I "see" the tree the same way you do. But this one of the things I love about bonsai, everyone can see a tree differently and the tree can still turn out awesome!

As a result of the care and experience of your hands, your vegetables are full. We get a lot of gardening experience, and gardening inspiration from your videos. Thanks for sharing. I will come again when I get notification. You also come to my little garden.

The plant will grow as big as roots and the containers they live in. When you have them in little pots you need to fertilize a lot. My 2 cents ❤️

One potential reason for the slow growth would be that it doesn't get enough direct sun. Do you keep it in ashaded area? Another reason could be the lack of nutrients. Was it fertilised regularly? Over or under watering may also be a reason for slow growth . That's about all I could think off.
@PoorMansBonsai

Thanks for the comment! Yes I think this one has probably experienced a bit of all 3. I'm not sure if I ever fertilized it. I really didn't pay much attention to this plant for years. We had it on a shelf with other succulents, and I think it didn't get as much sun as other plants sometimes. I'm curious if now that I'm focusing on it more, it'll grow faster...we'll see! I appreciate the comment!

Hmmm portulacaria afra does not like having wet feet. And that tiny pot will hold water for about 1/3 it's height. I would have a) used non-organic soil especially containing akadama and b) I would have mounted the soil so that it is lifted out of the pot to give it a space without a ton of water. It would also allow more display of any nibari it had.

My grandfather has a 10 year old schefflera bonsai and it’s TINY. It sits on a lava rock in a dish, from my understanding the plant can only grow as tall as far as the roots can grow radially.

is there ways to speed up the growth of elephant bushes? (particularly cuttings)
@PoorMansBonsai
@PoorMansBonsai 3 жыл бұрын
To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure. I just stick them in pots and let them grow haha. But i definitely think once the roots set it and they get plenty of sunlight, water, and fertilizer, they take off quickly!

I have dozens of elephant bush plants and cuttings. In my experience they see a real growth spurt when planted in soil rather than in pots. I do fertilise mine, but I see the best growth in the ground - even the leaves takes on a deeper green colour compared to when planted in pots.

It’s because it get watered in a small pot and you keep it that’ll,e that for a long line. Every soil when planted will keep them small

That's 5 years of growth? Where do you live, in the North Pole?
@PSPMHaestros
@PSPMHaestros 3 жыл бұрын
Joking aside, that's really strange. Do you fertilize it regularly during the growing season? Does it get at least a few hours of sun a day? It looks well watered, and has nice roots, so that's not the problem. It could be something genetic, but that's very unprovable, specially if it's a cutting from other normal-growing plant

@@jazzycat2990 They are, in fact, very quick growing. Here in the south of Spain, one of my portulacaria afra can easily grow that much in under a month, instead of 5 years, with adecuate watering and fertilizer

For a plant to come out of the pot after 5 years looking like that it has not been growing roots at all. Either the soil was too wet or you never fertilized it. That should have been pressing under the lip of the pot and you should have had to cut it out. So you need to look at your care of it and what you can do to give it vigorous growht.

The plant needed to be repotted but that is not a pot. You think that branches are “unnecessary?” Well, you now have a trunk. You slaughtered the thing. You have nothing but a trunk and some leaves on a already stunted bush. That larger branch that you cut off would have at least made it resemble a tree.
