TumbleGamer STV is Scottish Television in most of Scotland, and UTV is Ulster Television in Northern Ireland. Both are part of the ITV network.

The breakdown was caused by a thunderstorm passing over the Hammersmith Apollo in London Most live broadcasts from big venues use a fibre link which is unaffected by the weather but the Hammersmith Apollo does not have a fibre link installed so they used outside broadcasts trucks which use satellites to relay the broadcast to BT Tower which then relays the broadcasts to the ITV downlink stations. If you have SKY installed and a storm passes over head the same thing will happen as happened in this case.

I was watching BGT that evening here in Swansea when this happened. At first, I thought it was only our region (ITV Cymru Wales) that had been affected because I know that in the past, only particular regions of ITV had experienced carriage problems. For example, I remember Dermot O'Leary made on air apology during a results show of The X Factor a few years ago because ITV Border in Northern England and Southern Scotland had gone down as the results were being announced. Then when the continuity announcer came on, and I heard that it was the same one who does the generic ITV continuity, I realised that it must be nationwide and not just Wales.

This appears differently on mine. Right at the start after first glitch there are test cards and a green screen. Is that a regional difference? Will upload my view once I get my DVD recorder working.

I watched in the UTV region when it happened live and it aired just like this excluding the music & announcements. This video is ITV +1 so you could have seen something different depending on your region

madmonkey4eva - I live in Swansea, so it was on ITV Cymru Wales for me as well. I think we saw it differently because ITV is, of course, broken down into regions for regional news, regional adverts, etc. In order to achieve this, each region has a studio located somewhere within it (in our case, the ITV Cymru Wales studios are at Culverhouse Cross in Cardiff). The main ITV playout centre is somewhere in West London. The studios of each ITV region act as receivers for the channel's main feed because that's basically what they are. We saw 'Loss of signal' on our screens because the ITV feed is picked up at Culverhouse Cross and then relayed within the ITV Cymru Wales region - as it is in the other ITV regions around the UK. So basically, we see ITV as a secondary feed rather than a primary one, and if the primary feeds that get relayed to the regions ever go down as they did that evening, the signal at the secondary source (again, Culverhouse Cross for us) will disappear. But when "We're sorry for the disruption" and all that came up on the screen, obviously some kind of broadcast signal had been restored across ITV in order for that, its Emergancy Broadcast System or something, to kick in. The uploader must have recorded this from ITV London, and ITV London might have had it differently because it could have been the source of the primary broadcast feed.

We're a small country so something like a simple switching error (like what happens at BT Tower) effects everyone. While something like that happening in America may only effect a few stations on a network like NBC as the rest of the stations may be getting it from a different source.
