When should you start pruning these? I received a clipping as a gift and it's getting tall after about a year but not branching and still a green trunk

Pruning is typically what prompts the elephant bush to branch, so you should prune it back as much as you like and expect it to branch into at least two places there. Elephant bush likes to be trimmed.

What about repotting? That first one has too many rocks needs more soil and nutrients.

Last year I got a pittosporum from a nursery that went out of business and left some junky plants behind. It was in a five gallon container. I trimmed it back so that just the trunk and branches at the top. It has a neat looking trunk. I stuck it in a bonsai pot at a rakish 45 degree angle. I also partially defoliated it leaving only small leaves. Should be an interesting project.

I think too many people cut too much off of these plants. You’re cutting off like 9 to 15 months worth of growth when you can wire most of it imo. I mean the first plant in your montage was butchered.

I have a Bonsai baby tree not Succulent though. I just repotted today with fresh soil and fish fertilizer AFTER 3-4 years lol. I just water it and pruned when it needed that was it. I'm suprise when I pulled it out of the pot the roots did not rot it sat in water for 2-3 years. The leaves always dark green. I just start get into succulents. I usually get thr rare ones that most people don't have. Yours are beautiful! I've NEVER seen them before I want them. Love it!

I "see" the tree the same way you do. But this one of the things I love about bonsai, everyone can see a tree differently and the tree can still turn out awesome!
