHCP - Windows Server 2019. My problem is when you go to list the IP No.s and Exclusions. I have 6 computers where the I.P.s go from 10.0.0.3X to 10.0.0.8X to 10.0.0.13X to 10.0.0.21X 10.0.0.24X to 192.168.2.X. How would I list all these I.P.s with or without Exclusions or is there another way to list the I.P.s? I have tried changing the I.P.s where they are near range to each other but a short time later, they revert back.
@ittaster
@ittaster 5 ай бұрын
Hi, exclusions are typically used for devices that are assigned a static/fixed IP address, set on the device manually (a network printer for example). The DHCP scope is used to specify the range of addresses to be assigned to DHCP client devices (for example: start address: 10.0.0.10) end address 10.0.0.100). 192.168.2.x is a different subnet. I have a short series of videos that cover IPv4 addresses and how they work that you may find helpful too.

@ittaster Thank you for your video. It didn't work on me. I followed the same step, ipconfig /all on the client computer it showed the Default Gateway, DNS server, and DHCP Server the same IPv4. The IPv4 Address on client computers familiar with before used DHCP. Connection-specific DNS Suffix doesn’t show the domain name (empty). I redo many times but still the same issue. Does anyone have an issue like me?

if I have two network adapters installed on windows server 2019 witch adapter will use dhcp server one of them or both
@ittaster
@ittaster 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, typically we tend to assign servers with a static IP. If you have two NICs adapters, you may want to consider 'teaming' them. This gives load balancing and improves bandwidth. But to answer your question if you have two NICs (non teamed) they will both obtain an IP address from DHCP, which gets complicated. Hope this helps.

Hi, you might want to consider temporarily disabling DHCP on the router in your lab while testing, to avoid both Windows server and the router issuing IP addresses.

Hi ittaster, isit possible to install and run DHCP using a host only internal switch, rather than use an external switch? As I have a yellow exclamation mark symbol on my network adapter in the system tray, this is after I have set up the scope, and when changing the network adapter settings to obtain a IP address automatically from DHCP for a Windows 10 VM, the Windows 10 VM does not obtain a IP address. If both server and Win 10 VM is setup to use a hardcoded IP addresses they can connect and ping each other which is not what I want, please help.
@ittaster
@ittaster 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dean, yes you are able to do that. If you are able to ping the devices when you have configured a static IP, it sounds like the issue could be with the Windows Server DHCP service. Double check the DHCP server is authorised and the DHCP scope is activated. It often requires a reboot after config. Windows clients host adaptors will display an exclamation if no direct Internet is available also, which is ok if you are using an internal switch or proxy server. I hope this if of help Jon

I'm confused as to why the IP range is only 200-250 and the excluded is only 200-209 with a normal /24 subnet. Why wouldn't you simply exclude like 192.168.1.1-101 and leave the range from 102-254 with the gateway within the excluded range
@ittaster
@ittaster 11 ай бұрын
Hi, the ranges used in the video are for demo purposes. To work with a small range of addresses and to keep them at the upper end of the range to help avoid conflicts if a learner's lab isn't properly isolated from a home network etc. I tend to prefer to keep key devices like servers, routers and managed switches outside the scope altogether. For example: Network Address: 192.168.1.0/24 Servers/Routers/Switches (static) : 192.168.1.1 - 10 DHCP scope: 192.168.1.11 - 254 Exclusions can then be added for less critical devices Hope this helps and apologies for the confusion! Jon

@ittaster
@ittaster 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, it would depend on the size of the network (number of clients). A server with ADDS role installed would typically have a static IP. A Microsoft DHCP server is likely to give more options for configuration (for example assigning devices the domain name etc.)
